Reduce emissions and improve efficiencyThe limits of the worlds natural resources dominate our times, and themarine industry is taking on the same challenges as everybody elseregarding energy usage. VACON NXP Grid Converter technology helps shipowners and port authorities reduce fuel intake and improve efficiency. Thiswill please investors and environmental legislators alike – after all, lowerenergy consumption equals lower costs.Ships require power when at sea andwhen docked in the harbour. Poweris not only required to propel shipsaround the world, it also provideselectricity to operate equipment onboard at all times.and local residents appreciate theuse of grid converters, since they canpractically eradicate CO2 and NOxemissions while the vessel is docked.Eco-friendly sea travelTake a cruise ship for example.Passengers pay a great deal of moneyand expect to be treated accordingly.Karaoke, champagne bars andswimming pools all need a lot ofelectricity to power them, as do morefundamental components, such aspropulsion machinery and winches. This also applies when a ship’s dockedin a city harbour, as on-board facilitiesstill need to operate. Port authoritiesProviding clean energy and savingmoney for our customers is what drivesus, and we develop environmentallysound solutions. VACON NXP GridConverter technology represents thenext step, ensuring that ship and portowners can meet new stipulationswhile productivity increases andbusiness prospers.Using VACON NXP Grid Converter ina shore supply solution enables shipsto source energy from local gridson the shore, meaning that mainship generators can be switched offcompletely. Applying VACON NXPGrid Converter to a shaft generatorsolution allows for optimum controlof propulsion machinery at variousspeeds, thus saving plenty of energy. You can also rest assured that yourproducts will be fully optimized foryour particular solution with the help ofVACON Service. How governmentsare focusing on cuttingemissionsThe International MaritimeOrganization (IMO) has madethe Energy Efficiency DesignIndex (EEDI), which sets out toensure new ships improve carbonefficiency by 20% in 2020 and30% in 2030.The IMO has also created the ShipEnergy Efficiency ManagementPlan (SEEMP), which means allships must seek to establisha means of improving energyefficiency.Danfoss Drives · DKDD.PB.914.A1.023

Shore supply solutionwith VACON NXP Grid ConverterShips travel from port to port, sometimes stopping in a new countryeach day. Ports don’t all use the same electrical frequencies, and shipshave historically used a fuel-driven onboard generator to provideelectrical power while docked. This is costly though, and city councilsand local residents are reluctant to tolerate the noise and poor air qualitythat is often associated with a busy city harbour. Many port authorities now prohibit,or at least strictly limit, the use ofdiesel generators while ships aredocked. VACON NXP Grid Convertertechnology ensures that the ship’sfrequency matches that of the localgrid. This allows the ship’s entireelectrical network to be powered via aset of cables linking the vessel to theshore. The main engine can be shut down, which prevents unnecessary carbonemissions and noise pollution, andallows maintenance work to take placewhen necessary. All in all, it’s a farcleaner, more economical solution thanbefore and is set to become a standardrequirement in the future.a VACON NXP Grid Converter, a filterand a connection interface. Shore sideequipment is selected depending onthe limit to total harmonic distortion(THDi) levels, which can be as low as 5% when an active front-end unit isinstalled. How it worksThe shore side equipment typicallyincludes an isolation transformer andeither a 6/12 pulse or low harmonicActive Front End filter. Case studiesClean power for the largest port in the worldThe port of ShanghaiLocation: Shanghai, ChinaThe Port of Shanghai is the busiest inthe world in terms of cargo throughput, with nearly 170 large ships dockingeach day. Annual trade accounts foraround ¼ of China’s total foreign trade. This activity inevitably puts a strain onthe local environment, which is why theport uses a movable 2000 kVA shoresupply system to supply electricityfrom the national grid to ships that aredocked.VACON NXP Grid Convertertechnology plays a key role in thisdesign, ensuring 10 kV of shore powercan be converted into 440 V/60 Hzor 380 V/50 Hz of high-quality cleanpower. The shore supply system hasshown unprecedented technicalbenefits – if, and when, all large shipsin the Port of Shanghai implementit, it will save 33,800 tons of harmfulsubstances a year. Furthermore, astaggering 113,150 tons of CO2 is saved,as is 366,000 tons of standard coal.Land-based power supplyfor ships is on the increaseSTX EuropeLocation: Turku, FinlandSTX Europe is a world leader inshipbuilding, with 14,000 employeesand 6 shipyards in Finland, Franceand Norway. In 2010, a EU directivewas passed making it compulsoryto use extremely low sulphur fuel inport areas. It became apparent thatelectricity should be sourced from localgrids in order to save costs, emissionsand noise.electricity via its own 1.5 MW dieselaggregate. When this power provedinsufficient, the shipyard looked tosource electricity from the national grid. The grid converter solution producedwas developed with VEO and featuredtwo 4000 VACON NXP LiquidCooled drives controlled by VACON DriveSynch technology. The shoresupply system came into operation inlate 2008, and has resulted in majorreductions in emissions and noise.STX’s Turku shipyard builds large cruiseliners, historically supplying them with“The delivery took place duringthe economic boom and wehad a very tight deadline, butthe system was up and runningon schedule. The land-basedpower supply system has metexpectations. There have beensome small problems insynchronizing the nationalgrid network and the on-boardnetwork, but the team came upwith a solution for this as well.”Timo LahdenrantaElectrical Site Foremanat STX Europe Turku5

Shaft generator solutionwith VACON NXP Grid ConverterThe cruise liners and cargo ships of today tend to resemble mobile citieswith vast infrastructures. They require a huge amount of electricity tomaintain both their internal setup and the mechanical power that’sneeded to travel around the world.Due to constant voltage and frequencyrequirements of the ship’s electricalnetwork, the main engine operates at afixed speed. For a number of years now, shaft generators have been used tosupplement this with variable amountsof electrical power. With VACON NXPGrid Converter technology, the enginespeed can be optimized while keeping100% pitch for the propeller. Thisincreases efficiency and, by deliveringconstant voltage and frequency, allowsthe electrical network to help theauxiliary engines. It also makes it far easier to controlthe speed of the ship. This is especiallyuseful for ships that require regularchanges in speed mid-voyage due todynamic traffic conditions. If the mainengine encounters problems at sea, analternative source of power means thatships can still make it to safety. How it worksSince the frequency produced bythe alternator is proportional to thespeed of the engine, the engine mustoperate at a constant speed. Theapplication consists of equipment onboth the generator side and the shipgrid side. The machine – which can beinduction, permanent magnet (PM) orsynchronous – is controlled either bya low-voltage inverter or Active FrontEnd.The shaft generator is coupled to themain engine and power is taken out tothe ship’s electrial network to supportthe auxilliary generators (Power Takeoff /PTO). It’s also possible to boostpropulsion by transferring power to theshaft generator (Power Take In /PTI).Key benefits6Environmentally friendly Reduced fuel consumption Reduced CO2 and NOx emissionsIncreased performanceand efficiency Power Take Off (PTO) generates power to ship’s electrical network Power Take In (PTI) boosts ship’s speed Ship can be taken safely to harbour in case of main engine failureFlexible solution Compatible with permanent magnet, induction or synchronous machines Available for both new-build and retrofit installationsDanfoss Drives · DKDD.PB.914.A1.02

Case studiesRoFlex vessel with energy efficient shaftgenerator configurationWE Tech / M/V Bore SeaLocation: Helsinki, FinlandM/V Bore Sea was one of two RoFlexvessels ordered by Rorel Ltd totransport Airbus components. After theenforcement of the SEEMP in January2013, WE Tech Solutions Oy developeda solution which optimized mainpropulsion machinery and improvedenergy efficiency. They chose a solution based onVACON NXP Grid Convertertechnology. This is a system combiningthe shaft generator and the ship’selectrical network which allows forlarge variation to the main engine’sspeed. This solution still delivers powerwith constant voltage and frequency, making it possible to optimize mainengine efficiency and saving fuel.Reducing carbon footprint on river cruisesViking RiverLocation: GermanyRiver cruising is the hip youngerbrother of ocean cruises and hasundergone something of a boom inthe past decade. One challenge facingmanufacturers is the limit on spacefor river-faring vessels, particularlywhen it comes to fitting diesel-electricpropulsion equipment. Fortunately,VACON NXP Grid Convertertechnology helps provide a solutionvia inverter-driven asynchronousgenerators.Viking River Cruises are the world’slargest river cruise company. Their boatMV Viking Legend made its maidenvoyage in 2009, and was the world’sfirst river cruise vessel to use a shaftgenerator network between mainpropulsion and the network. The system connected VACON NXPGrid Converter technology with 3 dieselgenerators, and was able to use a farsmaller diesel engine than usual. Thissignificantly reduced fuel consumptionand emissions, noise and vibrations. Italso meant the vessel was much easierto manoeuvre, allowing passengers toget up close to the historic cities andvillages that border the Rhine and theDanube.“We’re very pleased with theimproved energy efficiencyachieved through varioustechnical solutions used onM/V Bore Sea. Data analysesverify the WE Tech Solutions’shaft generator with VACON AC drives brings savings ofapproximately 10% in fuelcosts. Given that fuel costs areabout 500 per tonne, theannual cost savings aresignificant, and on top of thatCO2 emissions are also cut byapproximately 2000 tonnes.”Jörgen MansnerusVP Marine Management, Bore Ltd.“At any given moment theship’s energy needs areautomatically calculated andthe engines produce andsupply only as much energy asneeded. This allows the ship touse 20 % less energy than acomparable ship.”Thomas BoglerViking River CruisesVice President of NauticalOperations7
