The cleaning and preparation ofthe substrate to which the MasterSeal Roofsystem is applied must leave a sound base forthe application.MasterSeal Roof systems can be applied to avariety of substrates from new reinforcedconcrete to plywood, PVC, colourbond steel,copper, other metals, stone, tiles (glazed andterracotta), brick, polystyrene and concrete thathas had bitumen and other materials applied.The MasterSeal primer range includes primersfor new concrete, tiles, metal, old bitumenmembranes or bitumen contaminated concrete.These have been formulated on both epoxy andpolyurethane bases to ensure that theMasterSeal Roof systems can fully bond to thechosen substrate.Membrane applicationThe MasterSeal Roof systems spray and handapplied elastomeric waterproofing membranesare a real alternative to conventionalwaterproofing methods provided by bituminoussheet membranes and polymer sheetmembranes.These liquid applied non-solvent membranesconform to all irregular surfaces without laps,welds, or seams, forming a seamlessmembrane with no weak points for wateringress.The spray technology of MasterSeal Roofsystems has evolved and now both thetraditional and 1:1 mix ratio materials areavailable. Allowing faster installation oncomplex substrates than hand applied andelimination of changing materials when movingfrom horizontal to vertical application makesthis the choice for larger areas and complexsubstrates. The spray applied membranes set injust 30 seconds to form a solid, impervious,monolithic elastomeric membrane and isunaffected by rain after only one minute. Aswith the hand applied system, it is seamlessand has the unique benefit of conforming to allirregular surfaces removing the need for lapsand pre-formed sections needed with sheetmembranes. This makes detailing work usingMasterSeal Roof membranes up to 20 timesfaster than traditional sheet methods.InsulationMany refurbishments and new builds nowincorporate insulation in the roof build up.MasterSeal Roof systems can accommodateinsulation applied directly to the roof andsubsequently waterproofed or insulation placedover the waterproofing. The MasterSeal Roofmembranes and primers are compatible withpolyurethane foam insulation and the variousgrades of expanded polystyrene (EPS). Specificbuild ups can be created with the designer toachieve the insulation and waterproofingoutcome desired.Top coatingThe final stage of the MasterSeal Roof systemsis the protection of the membrane fromdegradation by UV and weathering which wouldover time reduce the ability of the membrane tocope with the thermal movements of the roof.The top coats job is to protect the membraneand as such it needs to be maintained to ensurethat the membrane can work for many years.The life of the top coat is determined by theenvironmental conditions and the harsher theyare, the more often the top coat needs to bemaintained. The selection of the top coat isrelated to the use of the roof (foot traffic thusrequiring non-skid), the aesthetics required(colour, texture) and additional attributes likesolar reflectivity. The MasterSeal Roof systemsincorporates a range of top coats to providethese attributes. No top coat is generallyrequired if the membrane is to be covered by aroof garden or pavers but the membrane shouldnot be left exposed to the elements forextended periods without a protective top coat.

The choice will depend on size, aggressiveness of the climate and the criticality of the waterproofinginstallation. As the membrane is protected and does not rot ordegrade, it will last the 'design life of the roof' as assessed by the British Board of Agreement (BBA).The membrane is fully bonded to the concrete deck ensuring water cannot track under its surface and is lap free. Thesystem requires no falls as the drainage board provides the drainage of water and its straight forward build up reducesinstallation time.
