THE IMMANUEL DOVEDiscovering and displaying Christ in here and out there.Immanuel Presbyterian Church (USA) Tucson, AZVolume 30 Issue 4“Pain passes, but beauty remains.”There’s a wonderful three-minute long video on youtube of the artist Renoir in his older years painting one ofhis works of art. Although he is advanced in years, you see the energy of a child unleashed in him. Towardsthe later years of Renoir’s life, his body was wracked by rheumatoid arthritis. By 1915 he couldn’t walk andwas essentially paralyzed. His hands were gnarled and deformed. How could Renoir possibly still paint? Yethe kept painting. His son helped moved the canvas so his father could reach different places to paint. Apaintbrush was pressed through his twisted fingers. And then Renoir would light up. There would be a gleamin his eye and he could escape his pain and enter into his beautiful world of art and creativity. Matisse wasanother painter, thirty years younger than Renoir. Renoir mentored Matisse. Matisse couldn’t stop visiting histeacher. He said that he never saw a man so happy as when Renoir was painting. One time Matisse askedRenoir how he kept painting through all of his physical disabilities. He responded, “Pain passes Matisse, butbeauty remains.”This is our great hope of the gospel—the pain of Good Friday passes, and the beauty of Easter remains. Forthree days Jesus was dead, but for eternity Jesus lives, and we live, because of the resurrection. “Where Odeath is your victory? Where O death is your sting?. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory throughour Lord Jesus Christ!” The Spirit of Christ raises us up to find joy and hope in our challenges—physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, financial—and to rise above these realities, to rise above our pain. And wefirmly grip our living hope of abundant life, not only in this life, but in heaven where our complete and lastinghealing will come. Immanuel, this Easter and always let us join with Renoir and proclaim together “painpasses, but beauty remains!”Thanks be to God!Pastor JohnEaster 2018April 2018

Covenant GroupsWhat are they? Can I join one? How do we do it?A Covenant Group is a fancy name for a small group. A small group is a group of roughly 5-12 or morepeople from any station in life who commit to meeting together on a regular basis for fellowship, food, prayer, friend support, sharing thoughts about the Bible or joining in a formal Bible study. In many ways, other Immanuel groups function similarly: Men's Breakfast Bible Study, Crafters, Seekers, Lydia Circle,Agape Circle, Choir, Immanuel Meals, and ministry teams, just to name a few. We presently have 4 or 5covenant groups here at Immanuel that have been meeting over the years who enjoy shared interestsand each other’s friendship. If you’re not a part of a covenant group and are interested in participatingone, we are seeking to create space for new groups to form.On Sunday, April 22nd we will take a brief time during worship to share about the vision andpurpose of Immanuel Covenant Groups. We will have a sign-up table in the patio for those who wouldbe interested in joining a group. A few people who are in present covenant groups will be there as well toshare their experiences and to answer any questions you might have.At Immanuel our Covenant Groups are a grassroots offering, each group taking on its own personality.Your group will meet once a month until the end of the year. At the end of the year, all participants candecide to continue meeting with their current group, consider forming another group, or take a break fromtheir group for scheduling reasons or personal circumstances.Covenant Groups are encouraged to eat together in your homes, participate in mission projects or socialevents together, and share in activities you all enjoy like hiking, cooking, bike riding, or creating your ownbook of the month club. Your group can decide. If your group would like to join in a formal Bible study, you can ask Pastor John for suggestions to choose from.Whatever you choose, Immanuel Covenant Groups are a great way to deepen friendships, expand yourconnection with Immanuel, and to grow in your faith. We hope you will consider joining an ImmanuelCovenant Group!Grace and Peace,Pastor John and the Communications and Connections Team

UNAFRAIDLIVING WITH COURAGE AND HOPEIN UNCERTAIN TIMESFear is a complex emotion. Sometimes it saves us. More often itrobs us of the life we want. But we can take our lives back. You'dbe hard-pressed to overstate the extent to which fear, anxiety, and worry permeate our lives today. Fear wreaks havoc on ourrelationships and communities. It leads us into making baddecisions. It holds us back from the very pursuits that promisefulfillment and joy. Making matters worse, not a week goes by when some new threator calamity isn't dominating the headlines. Why are there so many tragedies? wewonder. What will happen next?We know Jesus tells us, “Do not be afraid,” but with everything going on in the world, how is it possible not to be anxious? In this five-week study based on his bookUnafraid, Hamilton explores the worries and fears most of us experience. We can learnto identify fears and discover practical steps for overcoming them all in the light ofScripture and a faith that promises again and again that we can live with courage andhope.April 8th –Understanding and Countering Your FearsApril 15th –Crime, Race, Terrorism, and PoliticsApril 22nd–Failure, Disappointing Others, Insignificance, and LonelinessMay 6th–Apocalypse, Change, Missing Out, and FinancesMay 20th–Aging, Illness, Dying, and Fear of the Lord*Books are available for purchase*All classes are held in Witherspoon Hall Rooms #12-13 from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m.

YAVs in TucsonThe Tucson Borderlands Young Adult Volunteer program is celebrating its 15th yearof hosting volunteers in Tucson! For the past 15 years, we have welcomed youngpeople (ages 19-30) into mission service in Southern Arizona. Volunteers commit tospending a year with the program, living together in intentional Christian community, exploring simple living, and listening for God’s speaking in their lives and in the world.Right now, three dedicated young women - Rachel, Andie, and Tali - are halfwaythrough their year of service. Their lives are in the midst of a time of transformation!Andie wrote a reflection recently about simple living. She says:“In college I began to understand how my life choices and consumption was affectingthe world. I became a vegetarian in response to climate change and the meatindustry. I only drank fair trade coffee, in response to the unethical treatment of coffeegrowers. But it wasn’t until the YAV program that I understood how living simply helpsme connect to the world in a deeper way. My choice to live simply has enabled me tomake deep relationships with the Tucson community. To me, simple living is not onlyconscious consumption, but to do so in a way that increases awareness of thosearound you and increases connection to other people. I am excited to continue livingsimply beyond my YAV year.”The time that young people spend in service in Tucsonchanges their lives! After their service, they continue livingsimply, supporting community, and working for justice. Please pray for Tali, Andie, and Rachel over the next fivemonths as they complete their term of service in Tucson.Pray that God walk with them and build them into kind, wise, compassionate leaders for the church and the world. You can read more about their journey at tucsonborderlandsyav.org/blog.Alison Wood, YAV Coordinator in Tucson
