2019Connecting Family – Friends Faith through ChristPastoral Reflections: “A SUMMER OF MEMORABLEMOMENTS AND DELIGHTFUL DAYS”Danny Noonan is a grandpa! I saw it with my own two eyes but I still find it hard to believe.Growing up, I fell in love with comedies. Early on I liked the slapstick of the Three Stooges and Monty Python, but I grewout of that. Although I liked Leslie Nielsen in the “Naked Gun” Series and the iconic “Airplane,” I was more drawn toGene Wilder and Richard Pryor in “Stir Crazy” and “Silver Streak.” However, my favorite comedian was (and I still thinkis), Bill Murray. I first saw him in the movie about a summer camp called “Meatballs” at the end of my senior year in highschool. I thought Murray playing Tripper as the head camp counselor was brilliant. Of course I loved his work in“Stripes,” “Ghostbusters (I not II!), “Scrooged,” “Groundhog Day,” and “What About Bob.” But the piece de resistance forme was his work in “Caddyshack” where Murray played the unsophisticated assistant greenskeeper, Carl Spackler. If your comedic taste only has a palate for elegant and classy humor then this movie is not a dish for you! The humorwould appeal more to those in a junior high class room than a high society boardroom, but I confess he makes me laughuproariously! To be sure, I along with others who ease the stresses of life with bromides from movies, can recite byheart a number of the classic lines by Murray and his fellow cast members: Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase and TedKnight. In the movie, “Caddyshack,” a young caddy is played by the actor Michael O’Keefe who is named Danny Noonan. In thestoryline Noonan is trying to make money to go to college. Hearing about a scholarship that can be had if he wins the“Caddy Tournament,” we are treated to his golfing and other shenanigans. Although this movie debuted over forty yearsago, Danny Noonan will forever be the goofy teen hoping to get into college while spending his summer being a Caddyat “Bushwood Country Club,” in my mind’s eye and memory.cont’d . page 2What’s INSIDE234-5678Pastoral Reflections cont’dFrom the PastorSchool NewsSummer Park Schedule(Mom’s Group Bible Study)ACTS 2Memorials / Stephen Ministry /Thrivent / Manna91011121314Mason Wasz FoundationGolf OutingLevi Comfort ClipsWorship & Ministry NotesMember UpdatesSHARE JoyFive.10.10 / GO Fish 5k /Help Wanted15161718-1920-2122JUNE CalendarImmanuel Golf OutingGO FISH 5kDorcas Society /LWMLYouth MinistryWorship Times

So imagine my surprise when Joanne and I were watching the movie “Instant Family” starring Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrneand Isabela Moner and “Danny Noonan” (Michael O’Keefe) came on the screen playing grandpa! I said it out loud,“Danny Noonan is a grandpa!?”Oh how could this be? Danny Noonan is a teenager, he’s supposed to still have a full head of wavy red hair not wisps ofwhite fringes on a halfway bald pate. He’s supposed to be skinny almost scrawny, not stoop shouldered, hollow chested, with a paunch under his belt. Indeed time has marched on.I know it’s silly to think that Danny Noonan should be the same age as when I first saw the movie but who can know howone’s mind faces some facts. Forty years has not only passed by Danny Noonan, they’ve also passed me by too. Couldit be that in my mind’s eye I considered myself to be as young and youthful as Danny Noonan? Could it be the shock ofseeing Danny as a grandpa was really a dose of reality to me that I too am really old enough to be a grandpa? Oh, don’tget me wrong, I love being a grandpa, but as strange as this sounds, I didn’t think I was really old enough to be a grandpa.Huh. I really am old enough (like Danny Noonan) to be a grandpa.I’ve lived nearly three score of years. . I was present in every moment of them, but so many are lost in the recesses ofmy memory, and even the important ones that had major impacts on me get a little fuzzy over time. The Psalmist says in Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom,” King Davidsays it more bluntly in Psalm 39:4 “Show me my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is mylife.”I’m trying to be more intentional now about “numbering my days aright.” I want to take measure of the moments, especially those that reveal more of God’s love to me and us and to the ones I love the most – family and friends.Life is full of blinks. See, it seems I just graduated from college and then I blinked. Then I got married and I blinked.I graduated from seminary and I blinked. Rebecca was born and I blinked. Abby was born and I blinked. I came toImmanuel and I blinked. Joshua was born and I blinked. Now after 25 years of blinking at Immanuel all my kids havegraduated from college, Becca got married and had baby Nathan, Abby and Josh are gainfully employed and I’m herestaring out my office window seeing the PK kids on the playground wondering where the time had gone. It only seemsa few blinks ago that I myself was climbing on the jungle gym.As summer begins, I want to number the days aright. I want to measure the moments. King David said it right “You havemade my days a mere handbreadth ” (Psalm 39:5). As Jesus has given me eternal life as a free gift through His ownsacrificial death and resurrection, I want to use my life as a response and be intentional about the moments, hours anddays that I spend.I invite you all to consider doing the same thing. Especially this summer, measure then mark your days focusing on thelove Jesus offers you and the love you can offer Him and the important and special people in your life. The Latin phraseTEMPEST FUGIT is true. It simply means “Time flies!” The fact of the matter is “Tempest is Fugitting” faster than ever!Danny Noonan is old enough to be a grandpa. So am I. I was told by the older family members life would go fast. It’strue. May this summer be a time of memorable moments and delightful days for you and your loved ones. I’m aiming formine to be full of those! A blessed summer to you all!Yours in Jesus with much love,Rev. William P. YonkerSenior Pastor2

FROM PASTOR BAERWOLF As I write these words to you, some neighbors from across the parking lot hereat church are packing up many of their belongings into moving trucks. A neighboron our court is doing the same thing—large trucks and vans have been therehauling things away after their house was sold. It must be moving day! What about you—what is moving in your life right now? Maybe it’s a teenagerwho is ready to graduate high school. Maybe a son or daughter who just got theirfirst job and needs transportation. Maybe a grown up child is packing up theirthings to move into the city to start their first job in their chosen career. Maybe akindergartner is thinking about moving into first grade and trying to figure out whatit will be like having Mrs. Dougherty as her teacher instead of Mrs. Anderson.Maybe you are contemplating retirement and trying to figure out how things will all work out. Maybe you are makingmuch more difficult decisions about pursuing another round of chemo or more radiation treatments. All of those activitiesinvolves moving—from here to there—either in your mind as you think through them or physically from place to place.Whatever is moving in your life right now please recall these words of Hebrews 11 where it says, “By faith Abrahamobeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowingwhere he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac andJacob, heirs with him of the same promise.” Later that same chapter reminds us that Abraham and all the saints whohave gone before were moving through their days always looking forward to that which was yet to be—always focusedon that home in heaven which Jesus is preparing for us.So in a sense—it is moving day every day for the child of God. Think with me of how that impacts your life—what itmeans to be so ready for Jesus to return and take us home to live with Him in heaven. What a gift Jesus gives us todayto commit to worshiping every week over the summer to be able to hear the amazing good news of sins forgiven andlife restored through all that Jesus has done. What a gift Jesus gives us today to become involved in some meaningfulministry here at Immanuel. What a gift Jesus gives us today to reflect on how best to use the resources the Lord hasgiven to you to make a difference through the work of Immanuel Lutheran Church and School.Wherever the Lord moves you today I am praying that you can sense that He promises never to leave us, never to forsakeus. The Lord promises to be with us until the very end of the age. The Lord promises that He holds us close in His tenderarms of care. The Lord promises to bless us and keep us, to make His face shine upon us, to share His favor and Hispeace in our lives today and every day.Peace and much joy—Pastor Baerwolf3

AMPC But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence withinaccomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace BRGBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace CJBBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace ESVBut the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace NIVBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace This verse is almost identical in every translation I referenced for this note.I wanted to see if in any translation it was recorded as ‘the fruits’ instead of‘the fruit’. Why? Well, I think sometimes I use this verse as a check list to see how well I’m are doingin my relationship to Christ.Once I realized that the FRUIT of the Holy Spirit is characterized by ALL of the adjectives mentioned(love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) I began towonder why I didn’t exhibit them all. Then I began to understand that maybe I had some naturaltendencies towards being kind and less tendencies towards being patient. Did I measure my spiritualgrowth by how well my natural tendencies were developing and evident to others? I think I did. Some theologians have suggested that the biggest stumbling block to growing in your faith-walk is ourgood nature. If you read Chapter 5 in Galatians, you’ll see how the Holy Spirit is the power that guidesus to developing our full Christian nature and crucifying our self or sinful nature. I say self becausesome of us have some pretty strong good natures. It is very possible to be active in the church and contribute to other people changing their lives; andyet, if your own life isn’t changing and exhibiting the FRUIT of the Holy Spirit it is time to run to theLord and find answers in Him. Because change is inevitable in the Lord.Is it possible that God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit for you are partly a concept and not areality? How can I not be joyful if I recognized the beauty of what He’s done for me? How can I not bepatient if I hear Him say, “Father forgive them”? How can I not be kind when I see Him pour himselfout on others? Why do I seek approval from others unless I don’t know that His approval is all I need?(integrity) How can I not be gentle when I see Him meek and holy of heart? If you are, like me struggling with the many conflicts in the world and find a worldly solution as theinitial response, I pray that you’ll dive into the Lord and let Him make the necessary internal changesso that you exhibit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. C.S. Lewis describes well the Christian who has allowed the Holy Spirit to change him in hisbook, Mere Christianity. Timothy Keller, speaks through his pod cast on the very same subject – towhich I give both credit for this shared thought.Sunday Mornings @ 9:30-10:30 a.m.Pastor Phillip Baerwolf Luther Hall B Pastor Bruce Meissner Luther Hall CJoe Glombicki Luther Hall A7

This past year has seen so much joy being shared. From driving around ourcommunities and seeing Share Joy signs in people’s front yards to Joy Manmaking an appearance at the Spring Operetta—Immanuel Lutheran Churchand School has been drawing people closer to Christ as together we Share Joy.With your help, our Immanuel school kids packed and sent 500 Kits for Kids tothe Congo and Cambodia. Each of these kits are filled with very generous first aid supplies and will begiven for families to use in taking care of children in their homes. As this fiscal year ends at the end of June, we wanted you to know of some special things that are stillhappening that we are hoping you will be able to help make possible. Because of some unforeseencircumstances, we are projecting ending the year nearly 150,000 behind of where we thought we wouldbe at this time during our budgeting process. And yet there is still so much more left for us to do includingthe final project of Share Joy and that is to give a week’s offering to our friends at Project C.U.R.E. sothey can send a shipping container filled with medical supplies to a regional hospital in the DominicanRepublic. We also will be looking for volunteers to visit Project C.U.R.E. and help stuff that containerwith the material we are sending to that hospital.During the month of June we are asking for you to pray for a season of generosity here at Immanuel.Pray that Jesus would open our hearts to His love and kindness and pray that we would generouslyrespond to this need so that we can finish this fiscal year in a healthy place—with our bills paid andour planned giving complete. Pray that we can send this container to this hospital in the DominicanRepublic and pray that many will step forward to help bring this Share Joy initiative to completion.Your weekly giving is so essential to making all this happen and we are including in this newsletteran envelope which you may use to give a special gift to Immanuel so that the Lord can once againsurprise us with how we Share Joy with one another. These gifts are over and above your plannedweekly giving to our church and school ministry. Your gifts to this Share Joy fund will be used to makesure we finish this fiscal year strong as well as being able to ship this container to the hospital whereit is so urgently needed. You may also email Pastor Baerwolf if you would like to be included inopportunities to visit the Project C.U.R.E. warehouse in Woodridge and help pack this shippingcontainer for the Dominican Republic. His email address is pbaerwolf@immanuel-ed.org.Thanks so much for helping to Share Joy here at Immanuel—what a blessing to be part of a churchand school family so filled with the joy of Christ that we desire to share it with others. We hope andpray that together the Lord will once again surprise us with His joy.13

Immanuel and I blinked. Joshua was born and I blinked. Now after 25 years of blinking at Immanuel all my kids have graduated from college, Becca got married and had baby Nathan, Abby and Josh are gainfully employed and I'm here staring out my office window seeing the PK kids on the playground wondering where the time had gone.
