January 16, 2022 Second Sunday in Ordinary TimeOur Lady of Mount Carmel Parish (412) 367-9001

Pastor’s PerspectiveReverend John R. gh.orgDon’t Panic. .if you see a couple pews missing in three of our churches. They have been deliberatelyremoved for a good reason.Because our Mass attendance is higher than it was a year ago—and continues to climbsteadily—we are aware that the number of people receiving Holy Communion is alsoincreasing. This means we need to use more Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion(more easily referred to as EM’s) to distribute the Eucharist without unnecessary delay.Placing more EM’s across the front of the church—we’ve tried this—only causes confusionand collisions, which we like to avoid for safety reasons. The solution is to remove a pew ineach section to provide a “break” that will enable a quicker return after receiving.Beginning this weekend, you will find this new “break” at Saint Athanasius, Incarnation, and Saint Teresa. At Saint Sebastian, these breaks have existed for many years, and they notonly improve the Communion procedure but also make getting around the church moreflexible in general. In fact, because of its length, Saint Sebastian church is divided into threesections, with two breaks on either side.If there is a concern that this will reduce the seating in the churches, well, yes it will, butonly minimally. Saint Teresa will lose about 16 seats, and both Incarnation and SaintAthanasius will lose only about a dozen each.To a small extent, this will alter the way you approach Holy Communion and return to yourpew, but the procedure is so logical that there will likely be very little to get used to.In Other News:Many thanks to Devlin Funeral Home and Schellhaas Funeral Home for providing the beautiful Places of Worship art calendars. Their arrivalwas a little late due to shipping delays, which have become frequent lately. For a while wewere afraid that they wouldn’t arrive until 2023 .This Monday (January 17) is MartinLuther King, Jr., Day, a national holiday. The Parish Center will be closed and the staffwill have the day off, but Masses will be on schedule .Stay tuned for more news .Something to think about: “The biggest communication problem is wedon’t listen to understand. We listen to reply.”- Unknown

WorshipSecond Sunday in Ordinary TimeToday’s readings reveal the transformative effect God hasupon the world. Isaiah prophesies that God will transformthe Israelites and their land from “forsaken” to “espoused.”Paul extols the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which transformseach person differently, but all to serve the same Lord. Jesustransforms water into wine at a wedding in Cana, revealinghis glory and inspiring his disciples to believe in him.Listening to God’s word, let us consider how God transforms us and our world.Ted RybkaThank You, Music Ministry! We concluded the Christmas season last week, and I wish to offer my sincerest thanks andheartfelt congratulations to our many musicministers here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Our Cantors, Adult Choir, Handbell Choir, SpiritBand, Instrumentalists, Good News Band, andeven our Resurrection Choir, have been workingso hard throughout Advent and Christmas to helpmake the seasons extra special for all of us.It hasn’t been easy for all of these groups to try to cram in rehearsals (and extra rehearsals) thatran into overtime while masking and adhering to Covid safety guidelines. Let’s face it. Singingwith masks on is difficult, and if you’re a trained singer who sings expressively within a largechoir or vocal group, singing with masks on is even more difficult. Nevertheless, theymanaged to overcome every obstacle and helped to make all of our liturgies so beautiful.Thank you, music ministry! It’s been great to have you back. The glorious sounds you createhave been sorely missed, and I should know better than anyone—I’m your number one fan! Here are the winning numbers for our weekly 100 “MoneyMonday” winners for the entire month of December 2021:December 6th - # 074December 13th - # 151December 20th - # 209December 27th - # 224And the special “Stocking Stuffer” drawing on December 25th(Christmas Day) for 1,000 is # 283. Congratulations!Remember to keep checking your mailbox as our weekly cashdrawings continue until March 2022. Good luck!

Faith FormationSecond Sunday in Ordinary TimeGod’s Grace is Free!Breaking Open the Word: John 2:1-11Today’s reading is the first miracle story in theDeacon BobKosloskyGospel of John. Jesus turns water into choicewine at the wedding feast of Cana! ThroughoutJohn’s Gospel, Jesus’ “hour” referred to the combined momentsof his passion, death, resurrection and ascension. At thewedding in Cana, Jesus responds to his mother’s request byperforming a miracle to symbolize that hour.Listen to the Word: As you hear this familiar gospel reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touchesyour heart? What lingers in your memory?Look into Your Life:Children: What is one special gift that God has given to you to share with your friends, classmates or family?Youth: Jesus got his start in ministry through the urging of his mother. Who urges you to pray, go to Church, and do good works?Adults: God fills each of us with grace and gifts. What is one grace or gift that you have shared with yourcoworkers, friends or family?Incarnate the Word: Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sundayreadings. Go for a winter walk or drive with your family as a reminder of the gifts of nature. As you walktogether, point out all the wondrous gifts of creation. Make an arrangement of winter gifts to remind the familyof God’s abundance. Discuss the different ministries within Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and the peoplewho use their gifts for the community. Have each family member write an email / note of appreciation to oneof these members of the community. Each evening at dinnertime ask a different family member to name onegift that each other member of the family brings to the family.Dates to Remember in 2022!
