PAUL TURNERChristmas Time comes to its closewhen we celebrate the Baptism ofthe Lord, an event recorded in allfour Gospels. To begin his publicministry, Jesus presented himself tobe baptized by John the Baptist, andGod manifested Jesus as the DivineSon.Because we associate baptismwith the forgiveness of sins, theidea that the sinless Jesus wouldundergo baptism seems out ofplace. The evangelists must havethought the same; as a whole, theydownplay the incident. But thebaptism of Jesus had nothing to do2NATIVITY CATHOLIC CHURCHwith forgiveness; it had everythingto do with manifestation. It was anew beginning because it publiclyrevealed Jesus’ identity, and thattestimony came not from just anywitness but from God.Three incidents in the Bible aretraditionally called the “epiphany”events or the “manifestations” ofJesus, newly arrived on the biblicalscene: the visit of the Magi, thebaptism, and the miracle at thewedding in Cana. Prior to 1969, weheard all three of these Scriptures insuccessive weeks: January 6, January13, and on the following Sunday. All three stories form a unitbecause they progressively revealthe identity, the authority, and thePRAYER REQUESTRequest a prayer atnativity.org/prayer-requestor call the Parish Officeat (407) 322 - 3961power of Jesus. In today’s liturgical calendar, theSunday readings spread over athree-year cycle. On the Baptismof the Lord, we hear a differentevangelist’s account each year. Onlyin year C does the following Sundayfeature the Gospel of the WeddingFeast at Cana to unify the threecelebrations. In the United States, we celebrateEpiphany on a Sunday. But incountries where the Epiphany is aholy day of obligation, it is celebratedon January 6. In the United States, the Baptism of the Lord is usuallythe Sunday after the Epiphany.Bulletin Inserts for the Liturgical Life of the Parish:The Liturgical Year 2020 Archdiocese of Chicago:Liturgy Training Publications. Making this distribution canlower your taxable income, which may also reduce theimpact to certain tax credits and deductions such asSocial Security and Medicare. A QCD makes it easierto use your IRA assets to make charitable gifts to yourfavorite causes. Under current law, when you makea withdrawal from your traditional IRA (or certainRoth IRAs), the IRS will tax it as income, even if youimmediately directed it to a charity. You will still receivea tax deduction for your donation, but various tax rulescan prevent the deduction from fully offsetting yourtaxable income. As a result, many have chosen not touse IRA assets for lifetime gifts. The QCD eliminates thisproblem because it is not included in your income forthe year. What gifts qualify for a charitable IRA rollover?A gift that qualifies is: Made if you are age 70 ½ or older, prior tocompleting the distribution Transferred from a traditional or Roth IRA directlyto a permissible public charity, such as The CatholicFoundation of Central Florida, Diocese of Orlando, parish or other Diocesan ministries. Completed during the applicable tax yearIs there a limit on the amount I can give?Yes. The maximum distribution permitted by theIRS is 100,000 per person, per year. What about my required minimum distribution? If you have not already taken your requiredminimum distribution in a given year, this gift cancount toward satisfying this requirement. Can I also get an income tax deduction? No. IRA rollover gifts are not deductible – but themoney is never included in your income in the firstplace, which for many people is more favorablethan a deduction. Please contact Casey Schroder at The CatholicFoundation of Central Florida at 407-246-4802 for moreinformation and other ways to support your Church.
