Christmas At House Of Hope

THEIssue #264 December 2018The House of Hope Presbyterian ChurchTraditional ChristmasTableaux ServiceMuch of our history and traditions atHouse of Hope center around Christmas. It was on Christmas Eve, in a wildernessoutpost, that five men and women offaith met to celebrate the birth of ourLord. It was the beginning of House ofHope in 1849.One of the most meaningful of our traditions is the Traditional Christmas Tableaux Service. Held originally on Christmas morning in the Parish House nearly100 years ago, the beauty and reverenceof its message so impressed the Eldersthat they asked for its presentation in thesanctuary.Christmas at House of HopeSunday, December 2First Sunday of AdventSunday, December 23Fourth Sunday of Advent10 a.m. WorshipRev. Clergy Message“In the bleak midwinter, frosty windmade moan, earth stood hardas iron, water like astone.”Advent songs begin in the darkness. Yetin the face of the darkness, we keep lighting candles. Advent is a time when werecognize the tragedy and gloom in theworld—and yet we recognize that Godkeeps giving us the light of hope.Christopher Reeve was the actor whoplayed Superman in the movies. But inreal life, he suffered a paralyzing spinalcord injury. Surely that threatened toshroud his life in darkness. Yet he didmore amazing things to help peoplefrom his wheelchair than he ever didas an actor. As he stated so profoundly,“once you choose hope, anything ispossible.”Advent is when we, as Christians, makeit clear: we choose hope. The hope thatGod gives, which makes all thingspossible. Advent is a time of both waitingand fulfillment. Waiting—the time whenhope gives us the courage to face thechallenges and tragedies. And Adventleads to fulfillment—the joy that hopehas arrived, has become fulfilled, thathope has been born.We know Christ is coming. So we prepareourselves in our attitudes, our expectations and our actions. Advent leads toour awareness: Christ is here. It makessense to sing both Advent songs andChristmas carols during this season. Ithelps us live into our hope. It helps usexperience hope becoming reality.Like children, we want to hear the storyagain. We hear something new everytime. Or, perhaps, we are in a new placein life, and need to hear the power ofhope reverberate through the darkness,as angels sing from the heavens again.Silent night! Holy night!Shepherds quake at the sight,Glories stream from heaven afar,Heavenly hosts sing, “Alleluia.”Christ the Savior is born!Christ the Savior is born!May hope be born for you this Advent, and may Christmas become new andreal for us all.—Andrew McDonaldTransitional Pastor/Head of Staff10 a.m.Sunday, December 2First Sunday of AdventMotet Choir:Advent anthemsSt. Nicholas Choir:Bereite dich, Zion(from Christmas Oratorio), BachSunday, December 9Second Sunday of AdventMotet Choir:Advent anthemsSt. Nicholas and St. Cecilia Choirs:Infant Holy, Danish carol, arr. RecommendedSpiritual ReadApprenticed to Hope: A Sourcebook forDifficult Times by Rev. Julie NeraasAs we come toDecember andthink about theend of 2018, I hopethere are manywonderful memories you can callto mind of family celebrations, travel ortime at the lake, and moments of greatbeauty whether in nature, an art museum, or in the midst of a poem. All ofthese surely feed the soul and elevateour resilience.Yet, this season arrives just a monthafter All Saints’ Day which possibly castsa shadow on the holidays. It can beespecially difficult if it is among the firstyears or anniversary without a belovedfamily member. Perhaps you or someoneyou know was diagnosed with cancerthis year and daily life has shifted fromordinary routines to a cancer treatmentlifestyle. Stories of the opioid epidemicfill the news and the CDC reports thatsuicide rates have risen 30 percent since1999. These are not just news stories, they touch our lives.Division, anxiety, stress, and sadness canworsen in December; it’s something towatch for in ourselves and in others. Noone, male or female, young or old, rich orpoor is immune from physical, mental oremotional duress. There is no shame inour human need for help and community when sad or hurt. This year’s book selections are all aboutthe practice of our faith—or praxis as it iscalled in educational circles. Our suggested read for December is Apprenticedto Hope: A Sourcebook for Difficult Times.Rev. Julie Neraas writes about hope inthe midst of struggle from many pointsof view. These thoughts on hope arepresented in short essays so one canread the book from beginning to end, pick out a title from the table of contentsbased on mood, or simply open to a section and see what it brings.Stephen Ministers are also availablefor ongoing support for both men andwomen in the midst of life’s challenges orlosses.Other suggestions for help:Call a pastor via the church office at(651) 227-6311. Using texts for Advent, you will experience this ancient prayerform in a group setting, though it is easilyadapted to individual practice and canbe incorporated into your prayer life.Learn more and RSVP at: programs/lectio-divina/3

Steps on the Transition Process to a New Head PastorI want to share an update on the transition process as House of Hope moves toward a new Head Pastor. Of course, ministry is both about the planned steps andthe unexpected interruptions that can beimportant parts of the journey. I includesome of those surprises, as they are important for what comes next. Along theway there may be some additions to theprocess that may helpful. I would expectthe Pastor Nominating Committee to beunderway early in 2019. Get to know the congregation andthe staff. Build relationships with congrega-tional leaders for trust and open communication. Learn how Session and committeesare functioning. Address immediate pastoral needs. Interview congregational leaders forinsights about the congregation. Say goodbye to Rev. Jeff Foels andDiane Smith. With Personnel Committee, developjob description for Transitional Associate Pastor. With Personnel Committee, developjob description for Director of Administration. Do search for Transitional AssociatePastor and for Director of Administration (in process). Develop and implement a few newideas to see how open the system isto new ideas. Have a Leadership Retreat with Session, Trustees, and program staff tobegin thinking about new directions.ooGather 12–15 focus groups to listen tohopes, dreams, and goals of members.ooPercept sociological review of congregational context.ooGather a group to talk about thechurch history, as it helps us seefuture directions.ooGather a group of 20–30 people forthree meetings to develop a short listof core values.ooTest the core values out with the congregation in a variety of groups.ooDevelop a list of core values.ooDevelop a list of goals and priorities.ooDevelop a Position Description for theHead Pastor.ooCongregation nominates a PastorNominating Committee (PNC)ooPNC (with assistance from Presbytery)does nationwide search for the nextHouse of Hope Head Pastor. If you have questions or insights, I wouldenjoy hearing from you.—Andrew McDonaldTransitional Pastor/Head of StaffProject Home at House of HopeJenny Stevens, Project LeadFor 21 years, our congregation hashelped homeless families in our community through Project Home.
