INTRODUCTIONFirst and ForemostThe concept of spiral wound gasket constructionwas originated by Flexitallic in 1912, inauguratingthe beginning of a new era in safe, effective sealing. The primary purpose for this development was theincreasingly severe temperatures and pressuresused by U.S. refinery operators in the first half ofthe century.Metal StripFiller MaterialThe necessity for a gasket to have the ability torecover cannot be over emphasised. The effectsof pressure and temperature fluctuations, thetemperature differential across the flange face, together with bolt stress relaxation and creep, demand a gasket with adequate flexibility andrecovery to maintain a seal even under these varyingservice conditions. The Flexitallic Spiral WoundGasket is the precision engineered solution to suchproblems, meeting the most exacting conditions ofboth temperature and pressure in flanged joints andsimilar assemblies and against virtually every knowncorrosive and toxic media. This publication is designed to facilitate thespecification and ordering of standard FlexitallicSpiral Wound Gaskets. Dimensional data for the basicstyles - Style CG, Style CGI, Style R and Style RIR aredetailed on respective tables. For more information visit www.flexitallic.eu3

GASKET IDENTIFICATIONGaskets are colour coded to help expedite the selection and identity of the gaskets you need. The colour on the outsideedge of the centering ring identifies both the winding and filler materials. The metallic winding material is designated bya solid colour. The filler materials are designated by colour stripes at equal intervals on the outside edge of the centeringring. Flexitallic colour coding meets the industry standard for metal and filler materials listed in ASME B16.20.METALLICWINDINGMATERIALSThe metallic windingmaterial is designated bya solid colour identificationaround the outside edge ofthe centering e347SSBlue310SSNo colour304LSSNo colour309SSNo colour430SSNo colourAlloy 20BlackTitanium PurpleInconel 600/625GoldIncoloy 800/825WhiteInconel X750No ColourHastelloy C276BeigeHastelloy B2BrownNickel 200RedZirconiumNo colourCarbon SteelSilverPTFEWhite StripeFlexicarb Gray StripeNON METALLICFILLERS4Monel OrangeDuplexNo colourThe gasket filler materialsare designated by anumber of stripes placedat equal intervals aroundthe outside edge of thecentering ring.Flexite Super Pink StripeCeramicLight Green StripeThermiculite 835Light Blue StripeFor more information visit www.flexitallic.eu

GASKET IDENTIFICATION WHAT GASKET SHOULD I SELECT?Style CG - Utilises anexternal ring which accuratelycenters gasket on flange face, provides additional radialstrength to prevent gasketblow-out and acts as acompression stop. A generalpurpose gasket suitable foruse with flat face and raisedface flanges up to andinclusive of class 2500.See note at bottom of page 8for inner ring requirements.Style CGI - A Style CGgasket fitted with internalring which gives an additionalcompression limiting stopand provides heat andcorrosion barrier protectinggasket windings andpreventing flange erosion.Suitable for use with flatface and raised face flanges.See note at bottom of page 8for inner ring requirements.Style R - Basic constructiontype. Inner and outerdiameters are reinforced withseveral plies of metal withoutfiller to give greater stabilityand better compressionand sealing characteristics.Suitable for tongue andgroove or male and female orgrooved to flat face flangeassemblies.Style RIR - Solid inner metalring acts as a compressionstop and fills the annularspace between flange boreand the inside diameter ofthe gasket.Designed toprevent accumulation ofsolids, reduce turbulentflow of process fluids andminimise erosion at flangefaces. Suitable for male andfemale pipe flanges.Published as an indication of which Flexitallic spiral wound gasket bestsuits different pipe flange configurations and service conditions.SELECTION GUIDEFlange FaceRaised FaceFlat FaceMale and FemaleTongue and GrooveFlat Face to RecessStyle CGStyle CGStyle R*Style R*Style R*Style CGI**Style CGI**Style RIR**Style RIR**Style RIR**RecommendedGasket StyleFor general dutiesRecommendedGasket StyleFor high pressure/temperature duty, also for gasketswith PTFE filler, corrosive orfluctuating pressureor temperatureservice conditions.*It is essential that Style R gaskets are fitted with a compression stop. Without a correctly dimensioned stop the gasket can easily be over-compressedresulting in failure. To provide a compression stop the depth of the tongue, groove or recess should be controlled to provide optimum compressed gasketthickness with metal to metal contact on the flange faces (see tables on Page 28 and 32).** See note at bottom of page 8 for inner ring requirements6For more information visit www.flexitallic.eu
