ScopeForewordNational Electrical Installation Standards (NEIS )are designed to improve communication amongspecifiers, purchasers, and suppliers of electricalconstruction services. They define a minimumbaseline of quality and workmanship for installingelectrical products and systems. NEIS are intendedto be referenced in contract documents for electricalconstruction projects. The following language isrecommended:Motor control centers shall be installed andmaintained in accordance with NECA 402,Standard for Installing and Maintaining MotorControl Centers (ANSI).Use of NEIS is voluntary, and the National ElectricalContractors Association assumes no obligationor liability to users of this publication. Existenceof a standard shall not preclude any member ornonmember of NECA from specifying or usingalternate construction methods permitted byapplicable regulations. This publication is intended to comply with theNational Electrical Code (NEC). Because they arequality standards, NEIS may in some instancesgo beyond the minimum safety requirements ofthe NEC. It is the responsibility of users of thispublication to comply with state and local electricalcodes when installing electrical products and systems.Suggestions for revisions and improvements to thisstandard are welcome. They should be addressed to:NECA Standards & Safety3 Bethesda Metro Center, Suite 1100Bethesda, MD 20814(301) 657-3110 telephone(301) 215-4500 faxwww.neca-neis.orgneis@necanet.orgTo purchase NEIS, contact the NECA Order Desk at(301) 215-4504 tel, (301) 215-4500 fax, or orderdesk@necanet.org. Scope1.1Products and Applications IncludedThis standard describes the installation andmaintenance procedures for low-voltage motorcontrol centers (MCCs) rated 600 VAC or less with ahorizontal bus rating of 2,500 amperes or less.MCCs may be assembled with factory-installed drytype transformers and panelboards. The testingand maintenance of such dry-type transformers isaddressed in NECA 409, Standard for Installing andMaintaining Dry-Type Transformers (ANSI). Thetesting and maintenance of such panelboards isaddressed in NECA 407, Standard for Installing andMaintaining Panelboards (ANSI).1.2Regulatory and Other Requirementsa) All information in this publication is intendedto conform to the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA Standard 70). Installers should always followthe NEC , applicable state and local codes, andmanufacturer’s instructions when installing electricalequipment and systems.b) Only qualified persons as defined in the NECfamiliar with the construction and installation ofelectrical power distribution and control systemsand equipment should perform the technicalwork described in this publication. Administrativefunctions and other tasks can be performed underthe supervision of a qualified person. All workshould be performed in accordance with NFPA70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace(ANSI).c) General requirements for installing electricalproducts and systems are described in NECA 1,Standard for Good Workmanship in ElectricalConstruction (ANSI). Other National ElectricalInstallation Standards provide additional guidancefor installing particular types of electrical productsand systems. A complete list of NEIS is provided inAnnex A.1n

Motor control centers shall be installed and maintained in accordance with NECA 402, Standard for Installing and Maintaining Motor Control Centers (ANSI). Use of NEIS is voluntary, and the National Electrical Contractors Association assumes no obligation or liability to users of this publication. Existence
