L90 Line Differential SystemProtection and ControlL90 - Protection, Metering, Monitoring and ControlThe Multilin L90 Line Protection System offersa high degree of modularity in its design andfunctionality, providing superior performancewhile meeting the toughest requirements of themarketplace.Advanced protection and control features of thisrelay includes:Segregated Current Differential ProtectionThe L90 is a phase-segregated currentdifferential protection relay, which uses superiorand patented algorithms to address thechallenges of bandwidth, security, dependabilityand sensitivity in current differential relaying.Bandwidth requirements are effectivelyaddressed by means of a patented new dataconsolidation technique called “phaselets”. Thispermits application within a communicationsbandwidth of 64 Kbps, and can detect faultswithin a half-cycle plus channel delay. The L90 is the single point for protection, control, metering, and monitoring in one integrated devicethat can easily be connected directly into DCS or SCADA monitoring and control systems like ViewpointMonitoring as shown.Functional Block Diagram5279Monitoring50DDCLOSE50P450 22TRIP51P 51 2 50BF4232287L2492Data From/To Remote End(via Dedicated 459N59X27X2L90 Line Differential System2253334ANSI Device Numbers & Functions P27X324950BF50DD50G50NGround DistancePhase DistanceSynchronism CheckPhase UndervoltageAuxiliary UndervoltageSensitive Reverse PowerThermal OverloadBreaker FailureCurrent Disturbance DetectorGround Instantaneous OvercurrentNeutral Instantaneous Overcurrent50P50 251G51N51P51 25259N59P59X67 2Phase Instantaneous OvercurrentNegative Sequence Instantaneous OvercurrentGround Time OvercurrentNeutral Time OvercurrentPhase Time OvercurrentNegative Sequence Time OvercurrentAC Circuit BreakerNeutral OvervoltagePhase OvervoltageAuxiliary OvervoltageNegative Sequence Directional N67N67P68787981U/O87L81ROCOF87LGNeutral Directional OvercurrentPhase Directional OvercurrentPower Swing BlockingOut-of-Step TrippingAutomatic RecloserUnder/Over Frequency, df/dtSegregated Line Current DifferentialRate of Change of FrequencyGround Line Current Differential

L90 Line Differential SystemThe L90 innovative dual-slope-adaptiverestraint characteristic, based on estimatesof measurement errors, allows the relay tobe secure on severe external faults whilemaintaining sensitivity for internal faults. Theestimate of errors in the input currents permitsmore sensitive settings than those used in thetraditional percent differential schemes. The line differential element also has 2ndharmonic inrush-current inhibit for in-zonepower transformer protection. This functionalityenables the L30 to protect 2 or 3-terminal linesthat have a power transformer in between ends. The L90 approach to clock synchronization reliesupon precise and distributed synchronization.Clocks are phase-synchronized to each otherand frequency-synchronized to the powersystem frequency. Each relay compares its clockto the phase of the other clocks and makesappropriate adjustments. This allows for greatertransient ride-through for power system andcommunications disturbances.Enhanced additional security is provided by asensitive current disturbance detector, whichcan be used to supervise the current differentialelement. On multiplexed channels, channel asymmetrymay be expected due to path switching causingspurious differential currents, which canendanger the security of the differential system.By using GPS time synchronization, up to 10msof channel asymmetry can be compensated.Extra security has been implemented in the L90to ensure proper operation in the event of IRIG-Bsignal failure.Integrated channel monitoring provides realtime diagnostic data on the health of the L90.Communications channel deterioration orfailure will activate an alarm, and can be used toenable backup protection. Channel propagationdelay is monitored and adjusted according tovariations in communication paths.Communication TopologiesRelays can communicate through direct fiber,RS422, G.703, and IEEE C37.94 interfaces at64/128Kbps, with extensive channel monitoringand diagnostics. In a current differentialscheme, the L90s exchange data via thecommunication link, acting either as mastercollecting data, making calculations and makingall relevant trip and restraint decisions, or asslave only, transmitting current data to the oneacting as master. For two-terminal applications, use the redundant communications capabilityof the L90 for optimal reliability of the currentdifferential line protection. For this scheme, datais continuously transmitted over both channels,so if a failure occurs, the L90 will continue toprovide current differential protection. For three-terminal applications, advanced interrelay communication features eliminate theneed for redundant communication channelsdue to the ability of the L90 to automaticallyswitch between master and slave mode, maintaining a dependable system even with afailure of one of the communication channels.Distance ProtectionThe L90 shares the core of the D60 relay, whichis the distance function, and provides a highdegree of sensitivity and selectivity for all typesof faults. The distance function in the L90 comes with fivezones of phase distance and ground distance, providing the user maximum flexibility to caterto different applications, which include primaryline protection and backup protection forbusbars, generators, transformers and reactors. The L90 can be applied to power systems withGround Differential “87G”The ground differential function “87G” protectsagainst low-current single line-to-ground faults. It has a single slope characteristic and uses thevectorial sum of all in-zone phase currents tocalculate the neutral differential current, withthe maximum value of phase current being usedas restraint. This function, together with thephase differential, delivers enhanced sensibilityand selectivity to the protection scheme.Typical ApplicationsCharging Current CompensationFor long transmission lines and undergroundcables, the charging current may be large andresult in excessively high pickup settings. TheL90 can dynamically compensate the chargingcurrent, thus increasing its sensitivity to thefault current on long transmission lines.Enhanced Monitoring FeaturesThe L90 uses advanced error detection andsupervising functions to secure itself againstmisoperation due to erroneous data. High biterrors are addressed by means of computinga 32-bit CRC checksum, effectively addressingthe concerns of multiple bit errors due to highchannel noise.Typical two and three-terminal applications of L90. L90 supports a variety of media cards for signalingbetween L90’s including direct multimode or singlemode fiber, RS422, G.703 and IEEE C37.94.GEDigitalEnergy.com3

L90 Line Differential Systemdifferent earthing conditions, lines with in-zonetransformers or tapped transformer feeders, and overhead lines with series compensation. Each zone element for the phase and grounddistance can be independently set as quador mho characteristics with the flexibility ofdesigning different characteristic shapesto suit different power system conditions. The advanced comparator-based distanceelements provide the utmost security, sensitivityand selectivity for different types of faults.Superior digital filtering techniques providesecure and optimum reach accuracy evenunder worst-case CCVT transients. Securedirectional discrimination is achieved by usingpositive sequence memory voltage polarization, providing reliable directionality for worst-caseclose-in faults. Dual distance algorithms deliverexceptional security and speed performance toensure average operating times of 1.5 cycles for75% line reach and SIR 30, and 2.5 cycles for90% line reach and SIR 60.The L90 employs a well-proven algorithm forphase selection, which provides faster, secureand reliable faulted phase identification forsingle-pole tripping and proper fault-distancecalculation for a variety of power systemconditions. An additional voltage monitoringfunction provides extra security to the distanceelement , which can be used to block thedistance elements under voltage source fusefailure conditions.In-Zone Transformer CompensationPhase distance protection in the L90 can beused to detect faults through different types ofthree-phase wye/delta transformers, allowingapplication of the L90 for backup protectionon generators. VTs and CTs can be installedindependently of each other on either side ofthe power transformer. The relay automaticallycompensates for transformer connections, toguarantee accurate reach for any type of fault.Line Pickup (Switch-on-to Fault)Overcurrent FunctionsThe line pickup feature uses a combination ofundercurrent and undervoltage to identify aline that has been de-energized (line end open).Three instantaneous overcurrent elements areused to identify a previously de-energized linethat has been closed on to a fault. The L90 provides thermal overload, and timeand instantaneous overcurrent elements forphase, neutral, ground, negative sequence, phase and neutral directional. The neutraldirectional overcurrent element supportsenhanced dual polarization modes which canbe configured to prioritize on voltage or currentpolarization. Any of them can run in parallelwith primary differential protection or canbe programmed to run when the differentialelement is not available.Power Swing DetectionDynamic transients in the power system, due toshort-circuits, circuit switching, or load unbalancechanges, can travel across the power networkas power swings (characterized by fluctuatingcurrents and voltages). This can result in unwantedtripping since distance elements can respondto these power swings as faults. The L90 powerswing detection element provides both powerswing blocking and out-of-step tripping functions. The element measures the positive sequenceapparent impedance and traces its locus withrespect to either a two or three-step userselectable mho or quad operating characteristic.Negative sequence current supervisors provideextended selectivity for detecting evolving faultsthat may appear as a power swing event (faultswith slow moving impedance locus).Series Compensated LinesThe L90 provides enhanced stability andsecurity by employing an adaptive distancereach control to cope with the overreachingand sub-synchronous oscillations when appliedto, or in the vicinity of, series compensatedlines. For directional integrity the relay usesmemory voltage polarization and a multi-inputcomparator to deal with current inversion issuesin series compensated lines.Single-Pole TrippingThe L90 relay uses a state-of-the-art dual phaseselection algorithm that provides fast andaccurate fault type identification even underweak infeed conditions.Load EncroachmentDirect Transfer Trip (DTT)The load encroachment feature offersdiscrimination between line loading conditionsand fault conditions, especially for long linesunder heavy loads by supervising the distanceelements or any overcurrent element . Thisprevents unwanted tripping under heavyline load conditions and enables optimumoperation of the line while meeting regulatoryrequirements for line loading.Use the DTT feature of L90 to trip remotebreakers. Both single and three-pole DTTs aresupported. Up to eight signals can be sent overpilot communications channels, selectablethrough user-configurable logic.4Overvoltage and Undervoltage ProtectionLong lines under lightly loaded or no-loadconditions may experience voltages exceedingrated per unit voltage level of the line. Use thethree-phase overvoltage elements of the L90 toinitiate a local trip as well as a remote trip usingDirect Transfer Tripping DTT.GEDigitalEnergy.comCommunication Aided (Pilot) SchemesL90 supports different teleprotection functionsfor fast fault clearance for any faults within theprotected line. The following types of pilot-aidedschemes are available in the L90: Direct Underreach Transfer Trip (DUTT) Permissive Underreach Transfer Trip forDistance and Current (PUTT) Two Permissive Overreach Transfer Trip (POTT) Hybrid Permissive Overreach Transfer Trip(HYB POTT), permissive echo and transientblocking logic incorporated Directional Comparison Blocking Scheme (DCB) Directional Comparison Unblocking Scheme(DCUB) Customizable version of the POTT and DCBschemes (POTT1 and DCB1)AutoreclosingThe L90 provides multi-shot autoreclosing (upto 4 shots) for single or three-pole autorecloseon all types of faults with independent settingsfor each shot. Any of the autoreclose elementscan be dynamically blocked or unblocked byother elements or user logic. This way they canbe coordinated with the L90 protection settinggroups. Four different autoreclose operationmodes are available, enabling users to select theautoreclosing mode to suit specific applications.Synchronism CheckThe L90 provides four synchrocheck elementsthat monitor voltage difference, phase angledifference and slip frequency, to ensure properbreaker closure as per user requirements. Anyof the four synchrocheck elements can bedynamically blocked or unblocked by otherelements or user logic. The L90 also providesadditional enhancements in synchronizing byallowing synchrocheck verification betweenlocal and remote line terminal voltages.
