NHTIAlumni NewsSPRING 2009Something to Last BeyondDuene Cowan, ’77, probably neverimagined that more than 30 yearsafter he graduated from NHTI,he would see a building of his own designgo up on campus, the new Beverly D.Grappone Hall. Duene is the principalarchitect for the building and he hasowned his Concord-based company, DCDesigns Architects PLLC, for 20 years. After graduating with a degree inArchitectural Engineering Technology,Duene completed his bachelor’s degreeat Roger Williams College in RhodeIsland. He then worked for a couple offirms in NH, gaining valuable on-the-jobexperience. In 1983, Duene earned hismaster’s degree from Syracuse University’sGraduate School of Design.“I just drove to Syracuse and back oneday, never imagining that I could actuallyget into the program,” Duene says. “ButI met with a professor who offered me agraduate teaching position, based on myeducation and work experiences. Betweenthat and student loans, I was able to makeit work.”He founded DC Designs ArchitectsPLLC in 1989, earning many awards alongthe way, including two for the ConcordClock Tower on Main Street: the NHGovernor’s Citation for Excellence inDesign and the NH AIA Honor Award forExcellence in Architecture.Inside this issue . . .Paging Your Classmates . 2Calling All Nurses . 2John McAuley, ’82 . 3Alumni Updates . 4The Capacity to Feel Good . 8Duene Cowanand his awardwinning Concorof the design and Clock Tower.d constructionDuene, his twoteam who workplaced into thechildren, and med on the clockexcavated founanysigned a handdation. Duene firmly believes in qualityover quantity.Although many architectural firmsspecialize in one particular area such ascommercial development, DC Designsworks within a broader framework.Duene’s firm has handled retail, commercial, industrial, health care andeven residential work in its long history. He has consciously and carefully kepthis firm small, with just three full-timeemployees. “I want to be an architect, notthe owner and manager of a big company,”Duene says. “My satisfaction comes frombeing able to see something in my mindthat no one else can and eventually seeingthat vision come to life. Knowing that I’vedesigned something that will last beyondme is so rewarding.”Duene once designed an undergroundfiring range for a married couple who wereexpert marksmen. “That’s not somethinga lot of architects can say!” he says with achuckle. “The biggest challenge in owningyour own architectural firm is keepingyour interest level high. If you lose interest,it’s going to show in your work.”Typically, DC Designs has anywherefrom 10 to 15 major projects happeningat any given time. With recent economicconditions, Duene’s firm is handling abouteight architectural projects now, includingthe NHTI building, which will housean expanded, state-of-the-art nursingBack on CampusNow more than 30 years later, Dueneis spending a lot of time on the NHTIcampus.“The new building is also fairly uniquein that the team that’s putting it together istruly an NHTI group,” he says. “To have somany NHTI graduates back on campus towork together to get this building done, it’spretty rare.”Continued page 2

He says, “I teach the Scoutsabout making your own luck, planting theseeds for success by getting an education, and finding your own opportunities. AllI needed was that one chance and NHTIgave it to me.”Paging Your Classmates:Please Report to NHTI’sAlumni OfficeThe friendships you developduring your college years can lasta lifetime . if you know whereyour friends are!We are looking for the followingNHTI graduates. Meeting the Needs ofPatients and NursesAt the end of his first semester atNHTI, John McAuley, ’82 foundhimself on academic suspension.John says that the Electronic EngineeringTechnology program, “was not easy. I fellbehind the curve and in with the wrongcrowd. Meanwhile, my brother was doingvery well over at UNH. It wasn’t a goodtime.”Fast forwardnnearly 30 years. Johnis the founder (alongwwith his wife, Heidi),oowner and presidentoof McAuley Medical,IInc., a Concord-basedbbusiness that providessafe patient handling products to hospitalsand other medical offices. What exactly issafe patient handling?“OSHA (the federal agency chargedwith the enforcement of safety and healthlegislation) would never expect a personto lift a 100 lb. box,” John explains. “UPS,for example, would probably never askan employee to do that. But nurses inhospitals are expected to do it all the time, moving patients from a gurney to a bedor repositioning them in bed. And a goodnumber of patients weigh more than 100lbs.”Rolling or Sliding but No Lifting“Did you know that nurses have thehighest back injury rate of any profession?Even more than construction workers,”says John.In comes McAuley Medical, whichoffers Lateral Transfer Systems with twomain products that allow for movingpatients from one surface to anotherwithout lifting. With the SamaritRollboard, one nurse is able to literallyroll the patient across a soft foam coreboard, with no noise or static. The patientexperiences a soft ride as opposed to thejolts of being lifted and then lowered. Theperk for the nurse: no lifting and lowering.“More than 150,000 Rollboards havebeen sold in Europe,” John explains. “It’srevolutionizing safe patient handlingthere and I expect the US will catch upsoon. With nurses having fewer backinjuries, the hospitals save on both workerscompensation and insurance. The nurses3are happy because they can do their jobswithout risk of injury or pain.”The second product is the Air Slide, another lateral transfer system offeringthe patient the comfort of an air mattress. The Air Slide stays with the patient for theduration of his hospital visit, even throughX-rays and MRIs. There is no stitchingor air holes so the Air Slide offers muchgreater infection control.Having started their company inOctober 2007, John and Heidi have seentheir business grow very rapidly. Johnsays, “Our company has added five newjobs to the local economy in the last yearand a half.”John McAuleyand colleagueswork with theSlide at NHTI’sAirNursing Simulation Lab.From Here to ThereHow does one go from academicsuspension to being a successfulbusiness owner? John says it took theencouragement of his professors, especiallyProfessor Cheney, and a lot of hard work. After that first semester, he buckleddown and after taking a few night andsummer courses, he was re-admitted tothe program. Upon graduating in ‘82,he immediately went onto UNH for hisbachelor’s degree. With four substantialjob offers, John decided on Sanders/Lockheed in Nashua where he worked forseven years.“The practical, hands-on training Ireceived at the Tech went a long way inhelping me get those job offers,” he says.“For me, NHTI was the best place for meto get acclimated to college life.”John and Heidi have been married for24 years. They enjoy long rides on theirHarley Davidson motorcycles and are avidgolfers. They also have a home in Florida,“if ” they ever decide to retire. Continued from page 8accepted by U Mass Lowell, but electedto continue his education at DigiPenInstitute of Technology, describedby AGGP Professor Terry Simkin as“the world’s most outstanding gamedevelopment school.” Located inRedmond, Washington – near theMicrosoft and Nintendo campuses –DigiPen accepts around 250 studentsper year out of approximately 15,000applications, so Chris is now clearlyamong the elite. (The school also has a75% attrition rate, so he knows he can’trest on his laurels!)“I’m quite certain I wouldn’t be herewithout having first attended NHTI,”Chris writes. “Even if I had been ableto make it here without first attendingNHTI, I would not have been ready forit. When I first started attending NHTI,I still had high school homework habits(i.e. typically doing it the night beforeit’s due). So NHTI really helped soberme up to college-level work, focus andtime management before starting here. And this school is intense enough toreally require that. Many of the studentshere straight out of high school are stillspending more time playing gamesand hanging out than working, and it’sgoing to catch up to them with someharshness in the next few semesters.“Additionally, I have a far strongerbase in programming than I wouldhave otherwise, primarily thanks to theclasses taught by Professors Simkin andYusuf.”“The education here is absolutelyamazing,” he goes on. “I’m thoroughlyimpressed by every teacher I have thisyear and their range of experience,as well as their level of fluency intheir chosen disciplines. Even in thebase programming class [which] issomething I already know 98% of,there’s still plenty to learn just fromobserving the instructors and the waythey go about things.”So there you have it: a dream cometrue. A serious guy at a serious school, having the time of his life makinggames. “I have no doubt now that this isexactly where I should be at this point,”Chris writes. How many of us can makethat claim?NHTI AlAlumnii NNews, SpringS i 2009
