Transfer Credit at RRC At RRC, Transfer Credit is one type ofRecognition of Prior Learning process Involves the assessment of educational documents Transfer credit coordination is in theRegistrar’s Office Transfer Credit Officer position wascreated in 2010 to support largerinitiatives around student mobility3

Transfer Credit Coordination Maintain a centralized transfer credit systemthat: Provides a clear starting point for students and Provides a clear process overall for everyone involved Document common transfer creditequivalencies Develop a database of these equivalencies andeventually create a public facing database5

Public Facing DatabaseDatabase example: University of Manitoba, BrandonUniversity, as well as BC (BCCAT) and AB (ACAT) provincialare other examples. p trans eq main6

Equivalencies What are they? Approved transfer equivalencies that anystudent can receive who has completedthe same external course(s) from the sameexternal institution within the requiredtime frame and with the required grade Important to capture decisions about thesestraightforward equivalencies since theyare opportunities for all students7

Equivalencies We have been collecting decisions onequivalencies where possible. Ex. Largeprograms that have many standardexternal equivalencies: BA and Nursing Working to align information collectedwith Colleague to use Colleague’scapabilities for recording equivalencies Colleague can record 1-1, 2-1, Many-1,Many-Many equivalencies8

Other Equivalencies Internal equivalency and transfer creditare other ways students can have priorlearning recognized. The way we recordthese in Colleague on the student recordmay look different than externalequivalencies Credit award via RPL or a combination oftransfer credit and RPL is also recordeddifferently9

Who is Involved? Registrar’s Office Academic Department Student Student Service Centre RPL Facilitator and RPL Advisor Continuing Education for part-timeprograms12

Registrar’s Office Transfer Credit Officer Maintains database of standard external equivalencies Does initial review of transfer credit requests Verifies requirements (official documents, currency andgrade, recognized institution) Forwards curriculum to program area for review Can award credit based on standard equivalencies list Communicates final decision to studentsStudent Records Officer Keeps completed request forms on student file Adds transfer credits to student record13

Academic Departments Provides subject matter experts forassessment of new transfer credit requests Provides decisions on transfer creditequivalencies Advises students regarding alternativecourse selection and scheduling andprogram requirements14

Student Can request transfer of credit once they havebeen accepted to their program and havepaid their seat deposit Submits transfer credit requests and pays anyapplicable fees before the transfer creditassessment begins Is responsible for providing appropriatedocumentation for the assessment to be done15

Student Service Centre Provides transfer credit request forms andgeneral information about Transfer Creditprocesses Receives transfer credit fee payments Receives and forwards Transfer Creditrequests to Transfer Credit Officer in theRegistrar’s Office16

RPL Facilitator andRPL Advisor RPL Facilitator: Provides tools andresources to aide in the assessment offormal learning for transfer credit RPL Advisor: Advises students on issuesrelated to transfer credit and RPL17
