NHTIAlumni NewsFall 2011Safe at HomeSNHTI Alum at Hub of NH Homeland Securityurveying the work stations,computers, giant monitors and otherapparatus that adorn the state-ofthe-art Incident Planning and OperationsCenter, Chris Pope reflects on what itreally takes to fend off the multifariousthreats to his fellow citizens’ safety.“It takes a lot of people with a lotof experience, expertise and skills—andcommitment,” says the 1979 graduate ofthe NHTI Paramedic Program. “Fromvolunteers to first responders to theGovernor, New Hampshire is blessedwith people who are deeply dedicatedand passionate about coming to the aid oftheir friends, family and neighbors whencatastrophe strikes.”As the Director of NH HomelandSecurity and Emergency Management(HSEM), Chris works at the epicenterwhen bad news hits the proverbial fan.Whether natural disasters like the 2005Alstead floods or tumultuous 2010tornado, or fortifying against manmadedisasters such as a nuclear accident orbioterrorism, Chris oversees a complexnetwork of local, county, and stateresources, integrating them delicately withassistance from the feds, contractors andvolunteer efforts.Inside this issue . . .Teaching to Potential.Alumni Updates.Friendly Kitchen Road RaceCFDC 10th Anniversary .Lisa Ranfos, ECE ’99.Joan Hubbard, Nursing ’07.Winter Fling 2012.2336677Chris Pope, ‘79, in the NH Incident Planning and Operations Center.“It’s a lot of moving parts,” he says. “Butit’s a challenge and very personally satisfying,not only to see the results, but to work withpeople at all levels coming together to make adifference in people’s lives.”Appointed Director of HSEM (thestate-level equivalent of the FederalEmergency Management Agency) byGovernor John Lynch in 2006, Chrislearned his trade from the ground up.He started as a firefighter and paramedic,working his way up to Chief of theConcord Fire Dept. where he managed 117employees and a dispatch center responsiblefor 20,000 emergency calls each year, andled the development of the EmergencyManagement Master Plan for Concord.Chris graduated from St. Paul’sSchool in Concord and attended BucknellUniversity, before recognizing his passionfor firefighting and emergency medicalservices. After completing the Statefirefighter recruit academy, he entered the3rd paramedic class at NHTI in 1978.After graduating NHTI andcompleting his National RegistryParamedic certification, Chris earnedhis B.S. in Public Safety Administrationat Granite State College and an M.A. inSecurity Studies (Homeland Defense andSecurity) at the U.S. Naval PostgraduateSchool in Monterey, Calif. in 2006.Then, he focused specialized trainingand education to prepare him for hiscurrent gig. With a diverse educationalbackground at outstanding institutions,Chris looks back at NHTI as having set asolid foundation.“It was at NHTI, as a young adult,that I first truly understood I coulddirectly apply what I was learning in theclassroom to an actual work experience,”Chris recalls. “And it was at NHTI wherelearning became fun.”

But with the birthof his son, the prospect of working 60 to80 hours per week at the restaurant was asacrifice he wasn’t willing to make.“I made a conscious decision that Iwould rather work 40 hours a week and beguaranteed to see my family,” Joe explains.2In his current role at the DupontSchool, Joe is part of a leadership teamwith the Principal, Lynn Allen, and theDirector of Special Education, AnthonyBlinn. The team has a “kids first” focusthat pervades the culture of the schools.Meanwhile, Joe and his wife of 12years, Allyson, are busy helping theirown three children (Zach, 11, Emma, 8and Molly, 2) reach their own potential.Allyson works as a consultant for theNH Department of Education. Joe says,“Allyson is the smart one in the family.She’s been an educator for longer than me,and really, she makes it all work.”“When I talk to kids about college,”Joe adds, “I often encourage them to checkout NHTI to begin their college career. Dr.Hickey has dedicated his 35 years ofnursing experience to creating positiveexperiences for patients and theirfamilies as he has advocated for safe,efficient, and quality nursing care.In his spare time Dr. Hickey is anavid adventurer who enjoys camping,hiking, and travel. On May 24, 2007Dr. Hickey completed the 7 Summits ofthe World (highest mountain on eachof the 7 continents) when he stood atopMt. Everest. Dr. Hickey is the authorof Seven Summits: A Nurse’s Quest toConquer Mountaineering and Life.In April 2011, Dr. Hickey copresented the keynote presentation“Defy Gravity: From Mountain Summitsto Wicked Realities” at the NationalStudent Nurses Association conferencein Salt Lake City, UT. Alumni Updates 1968Dan Clevelandserved in the military, worked abroad for MichelinTire Corporation and is now retired. He lives inSimpsonville, South Carolina, and started his owncompany this year. He travels, writes a blog andphotography is his passion.1977Deborah Sampsongraduated from the Nursing program. Deborahhas taken a faculty position at Boston CollegeConnell School of Nursing. She will teachin the family nurse practitioner program andresearch historical perspectives on race, classand gender in nursing practice and patient carepolicy. Deborah’s prior position was as a SeniorAdvisor at the US Health Resources ServicesAdministration (HRSA of the US Department ofHealth and Human Services), and she was on thefaculty of University of Michigan. Deborah hasbeen named a Fellow of the American Academyof Nurse Practitioners and received the 2010NH Nurse Advocacy Award. “This has been awonderful and exciting career journey that beganat NHTI.”1979William Martlinggraduated with a degree in ManufacturingEngineering Technology and ArchitecturalEngineering Technology. William got married onDecember 26, 2010 to Susan Hardy in Brewster,Massachusetts and will be residing in Cotuit.Connie Robillardearned her Master’s degree from Rivier College,Nashua, NH in 1991. Connie is co-publishing afourth book with Marcel A. Duclos, M.Ed., M.Th.,former Mental Health Department Head of NHTI.Connie and Marcel have specialized in InternalFamily Systems Therapy. Connie is in privatepractice in Londonderry, NH, and Marcel is anAgency Department Head at The Northern FamilyHelp Center in Flagstaff, Arizona.Connie and Marcel have developed aneducational program on the treatment oftrauma, In the Safe Place Seminars, with whichthey have conducted workshops in the UnitedStates and abroad. They have co-authored,Common Threads: Stories of Life After Trauma; adocumentary by the same title, with film producerAmber Ward; and A Doorway in the Desert, withphotographer Ernie Gault of Gilford, NH (husbandof NHTI graduate Edie Gault). Connie’s andMarcel’s new books, Necessary Illusions, Jottingsby a Man & Woman and Cultivating Hope WithAbuse Survivors will be available October 2011.1980Stephen Cartergraduated with a Paramedic degree, and is aFire Chief / Emergency Management Director forthe Littleton Fire Department. Stephen has beenmarried to Susan since 1985 and has two grown3sons. Stephen says of his education at NHTI,“We were a very early class but it proved to beone of the highest quality programs I’ve comeacross in 30 years now!”1981John Sawyergraduated with an Electronic Engineering degree.John furthered his education at MerrimackCollege and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in 1996.He is employed at Varian Semiconductor andis a Principal Software Engineer. He designsand develops control systems software for ionimplanters. He is married to Linda and they have2 grown children.1984Gail (Desrochers) Bartzearned an Information Technology degree. Gailjust got back from a spectacular vacation cruiseof the inside passage in beautiful Alaska. “It wasa triple celebration vacation: my 25th weddinganniversary to Roy, daughter Kristina graduatedfrom Syracuse University in May with a dualmajor in Math and Economics, and Nicholasgraduated from high school. Glacier Bay NationalPark should be on everyone’s ‘bucket list’.”Helen Nortonis a graduate of the first Registered NursingProgram. Helen is interested in having a classreunion. She resides in Concord.1986Cindy Watsongraduated with a degree in Nursing. Cindy isa second shift nurse for the New HampshireVeteran’s Home in Tilton. She has two grownchildren, Stephanie and Erin.1988Dan Cartiertook advantage of the 2 2 program andtransferred his credits to the UNH Collegeof Engineering and Physical Sciences. Danattended night school for several years andgraduated from University CEPS with aBachelor’s in Electronic Technology in 2004. Hehas been employed by Goss International inDurham, NH for 16 years and currently holds theposition of Controls Design Engineer, designingand developing commercial and newspaperprinting press control systems.Dan owns his own business, Cartier Consulting,LLC, which offers computer, networking, webdesign services and more. He was marriedin 2009 and has a son Elijah and resides inFarmington, NH. Dan is an avid golfer, isinvolved in coaching youth baseball, and hopes tocoach youth football in the fall.1989Brenda Bowersoxhas a degree in Accounting. She works for Mt.View Nursing Home as a Dietary Aide. Brendawill be going back to college to get her Bachelor’sDegree in Business Management.1990Jean Fiskeearned her Nursing degree in 1990. Jean is theowner/administrator of TLC Medical Day Carefor Adults, Inc. specializing in Alzheimer’s andDementia. Jean has one grown son.1992Michael Bradygraduated with a Nursing degree. He went on toattend Kaplan University and graduated SummaCum Laude for his BS degree and is now in aMaster’s Program. He works for the State ofCalifornia as a Director of Nurses for an AdultMale Correctional Facility. “One of my mostenjoyable educational experiences was at NHTI.”1993Abrahm Howelives in Westmoreland, NH.1997Eva Hollisis a graduate of the Nursing program. She is aRegistered Nurse and does health coaching onthe phone with people to try to get preventativemeasures done, doing symptom checks, andhelping them find ways to stay out of the hospitalonce they are home. Eva has two grown childrenand three grandchildren.1998Maureen Dittmargraduated with an associate’s degree in CriminalJustice; she furthered her education at DanielWebster University and earned her Bachelor’sdegree. Maureen is employed by SecuritasSecurity as Senior Director of Security. She isresponsible for Harvard University’s securityprogram with approximately 355 security officersand reporting to the police department. Maureenhas four children, Michael, Shane, Crystal andFaith.Maureen says of her education at NHTI: “Theexperience I had with NHTI and experiencedprofessors in the Criminal Justice field as wellas my work with NHTI Security helped meunderstand my role in a campus environment tobe able to serve them better.”1999Samantha (Bartis) Malaygraduated with a Nursing degree in 1999 andresides in Manchester, NH.2001Arbab Khan, MDwas awarded a Diagnostic Medical Sonographydiploma (with High Honors) on December of2001. Arbab went on to do his DiagnosticRadiology residency and passed the boards andhe is now on the American Board of Radiology asa certified Radiologist.2002Thomas Gullageearned his degree in Nursing. Thomasis married to Kathryn and they have two children.Melanie Yergeauhas a Liberal Arts degree. Melanie earned aPh.D. in English at Ohio State University, andaccepted a tenure track position as an AssistantProfessor of English at the University of Michiganthis fall.2003Justin Woodsgraduated with an associate’s degree in BusinessAdministration; he earned a Masters in Divinityat Liberty Seminary College and is an OrdainedMinister/Chaplin in the Army. Justin is workingfor National Agents Alliance in Burlington, NorthCarolina.Justin says of his education at NHTI: “Greatexperience due to the experience of the staff.”2004Jessica Huntleyearned an Early Childhood Education degree.Jessica has been going to Empire State Collegeand will be receiving her degree in 2012. Jessicais a Lead Teacher in the Toddler classroom atBrockport Child Development Center.2007Crystal Burchgraduated with a degree in Human Services.Crystal went on to New England College to gether Mental Health Counseling Masters of Sciencedegree. She will be walking in May of 2011 andreceiving her actual degree in September 2011.Crystal is interning at Spaulding Youth Center asa Clinician. She has one son, Daniel John Burch,who is two.Shilo Lavenskie-Stoneymarried William Stoney in August 2010 and spent10 days in the Caymen Islands. She recentlybegan working at Concord Hospital.Her daughter was accepted at Saint AnselmCollege last fall and is following in her footstepsas a Nursing major. Her son Evan, with whomshe was pregnant while attending NHTI, hascompleted Kindergarten and is “simply amazing!”She now also has a step-son. “Thank you, NHTI,for the opportunity to grow along with my family!”2008Ryan A. Kanewas recently appointed as a full-time police officerin Seabrook. Ryan was a full-time officer in NorthHampton, with an Associate’s degree in criminaljustice from NHTI. He is also certified by theNew Hampshire Police Standards and TrainingCouncil.John Masonearned a degree in Accounting and worksNHTI Alumni Newsletter, Fall 2011for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as anAccountant in Boston.2009Tyler LaRocheEarned a degree in Business, and this spring hewill be graduating from UNH Manchester witha Bachelor’s in Business and Finance. “NHTIdefinitely had an impact on my college career andhelped me graduate with a Bachelor’s degree.” Engagements Allard – MariniNichole Allard and Robert Marini are gettingmarried. Nichole graduated from Memorial HighSchool and from NHTI. Robert graduated fromPinkerton Academy and from New HampshireFire Academy in Concord, NH. Nicole is anemergency room nurse with Elliot Hospital,and Robert is a mechanic with Firestone inManchester and a volunteer firefighter with theAuburn Fire Department. A July wedding isplanned.Barrett - YoungMichelle Barrett and Scott Young of StephensCity, Virginia have announced their engagement.Michelle attended Plymouth State College forBusiness Management and NHTI for Accounting;she is an insurance specialist and does medicalbilling/coding. Scott attended West ValleyCommunity College and Howard CommunityCollege for Electronics; he is a journeymanelectrician for IBEW Local 24 in Baltimore. ASeptember wedding is planned.Bragdon ’09-PrestiKatherine Bragdon andMatthew Presti areengaged. Katherinegraduated NHTI withhigh honors and adegree in DentalHygiene. She is a frontoffice and marketingBragdon - Presticoordinator withAesthetic Designs of Cherry Creek in Denver.Matthew earned a degree at Southern NewHampshire University in Business Administrationwith a concentration in Sports Management. Heis a physician recruiter with Medicus in Denver. AMay 27 wedding is planned.Hutchins - ReillyLisa Hutchins and Christopher Reilly haveannounced their engagement. Lisa graduatedfrom Plymouth High School and the Universityof New Hampshire. She is a floral designer atthe Blossom Shop in Franklin, an EMT in the calldepartment for the Franklin Fire Department,and a call department dispatcher for LakesRegion Mutual Fire Aid in Laconia. Christophergraduated from Merrimack Valley High Schooland NHTI. He is a manager at Sears.Eaton - DuboisJennifer Eaton is engaged to Michael Dubois.Jennifer is a licensed nurse’s assistant with theVisiting Nurses Association of Manchester, in thehospice department, and is attending NHTI tobe a registered nurse. Michael is the assistantmanager with Johnny Troy’s Italian Restaurant inManchester. An August wedding is planned.Maranda - MavrogeorgeMelissa Maranda is engaged to MatthewMavrogeorge. Melissa graduated from NHTIand is a registered Radiologic Technologist withExeter Hospital and Parkland Medical Center.Matthew graduated from the University of NewHampshire and Franklin Pierce Law Center.He is an Assistant Attorney General at the NewHampshire Department of Justice.McLaughlin – Sinisgallo ’01Alison McLaughlinand Jim Sinisgallohave announcedtheir engagement.Alison graduated fromMerrimack Valley HighSchool and DrewUniversity; she isemployed by the City ofConcord. Jim graduatedMcLaughlin from NHTI and SouthernSinisgalloNew HampshireUniversity, and works for St. Pauls School. Sinisgallo ’08 - MageeMichelle Sinisgallo and Todd Magee haveannounced their engagement. Michelleearned an associate’s degree in the Paralegalprogram and is currently seeking employment.Todd earned an associate’s degree in medicalassistance from Hesser College in 2007 and is acertified medical assistant with Concord Hospital.A July 2012 wedding is planned.Weden ’05 – BaileyAmanda Weden andMichael Bailey ofSpringvale, Mainehave announced theirengagement. Amanda ofPlymouth, NH graduatedfrom Plymouth RegionalHigh School in 2003 andNHTI in 2005. MichaelWeden – Baileygraduated from PittsfieldHigh School in 1996 and Fitchburg State Collegein 2001. A December wedding is planned Weddings Neff - AnzaloneChristine Neff and Joseph Anzalone III, both ofNottingham, were married at Stonehurst Manorin North Conway. Christine graduated from theUniversity of New Hampshire in Durham andNHTI. She is a second-year medical studentat the University of New England College ofOsteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine.Joseph attended Northern Essex CommunityCollege and Middlesex Community College andis a sonographer with Exeter Hospital.4

In Memory Donna Louise Beauchemenpassed on April 8, 2011. Donna receivedan Associate’s Degree in Animal Sciencefrom Holliston Junior College in HollistonMassachusetts in 1978. She also graduatedfrom NHTI in 1983 with an Associate’s Degreein Dental Hygiene and the New England Schoolof Acupuncture in 2000 with a Master’s ofAcupuncture Degree. Donna’s friends werecontinually amazed by her many talents. In1974 she studied event jumping and dressageat Porlock Vale Riding School in Somerset,England, one of the most influential riding schoolsin England. Donna loved to share her joy ofriding her beloved horse, Bravo, and her devotionto all of God’s creatures. Throughout her life, sherescued many cats, dogs, birds and guinea pigs,giving them a safe and loving home. Donna hada way of rescuing people whether it was throughthe healing of acupuncture or by finding a hiddentreasure and sharing it to help ease the saddestof times. Donna gave freely of herself to help anyfriend in need and opened her heart and homewithout question or judgment.Steve Nkuli Ituome23, of the Democratic Republic of the Congo,died May 21, 2011 from injuries suffered in anautomobile accident.Andrea Murrayof New Durham passed on May 24, 2011.Andrea worked at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro,since 1989. She had a passion for nursing andstarted her career as a certified nurse’s aide.While working at Huggins Hospital she continuedher dream and attended NHTI where she earnedher registered nursing degree. Andrea wasemployed for several years in the post-anesthesiacare unit and surgical department. She hada wonderful bedside manner and a true lovefor nursing, and was a member of the NursesService Organization.Sgt. Bryan R. Sheehan, USMCBryan passed on March 6, in San Diego,California while on active duty in the UnitedStates Marine Corps. Sgt. Sheehan graduatedfrom Raymond High School in 2004, and earnedan associate’s degree in Criminal Justice fromNHTI in 2006. To further pursue his dream ofbecoming a member of the NH State Police, heenlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Mayof 2006 for a five year active tour of duty, servingas an aviation electronics technician on a CH-53Super Stallion helicopter. He served two toursof duty, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2008,and participating in the Pakistan relief effort in2010. Bryan was an avid Boston Bruins fan andalso followed the Red Sox. He loved spendingtime with his friends and family. Bryan proudlyserved his country as a United States Marine andwas held in high esteem by all those who servedwith him.Constance Stevenson ’77Constance spent most of her childhood with hermaternal grandparents, Harvey and Violet Allen,of Mexico, Maine. She graduated from Mexico5High School in 1946 and was a clarinetist in theconcert band. In 1977, Constance graduatedfrom NHTI with a degree in Counseling. Earlyin her career, she was employed by WKXL inConcord, where she performed as salespersonand host of the weekly “Connie Stevenson Show,”only the second woman in New Hampshire tohave a live talk show format. Constance washostess for International House of Pancakes inManchester for several years and went on to be aleader in Alcoholics Anonymous, instrumental inestablishing many new units throughout NH.Constance was a self-taught graphic artistknown for her primitive painting, tole work andlampshade design. She was the owner/artistof The Village Lamp & Shade Shop in Altonand distributed works throughout Nova Scotia,Canada, Maine and NH. Connie and herhusband, Bob, established “Stevenson’s DairyBar” in Alton which served the area for severalyears. After receiving her degree in counseling,Mrs. Stevenson went on to work for NH StateHospital, Burbank House, Amethyst as an alcoholabuse counselor, Manchester Mental Healthand Carroll County Impaired Driver InterventionProgram until her retirement in 1987. Since1987, Connie divided her time between hersummer home in Canada and Alton, where shecontinued to paint.5th Annual FriendlyKitchen 5K Road RaceDon’t miss the 5th AnnualFriendly Kitchen 5K Road Raceand Fitness Walk! This funevent will be held on Friday September9 at 5:30 pm.The 5K race, which includes analumni division, will be run on a fast,flat course that will incorporate thebeautiful Seekamp Trail. The fitnesswalk will be 2.5 K long. There will alsobe a children’s fun run after the 5K race.A giant raffle and awards ceremony willtake place immediately after the race.The Friendly Kitchen really needsour help this year because of the firelast April at their facility. Wyman44, of South Philadelphia, an architect witha passion for historic preservation and hisadopted city, died of a rare form of lymphomaon Thursday, April 14. Mr. Wyman earned anAssociate’s degree in architectural engineeringfrom NHTIand abachelor’sdegree inarchitecturefrom theBostonArchitecturalCenter inNicholas Wyman1994.Mr. Wyman first arrived in Philadelphia in 1995as an architect for the National Park Service atIndependence National Historical Park. Amonghis projects there were repairing the tower ofIndependence Hall, documenting the interior ofthe Merchants’ Exchange, and assessing thecondition of the facade of the Second Bank ofthe United States. He received achievementawards from the National Park Service and acommendation certificate from Mayor Ed Rendellfor his volunteer design of a cabaret room for aCity Hall gala in 1997.For the last 10 years, he was an architect for theNortheast Regional Office of the Federal Bureauof Prisons, with an office in Old City. One projecthe was especially proud of was the preservationof the Italianate chimney at the federalpenitentiary in Lewisburg, PA. CFDC Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary!Ten years ago, the Child and Family Development Center, or CFDC as it is morecommonly known, opened for business on the NHTI campus. CFDC’s missionand purpose is two-fold. As a day care center, it offers high-quality care toyoung children and their families. As a lab school, the CFDC provides practical, on-sitelearning experience for Early Childhood Education students at NHTI.Some of the 10 year accomplishments of the CFDC include: Scholarships offered to Early Childhood Education students, in Fall and Spring(2011) Collaborating with Concord SchoolDistrict and Preschool specialeducation to provide a quality childcareenvironment in which they can receiveservices (2011) NHTI students begin working withCFDC for weekly lab education (2009) Educational workshops offered tocommunity (2009) Enrollment at capacity with a significant wait list based on reputation of thequality of care that is offered to children and families (2006) Increase of staff qualifications to meet the NAEYC standards, thereby affectingthe quality of care giving that is given to each child (2006) National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)Accreditation (2005) Natural Playground environment (2005) Educational workshops offered to families (2003)Donate to the CFDCLisa Ranfos, the Director of the Child and Family Development Center atNHTI, along with the CFDC Parent Advisory Council, is leading a fundraisingcampaign in celebration of the Center’s 10th Anniversary.
