The DESIRE Project:Desertification Mitigation and Remediation of Land a global approach for local solutionsViolette Geissen and Coen RitsemaOn behalf of the DESIRE consortiumEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE backgroundDESIRE is an Integrated Project funded by EU (FP6),executed between 2007-2012 (Contract no. 037046)The DESIRE consortium consisted of 26 partners fromaround the world with different backgrounds, expertise andstudy sitesTotal project budget was 9 million Euro, of which around7 million from the EU and the remainder part from differentnational governmentsEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE objectivesMain aims were:1. To develop and test promising land use and management strategies toprevent and remediate desertification and land degradation in 18 hotspotareas around the world in close cooperation with local stakeholders, and2. To disseminate results to different fora, amongst others using a webbased harmonized information systemEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE approachDifferent sites, different problemsEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE approachDESIRE was built among six Working BlocksWB1Mapping the stateof degradation/desertificationWB2Mapping the risk ofdegradation/desertificationWB4Testing strategiesWB6Disseminating project resultsWB3Selecting promisingprevention andremediationstrategiesWB5Regionalassessment ofstrategiesEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE WB1WB1 consisted of mapping all study sites regarding the state of degradation/ desertification and conservation using an updated and improved LADAWOCAT mapping procedure(Source:EU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE WB2WB2 related to the development of an extended indicator-based analysis toolproviding maps of desertification risk for each study siteEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE WB3WB3 dealt with the development and application of aparticipatory planning process to identify, documentand prioritize soil and water conservation strategieswith stakeholders using the WOCAT methodology(Source: Gudrun Schwilch)EU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE WB4WB4 related to execution of field trials to test and evaluate the biophysicaland socio-economic effects of prevention and remediation measuresselected by the stakeholders in the study sitesApril 2009April 2011EU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE WB5WB5 aimed to couple a multi-scale biophysical model with a robust economicmodule to evaluate the efficacy of prevention and remediation measures on thewider spatial scale, including related costs/benefits for land users(Source: UL)EU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE WB6WB6 disseminated project results using a state-of-the-art web-based harmonizedinformation system providing information at different levels of complexity for awide range of stakeholders, ranging from land users to the international policyarenaEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE WB6At present, the DESIRE website has been visited by more than 3.6 millionusers out of 161 countries!Current map shows the visitors between March-May 2013EU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

DESIRE outputScientific results will be presented in around 30 PhD studies, 3 DESIRE specialissues in international scientific journals, numerous other papers, an updatedWOCAT database, and an overarching book presenting the DESIRE methodologyand options for sustainable land management in drylandsEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

The way forwardThe DESIRE methodology can also beapplied for combating other soil threats likethose mentioned in the EU Soil ThematicStrategy. For that purpose, a new projectinitiative called RECARE has been submittedto the EC by a consortium of 28 partnerinstitutions, which was favorably evaluatedrecently.RECARE aims to prevent and remediatedegradation of soils in Europe by designingand applying targeted land managementstrategies in close collaboration withstakeholders in 17 case study sites, includingproviding policy recommendations at the endEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013

The way forwardRECARE’s conceptual framework for assessing, preventing and remediating soildegradation in Europe is structured along the DPSIR approachRECARE aims at improving the understanding of soil system functioning inrelation to land use and management, and to achieve impact with regard topreserving the environment and benefiting the peopleEU meeting 10 and 11 June, 2013
