CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Finding Your Seed(s) of TrustOne of the tougher disruptions I’ve faced was losingtwo employees from my division in the middle of executingmultiple high-priority business initiatives. These individualschose to leave the company within weeks of one another. Itwas like one wave of tough news after the other. Combinedthey were responsible for more than a third of the work ofmy department. Their departure left a wake of action itemsthat I and those who remained in the division had to quicklyabsorb. Not only did I have to redistribute the work, takingon a significant amount of it myself, but I also had to beginsearching for the right people to backfill the now vacantpositions.I was overwhelmed. My days stretched longer and longeras I juggled all the work. I was unclear on how or even if mydivision was going to be able to keep everything on track. Butwe did. By using the tools and practices laid out in this book,in the short term we effectively absorbed the work, and in thelong term we found replacements who quickly onboardedand excelled in their respective positions. This experiencecreated a big seed of trust within me that no matter how direthe disruption appears, not only getting through it but growing through it is always possible. This exercise serves to help you document your own seedsof trust—trust that you will not only be able to get throughyour toughest changes, but also that they offer you the greatest opportunity to become better and stronger.Materials Required:1. A willingness to explore tough times2. A pen or pencil21

CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALDirections: Reflect on the deepest tragedy, disruption,or change challenge you’ve faced. This can be personal orprofessional. This can also be something you’re experiencing right now. As you reflect, capture what has come truebecause of that challenge: connections, roles/positions, or anew perspective. Use the chart below as a guide. I’ve takenthe liberty of populating it using my own example to getyour gears turning.Every response within columns two to four, if you allowthem, will serve as seeds of trust that even in your toughestand most challenging change or disruption experience, thereis something for your growth and betterment.Change EventNewConnectionsNew Role(s)/Position(s)New PerspectiveBriefly describe thechange event. What newconnection wasmade possible? What professionalrole or positionwas made possiblebecause I enduredthat event? What is one newperspective gained?I lost two keyemployeeswhile executingseveral highpriority businessinitiatives. The lossmeant short-termabsorption of theirwork by me and therest of the division, and the urgentwork of findingthe right people tobackfill the vacantpositions. The individualshired to backfill thevacant positionswere exceptional. They brought afresh, vibrantenergy to theentire department, doing work thatexcited andfulfilled them.Given theireffectiveness inabsorbing the extrawork, a couple ofmy employees’roles were slightlyexpanded, betterpositioningthem for thenext milestonein their careeradvancement. When a team iscohesive, engaged, and working towardthe same goal(s)they can deliver inunprecedented ways.22Though the recruitingprocess can beoptimized andstreamlined to reducethe time line from jobposting to job filling, itshould not be rushed.Rushing recruitmentinto key positionshas a high risk ofbringing detriment inthe long run, to boththe company and theindividual.

CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Acknowledging GrowthMaterials Required:1. A willingness to get to know yourself2. An open mind and heart3. A pen or pencilDirections: Reflect on the same challenge you used forthe first exercise in this chapter. Consider what you learnedabout yourself through that challenge. Use the questionsbelow as a guide. What made the challenge so difficult for me? What got me through that challenge (e.g., belief,person/relationship, activity)? What brought me joy during that time?23

CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL How was I most changed as a result of thatchallenge? What did I discover no longer served me becauseof that challenge? What and/or whom do I appreciate more becauseof making it through that challenge?24

CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Allowing Signal Emotions toLight Your Path of OpportunityMaterials Required:1. A list of close friends and/or mentors2. An open mind3. A pen or pencilDirections: Use the chart below to explore options totransform any signal emotions and associated thoughts youmay be experiencing at the moment. When we have embracedthat opportunity exists within a given change challenge, thisis the work needed to identify options that will maximize theopportunity.Once completed, I have found it beneficial to share thechart with a close friend or mentor who has your best interestat heart. Listen to what perspective or guidance they offerregarding the options you have created and invite them toshare new ones. Feel free to revisit the exercise in Chapter 4—“A Gift to Your Future Self”—as a refresher to thoseactivities that bring you joy. Knowing these can inform youroptions to begin transforming your emotional energy.Signal EmotionWhat ThoughtsAre Associated?ProductiveOption(s) RUSTRATION25

CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Taking a Daily Choice InventoryMaterials Required:1. Paper or whiteboard2. A pen or pencil3. A decent memoryDirections: For one week, at the end of every day list allthe choices you made throughout the day, no matter howlarge or small. This exercise is about simply taking inventory of your day-to-day choices. When possible, note howmuch time was devoted to each choice and any feelingsthat resulted. At the end of the week, review your list and group yourchoices by similarity, e.g., family, friends, health/nutrition,relaxation/enjoyment, self-care, money, purpose/passion,and professional relationship building. You can think ofthese buckets as your areas of focus. Take note of which buckets hold the most choices. Notice where you’re devoting themajority of your time and where you are you making consistent choices.Over the course of a week, you will be able to see whereyou are placing your priorities in life. In doing so, you willbe able to assess whether what is reflected back to you is inline with how you truly wish to show up in the world. Thisexercise can help you assess your feelings, whether there arecertain feelings that are more dominant in your days, andwhether the more dominant feelings are the ones you wishto be dominant. This was a transformative exercise for mebecause who I saw on paper was not who I wanted to be. I wasnot living the life I wanted. Through this exercise, I createdthe data to not only support that conclusion but also to betterunderstand where and how I wanted to shift focus.26

Inthe third column, list any feelings that resulted in you makingeach choice. There are key questions to ask yourself here: How did I feel immediately upon makingthat choice? How did I feel one week after makingthat choice? In the final column, capture the impact of the choice. Here are additional questions to consider: What did I learn about myself because ofthat choice? CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Defining the What and the WhySmooth change implementation becomes increasinglystrained when change executors are armed with less clarityof the change expected, the what, and less understanding ofwhat’s driving the change, the why. As change leaders, it isour responsibility to communicate clarity of the what andthe why to the best of our knowledge and ability. CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Intentional Self-ImprovementImagine that your organization must implement a newsoftware platform. In spite of establishing experts both insideand outside the company to lead the training on the newsystem, you find yourself fielding questions left and rightfrom individuals in your organization to which you have noanswers. The frustration that situation inspires could be signaling you to expand your knowledge and experience of thisparticular software platform.By intentionally searching for avenues to gain moreknowledge and experience in areas where we would like to orneed to grow, we become better able to support and influenceothers. Our areas of growth are limitless. We have the powerto create lifelong, ever-evolving learning plans to nurture ourcontinuous expansion. The exercise below provides you withthe opportunity to self-evaluate in this area and create a commitment to improve. CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Active Self-ImprovementThis exercise works in concert with the “Intentional SelfImprovement” exercise where you began practicing intentionally searching for ways to grow and expand your knowledgeand experience. This exercise provides accountability for taking regular action to grow. Complete the exercise below overthe next 30 days. If the activity from the “Self-Improvement”exercise identified several areas for growth, feel free to populate an activity of learning and growth every 30 days for thenext six months. CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Practicing Care for SelfFor the sake of this exercise set aside any preconceivednotions that may come to mind when you hear the term selfcare, like it’s just woo-woo jargon for people into yoga, chakras, healing crystals, and moon water. For this exercise, we arefocusing on the idea that the term upholds: caring for self. Thereis no one on this planet with whom you will spend more timeor rely on more heavily than yourself. How are you caring forthat self? How are you appreciating that self when it stays uplate during those restless nights before big presentations? Howare you nurturing the relationship with that self to avoid internal arguments or urges to beat that self up? How are you having fun with that self, soaking up the best life has to offer?Your relationship with yourself is too often neglected andput on the back burner when leading others through complexchange. Yet it is that same neglected self who you call uponconstantly to inspire and motivate your teams and organizations. When tensions are high and signal emotions are bubbling, this is the relationship you must prioritize in order tobe at your best in service and support of others. Whether yourrelationship-building looks like taking 5 minutes to sit quietly after breakfast, playing a round of golf, taking 10-minutebreaks throughout the workday to walk outside, listening toyour favorite podcast on the commute to work, or biking 10miles after work, it is imperative that you focus on it.The exercise below provides you with the opportunityto self-evaluate in this area and create a commitment toimprove. Be sure to capture an upcoming opportunity to acton the commitment(s) listed.42

CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Practicing VulnerabilityWhen your team members, direct reports, and peers arefeeling their signal emotions and experiencing challengesdealing with a change execution, allowing yourself to bevulnerable demonstrates that you understand where theymay be coming from, ultimately building trust and strengthening the relationship. If you are experiencing those samesignal emotions, revealing those feelings and leaning intovulnerability is also living your true self. Not only will yoube allowing that authentic self to shine, but you will also beinviting others into an opportunity for a moment of energetic resonance.I do recognize there’s concern that may be floating aroundin your mind right now: If I show vulnerability to my organization, I will be perceived as weak, not in control, and ineffective. Tothis I say, never mistake vulnerability for weakness. Allowingyourself to be confidently vulnerable with your organizationtakes more courage than hiding or shielding your emotionsbehind the guise of “I have all the answers; nothing evershakes me.” Understanding this is a delicate concept whenin the context of business and the workplace, let’s review anexample of how to confidently step into vulnerability whentalking with your team or a direct report. Applying this structure will help ensure your leadership integrity and authenticity is reinforced, not diminished.First: Acknowledge the emotions being felt across theorganization and/or by a specific individual. State plainly andsincerely that you are feeling them as well.Example: “I can sense the angst and frustration in the organization, and I’ll be honest, I’m feeling it too.”Next: Share a specific example of when you recentlyexperienced a similar emotion and how you dealt with it inthe moment.44

CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExample: “I’ve been through several major restructures in mycareer, but this one is by far the toughest. Just yesterday afternoonI was so frustrated after our planning team call, I had to take abreak to walk outside and clear my head.”Last: Restate again that you have had tough days. Relaythat you trust in the benefit of making the change happen, calling out a few specifics. Reinforce that you will get throughit together. Reinforce that you are there to support your teamor direct report every step of the way.Example: “But as tough as this is, I know the vision. I trustin the vision. Even though I have really tough days, I know oncewe get through this, we are going to be so much better because ofit. More streamlined. More agile. More rigorous. More capable ofhandling the demands of the business. And please know, no matterhow frustrated you may become, I’m here to support you every stepof the way.”Take note of the structure of this approach and make ityour own. The exercise below provides you with the opportunity to self-evaluate in this area and create a commitmentto improve.Skill-BuildingEvaluationSelfRating(1 – 5)Commitment toImproveTimingResultI allow myself tobe vulnerable tomy organizationduring complexchange.Self-Rating Scale: 1 Never 2 Rarely 3 Sometimes4 Often 5 Always45

CHANGE ENTHUSIASM AUDIOBOOK SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALExercise: Being Your Full SelfThis exercise is all about allowing the truest part of youto resonate in your work each and every day. With your styleperfectly tailored to maximize your impact on your organization, whether it’s on your team, peers, or senior leadership, share your viewpoints, ideas, thoughts, and energy to enablechange implementation success.Another opportunity to unleas
