FinneD tubinGAerofin manufactures finned tubing inmultiple sizes and materials with theflexibility to meet applications involvinghigh fluid flow rates and temperaturesexceeding 750 F. Materials includealuminum,copper,copper-nickel,carbon steel, stainless steel, inconel, duplex stainless or any other specialtymaterial suitable for the application.Tube thicknesses and diameters aredetermined using customer-specifieddesign requirements for pressure, temperature and service.Aerofin offers a variety of coil surfacesconsisting of both helically wound andplate style fins.HELICALLY WOUND FINS are smoothproviding low air side resistance with afin spacing range designed to optimizeefficiency. The helically wound fin designallows each tube to be individuallyfinned offering a distinct advantage incustomization. Individually finned tubesallow the coil to have the tube and rowcenters spread. This affords the flexibilityto design for low airside resistance andextreme air side fouling applicationsrequiring periodic cleaning.PLATE FINS are smooth or corrugated, offering higher efficiencies at a slightlyhigher air resistance in a fin spacingrange of 5 to 14 Fins Per Inch. Platefins are permanently attached to thetubes by expansion of each tube. Full fincollars allow for both precise fin spacingand maximum fin-to-tube contact.Three styles of plate fins are offeredto maximize heat transfer efficiencyby providing the most square footageof heat transfer within a given crosssectional area.Aerofin finned-tubing fabrication.Aerofin offers a range of fin options to meet design requirements of even the most challenging applications.Fin TypeFin ThicknessAvailableMaterialsCopper andaluminum.MaximumSurfaceTemperature*Edgewound Fin0.010” to 0.020”Footed “L” Fin0.012” to 0.020”Copper, aluminum, and carbon steel.Up to 400 FOverlapped Footed0.012” to 0.020”Copper andaluminum.Up to 600 FEmbedded0.015” to 0.030”Copper, aluminum, carbon steel, andstainless steel.Up to 750 F0.0075” to 0.016”Copper, aluminum, carbon steel, andstainless steel.Up to 400 FPlate FinTin coatingsavailable.ExampleUp to 400 FWave FinStar Fin*Maximum surface temperature is determined by considering both the inlet fluid and inlet air temperature.Flat Fin

HEADERS AND CONNECTIONSHeaders are typically round pipe barrelsor fabricated boxes that incorporateround pipe connections which allow fluidto pass through to the finned tubes.Pipe connections can be provided witha number of different connection styles, including male pipe threads (NPT-M),plain or butt weld ends, Victaulic grooveor flanged.Pipe barrel headers are most commonlyused unless high fluid flow rates arerequired, or unless the applicationdemands regular internal headerand tube maintenance. For theseapplications, an Aerofin fabricated boxheader is designed with a tube sheet andbox enclosure fitted with either a pluggedplate or removable cover plate. The plugged plate design (PDRP)comes equipped with removable plugsopposite every tube. The plugs provideaccess for internal inspection, cleaningor for plugging an individual tube. Theremovable cover plate design (PDRC)tube-to-HeADer AnD tube-to-return benD JointsAerofin offers several methods for joiningtubes-to-headers and tubes-to-return bends. When selecting the proper joining method, consideration must be given to the design pressureand temperature, materials of construction, operating environment and code requirements.Available joint types include silver brazing, weldingand torque-controlled roller expansion. Coilswhich have a pipe barrel header design will requireeither brazed or welded joints, whereas coils withfabricated box header designs will typically haveroller expanded tube-to-header joints. As an addedoption, tube-to-header joints may be silver brazedor welded after the roller expansion process. The method of joining tubes-to-return bends isalso dependent on the same factors as describedabove, however, the choices are limited to brazingor welding. In certain cases, the tubes and returnbends can be provided in a single, formed piecereferred to as a hair-pinned tube which eliminatessome or all of those joints.Hairpinned tube, eliminating returnbend joints.Hairpin, as installed.allows the fabricated box header cover tobe unbolted and removed from the box, providing access to the tubes for internalinspection, cleaning, or for plugging anindividual tube. With both design options, the coil endopposite the connections (Blind End) canbe fitted with return bends for circuitingthe fluid throughout the coil, or with anadditional fabricated box when access toboth ends of the coil is required.

inner DistributinG tube steAm CoilsInner distributing tube steam coils arecommonly referred to as “non-freeze”coils.* The “non-freeze” nomenclaturerefers to the inner distributing tubescapability of protecting the condensatefrom freezing when dealing with inlet airtemperatures below 32 F. As shown inthe figure below, this tube-within-a-tubedesign delivers steam through a smallerinner tube inside the outer finned tube. The inner tube has orifices located radiallyto distribute steam evenly along the lengthof the coil. This allows for more uniformheating while the temperature of thesaturated steam keeps the condensatefrom sub-cooling inside the coil, especiallywhen modulating the steam flow for lowload conditions. The inner distributing tube design alsoincorporates a unique side-by-sideheader arrangement that uses thesteam supply header section to keep thecondensate-return header section warmwhile condensate passes from the coil tothe return piping.Installation is simplified by allowingthe coil to be installed level. By pitchingRETURN HEADERthe tube bundle inside the casingand allowing gravity to assist theremoval of condensate, Aerofin’s innerdistributing tube steam coil permitsvarious installation arrangements. TheseSTEAM DISTRIBUTING TUBEOUTER TUBEORIFICESFINSSUPPLY HEADERAEROFININNER-DISTRIBUTINGTUBE HEADERCONDENSATE OUTSTEAM INinstallation options can include horizontaltubes with horizontal air flow, horizontaltubes with vertical air flow, or verticaltubes with horizontal air flow.*Freezing of any steam heating coil will occurwhen the piping system fails to remove thecondensate properly. Since it may be necessaryto reduce the inlet steam pressure in order tosecure a wide range of operating points, particularattention should be paid to the return pipingto ensure that the coil is completely drained.A piping professional’s guidelines will addressparticular situations or possible alternatives tomeet individual site requirements. Condensatethat is not properly removed from any steam coilcan result in premature failure due to freezingor water hammer. Steam coils must haveprovision for venting non-condensable gaseswhich are removed from condensing steam. Abuildup of non-condensable gases will reducethe overall heating capacity, and may causesystem corrosion in the presence of air andcarbon dioxide. Aerofin does not warrant againstcorrosion, erosion, abrasion, water hammer,or freezing.

FRAMES, HOUSINGS & TRANSITIONSEvery Aerofin coil is provided with acasing system designed to support thefinned tube bundle, headers, and returnbends while isolating them from externalforces. In addition, each casing providesallowances for thermal expansionand contraction.Coil frame housings and inlet/outlettransition pieces are available with anyAerofin coil to allow for easy access andeconomical maintenance. Frame housingsare designed to be welded or bolted intothe ductwork, permitting individual coilsto be removed, like a drawer, withoutdisturbing the duct work or externalpiping. The coil envelope and casing aredesigned to fit inside a newly fabricatedor existing outer frame housing. Whencoils are being replaced from an existingouter frame housing, each new coil will beshipped complete with a cover plate forsealing into the existing frame.Inlet/outlet transition pieces are usedto transition from the system ductworkto the Aerofin equipment. Thesetransition pieces are integrated with theframe housing and welded air-tight tothe specified duct pressure. AlthoughAerofin’s outer frame housing andtransition pieces are welded air tight, they are visually inspected but not tested, unless otherwise specified.Aerofin’s outer frame housings andtransition pieces can be fabricated froma variety of material options includingaluminum, carbon steel, stainless or otherspecialty materials.QUALITY ASSURANCEAerofin’s dedicated factory quality controldepartment reviews all details of anorder and verifies that every step in themanufacturing process complies withordered requirements and Aerofin’s ownstringent design standards. All ASMEinspections are performed by a full-timethird-party authorized inspector.Every coil fabricated by Aerofin isleak tested before shipment. Testingrequirements vary depending upon theapplication, customer specifications, andASME Code requirements.
