The goal ofSB 1440 is to streamline the transfer process for California community collegestudents planning to attend a California State University (CSU) system campus.Thus far, Pierce College has submitted for approval to the State Chancellor’sOffice two degree pathways. The first of these pathways is based on a statewidemodel curriculum program in Mathematics. Our second SSB 1440 degree is inSociology which has been approved by our Region 7 CSU campuses, CaliforniaState University Northridge, California State University Los Angeles, andCalifornia State University Dominguez Hills. In addition to these two degreepathways, Pierce College faculty in Physics, Child Development, Business, andHistory are reviewing the options in each of their disciplines for adopting atransfer pathway degree.As we commit to improving the transfer process, we hope you will benefit andthat we are able to assist you along the path to your educational goals. General CatalogPierce College52012 2014Welcome to Pierce CollegeCollege InformationHistory of the CollegeThe first classes at Pierce, which were designed to provide technicaland practical agricultural training, began in the fall of 1947 underbare light bulbs in makeshift classrooms created from Quonset hutssalvaged from World War II. The College’s first students, 212 maleWorld War II veterans (77 full-time and 135 part-time), enrolled in46 courses and weathered the sun, the winds, power failures, floods,and mud. The College colors, selected by the students of PierceCollege in 1947, are scarlet and white.Community pressures and demands soon caused the College tobroaden its educational scope and also to admit women in February1951. In the summer of 1956, by official action of the Board ofEducation, the College name was changed to Pierce College. Underthis new name, the College continues as one of nine colleges in theLos Angeles Community College District.Today the College serves a highly literate population, preparingstudents to take their place or to retrain in industries at the forefrontof technological advances. While the College remains unique in thegreater Los Angeles area because of its farm and its instructionalprogram in agriculture, natural resources management, animalhealth technology, and related fields, it may be best characterized byits broad range of instructional programs. Students may choose topursue a program in liberal arts and sciences and then transfer to afour-year college or university, or they may select from a variety ofoccupational fields including computer technology, journalism, nursing, office administration, and welding.Complementing the instructional programs are community servicesprograms for adults and children on topics of popular interest.For the academic year 2012-2013 the fall semester will run fromAugust 27 to December 16, 2012. The spring semester will followfrom February 4 to June 3, 2013.For the academic year 2013-2014 the fall semester will run fromAugust 29 to December 18, 2013. The spring semester will followfrom February 6 to June 4, 2014.The regular program consists of two semesters, 16 weeks in length.Classes are generally scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10:10 p.m. Thereare a limited number of Saturday and Sunday offerings.
