It seems to be monotonous at times, mundane and laborious. Sometimes there are absolute highsand at other times life sapping lows and then thereappears to be a dull thud to every life – the end. So is there more?Well, if you believe in a life after death, you are a spiritual person. At thisschool we are also spiritual, as we teach our students the about the TriuneGod. For me personally, when life throws me those life zapping moments, orthose mundane and laborious tasks, it is God calling me to look to him. Christgives hope to all situations, as his message is “I am with you always, to the veryend of the age” (Matthew 28:20).Like the saying ‘life doesn’t end when you’re 40’, we are happy to boast as aLutheran school that ‘life doesn’t end when you die’.A Mission StatementA mission statement provides a goal for an organisation. We set high goals sothat we might strive for excellence. Thank you for reading along this term. Phonetic Instruction Results at WLPSThis year’s NAPLAN literacy scores for WLPS are particularly significant. For the Year 5and Year 7 students, these NAPLAN scores measure a period of time where we haveparticularly focussed our approach to teaching literacy using a purely phoneticapproach.Below is a table using the raw NAPLAN data for spelling as it is the area that will bestshow progress in phonetic instruction. For the two year period measured from whenthe Year Five students (this year) were in Year 3 (in 2014), average growth is known nationally to be 1.5 bands. No matter what our student’s ability, our results indicate all ofthe Year 5 students grew at this average rate or better. Some students were able to‘catch-up’ to their peers by doubling the expected growth rate!SPELLING20142016Band GrowthStudent 1Band 0.3Band 4.23.9Student 2Band 3.9Band 5.92.0Student 3Band 3.3Band 5.92.6Student 4Band 3.0Band 5.92.9Student 5Band 2.5Band 5.02.5Student 6Band 4.7Band 7.42.7Student 7Band 5.3Band 7.01.7Student 8Band 5.7Band 7.82.1So why the switch to SSP?Continuously monitoring student progress is a critical part of the SSP program. It allowsus to collect whole school data every five weeks. This is important to be able to givewritten feedback on a more continuous basis.SSP is more than a spelling program. It allows us to work on the skills of processingspeed, working memory and more. It is an integrated approach to Literacy teaching, much broader than simply a spelling lesson. It begins explicitly teaching speaking andlistening skills and empowers learners by teaching them how to ‘crack the code’ of theEnglish language. Students have been empowered by the focus on sentence levelwriting and reading this year and teachers believe that student attitudes to readingand writing have greatly improved (this also shows through work samples). Our NAPLANresults demonstrate above the national average in the majority of literacy areas! How is the SSP going then? One of the positive aspects of the program is seeing students work through the coloursat their own pace, always receiving instruction targeted to their needs. In Term 1 Week2, you can see where the students started as a group. In Term 3, you can see the current progress of our students is above our expectations! By Term 4 we hope that againstudents will be tested and in the F-2 levels we can use PM reading testing to give us anidea of their reading progress. We will also be keen to see our 2017 NAPLAN results which will give us a more specificread on how the SSP program is performing.
