TERMS, CONDITIONS & RESPONSIBILITIESTERMS1.0 The RA must be enrolled at CSULB as a full-time student for the period of appointment. Extended studies enrollmentdoes not fulfill this requirement. RAs must carry no less than 12 units, but not more than 18 units per semester ofundergraduate work. RAs who want to take more than 18 units must get prior approval from the Assistant orAssociate Director. RAs cannot be enrolled in more than 20 classroom hours (including labs) per semester. Due to the40 hour-per-week schedule during training and Beach Days, RAs cannot be enrolled in classes, online or in person, atany institution during training periods. This includes Summer Session 3 and all Winter Session classes. The RAshould check with their advisor to ensure that they do not need to take any classes during this time before acceptingthe appointment.1.1 The RA must have completed two semesters of college work before the period of appointment and preferably wouldhave lived in university housing at any institution for at least one semester.1.2 The RA must maintain at least a 2.7 CSULB, semester, and cumulative G.P.A. during the duration of theirappointment. RAs placed in Honors House must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A. for the duration of their employment. CSULBHousing & Residential Life reserves the right to check grades of RAs through the duration of the RA appointment.RAs who fall below 2.7 but above 2.5 may be granted probation, depending on circumstances and approval by theAssociate Director. RAs whose GPAs fall below 2.5 will be released without the potential of probation.1.4 RAs cannot be enrolled in more than two evening classes (including labs). RAs shall not undertake full-time studentteaching, a full-time internship, or graduate assistantship while being appointed by Housing & Residential Life.1.5 The RA is expected to prioritize the Resident Assistant appointment over outside commitments so that thosecommitments will not conflict with the responsibilities of the RA role. Membership in extracurricular activities isencouraged and may be continued provided it does not interfere with the responsibilities to HRL. Resident Assistantswho have academic or extracurricular commitments are required to review their situation with Housing & ResidentialLife prior to accepting employment as a Resident Assistant. If academic or RA performance suffers the RA will berequired to limit their involvement in these other activities in order to maintain their appointment. Duty scheduling isimperative and involvement in clubs may need to be adjusted in order to ensure all duty days and hours are covered.Due to the extensive time commitment, RAs cannot rush/pledge a fraternity or sorority during the period ofappointment. RAs cannot hold any other on-campus or off-campus job while in the role.1.6 The RA will receive in-kind support in the form of a bed space (room style, single/double, and bathroomaccommodation subject to building assignment and housing needs) in a residence hall and a 210-block meal planthrough 49ers Dining Services. Meal plans are active only when food services are open. The RA is not exempt fromthe HRL Social Fee for residents and must pay the yearly fee ( 60) before the start of Fall 2021 training. TheRA must also comply with all HRL and CSLUB immunization requirements before the start of Fall 2021training. RAs agree to sign a Housing License Agreement (HLA) and further agree to sleep in their assigned room,take board in the residence hall dining facilities, and be accessible within their assigned community a majority ofnights and days, respectively, as a condition of the RA appointment. If a Resident Assistant is not able to fulfill thisrequirement, they should not be a Resident Assistant.1.7 Approximately 13,598 for the RA’s 2021-2022 room and board will be reported to the Financial Aid Office. This valuewill be taken into consideration when calculating 2021-2022 Financial Award Letter and will reduce it accordingly.Information sessions will be held with the Financial Aid office before students accept this appointment. Consultationwith the Financial Aid Office is encouraged if there are questions.1.8 During the weeks when classes are in session, the RA is expected to maintain an appointment time commitment of anaverage of twenty (20) hours a week. A reasonable schedule would include a combination of patterns of timeincluding community commitments (i.e. meetings, executing residential curriculum strategies, being available toresidents at varying intervals during the day and night, etc.),on-duty commitments (rounds, emergency response,answering the duty phone, completing duty logs, writing incident reports, etc.), and fulfilling RA Student Assistantresponsibilities. The RA accepts the foregoing as a reasonable attempt to define an appointment that is not easily

translated into an hourly basis or reduced to specific duties without gross oversimplification of the nature of theprimary role.CONDITIONS2.0 The undersigned student agrees to accept a temporary appointment as a Resident Assistant (RA) at California StateUniversity, Long Beach beginning August 2, 2021 and ending on or before May 15 or May 22, 2022 (depending oncommencement week scheduling) subject to the terms and conditions contained herein. The use of housing facilitiesis subject to the regulations contained in Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations.2.1 The Resident Assistant appointment is a full academic year student leadership opportunity and commitment. Theappointment period is for one full academic year (consecutive fall, winter, and spring terms, including breaks). The RAappointment is at-will and appointments may be rescinded at any time for failure to maintain grade requirements, tosuccessfully complete on-going training requirements, to adequately perform appointment responsibilities, to supportand be in continuous compliance with CSULB or HRL policy, and/or the law, or as a result of being placed on eitheracademic or disciplinary probation by the University. The RA understands and agrees that assignment to a particularbuilding or residential college is not guaranteed and will accept placement in any location where their skills are mostneeded. HRL will give advance notice for anything not appointment action related as it is our intention to keep staff intheir roles provided that they continue to perform well. An Assistant Director, Associate Director, or Executive Directorof Housing may rescind appointments to the RA role at any time for unsatisfactory performance in the role or conductconcerns prior to the start of the role. All appointment action items are addressed through the staff accountabilityprocess.2.2 In all circumstances, the RA is supervised by a Residential Coordinator and Area Coordinator, and their performanceis subject to review for continuance. RAs will receive a performance evaluation each semester. Continuation to thenext semester and/or reappointment for the next year is contingent upon several factors including on-goingsatisfactory performance evaluations by the supervisor. Satisfactory performance evaluation is defined as meeting orexceeding expectations as defined by the evaluation in all areas of the appointment description. RAs who are onperformance probation at the time reappoints are made will not be eligible to return the following year. In an effort tomaximize the number of students able to participate in the leadership development opportunity of serving asan RA, the department will limit the number of returning staff to no more than 50%. This means not all RAsrequesting to return will be able to do so. Reappointment will be based upon the RA’s performance,evaluation, and departmental need.2.3 If an RA leaves their appointment early, their housing and meal plan will be prorated. RAs will be required to move outof their residence hall space within 72 hours from the date of their resignation or release from the RA appointment,unless extenuating circumstances requires an adjustment to that timeline. RAs who resign or are released will beallowed to cancel their housing assignment without penalty. If the RA wants to remain living in university housing, andoccupancy numbers permit, they will be reassigned to a community outside of the Residential College in which theypreviously were appointed and will be responsible for paying for their room and board. Notice of resignation ortermination must be provided to the appropriate parties in writing.2.4 RAs are not authorized to represent or disseminate views or policies of CSULB HRL to anyone without prior approval.This includes engaging in activity or conduct in a manner such that a reasonable person would assume that the RAwas authorized to represent CSULB HRL, including, but not limited to, social media participation, blogging, orspeaking with/responding to inquiries from media outlets, including campus media. While the RA is free to expresstheir personal opinion, they must take reasonable steps to ensure that the expression is recognized by potentialrecipients as their personal opinion and not a representation of CSULB HRL. Reasonable steps include, but are notlimited to, a prefatory statement or disclaimer that the RA is not authorized to represent CSULB HRL and that anystatements made are solely the RA’s personal opinion and not a representation of CSULB HRL.RESPONSIBILTIESResponsibilities for the RA role include the following areas: Community Development & Residential Curriculum; Training,Meetings, and Communication; Administrative and Operational; On-Call and Crisis Management; and BehavioralExpectations and Professional Conduct.

Community Development & Residential Curriculum3.1 The RA will serve as a resource for students regarding areas of personal and academic concerns, and whennecessary, will refer residents for follow up counseling/advising with others as appropriate. RAs must spend time withtheir residents to get to know them as individuals to maximize the student development role.3.2 The RA will assume responsibility for facilitating, conducting, and documenting structured conversations with residentsin their assigned area, requiring persistence in outreach, on a regular basis as directed by their supervisor (e.g.,Intentional Interactions).3.3 The RA will meet with the residents of each room to facilitate complete and thorough roommate agreements at thebeginning of the year and whenever there is turnover in the room.3.3 The RA will be expected to further their personal mediation/conflict resolution skills and familiarize themselves withcampus resources to facilitate successful roommate mediations in the college. The RA will meet with the residents ofeach suite/room to facilitate complete and thorough roommate agreements at the beginning of the year and wheneverthere is turnover in the suite/room.3.4 The RA will actively promote the concept of community in the halls and encourage residents to take responsibility forpositive and assertive behavior within that community.3.5 The RA will purposely promote holistic student and community development through the implementation of theResidential Curriculum programming model. These engagement strategies are accomplished through facilitation ofactive and passive programming at the direction of the department.3.6 The RA will actively participate in, and positively represent, Residential College Councils and other programmaticinitiatives to encourage residents to become active members in their communities.3.7 The RA will actively seek out and recruit representative(s) to Residential College Councils from their living area. Thisincludes but is not limited to serving as a resource for ideas and guidelines for programs and keeping therepresentative informed as to current issues or opportunities that may affect residents.3.8 The RA will clearly and positively communicate the guidelines that residents must live within, as noted in the HousingLicense Agreement, Standards for Student Conduct, Residence Hall Handbook policies, and the RoommateAgreement. When student behavior violates these guidelines, the RA will respond in a manner that the student isencouraged to not only take responsibility for their inappropriate behavior, but also to learn from the experience.3.9 The RA will utilize the meal plan to promote community development by having frequent meals with residents of theirliving area.3.10 The RA will encourage understanding, acceptance, and promote inclusive communities.3.11 The RA will motivate and advise residents regarding social, recreational, faculty and educational programs.3.12 RAs must be inclusive to individuals from all protected classes and of all backgrounds (i.e. ethnic, racial, cultural,religious, sexual orientation, gender expression, etc.). The RA should encourage better understanding of culturaldiversity and individual differences in their communities and on campus.Training, Meetings, and Communication4.0 The RA is expected to participate and actively engage in all mandatory training prior to the beginning of both the falland spring semesters. The RA must successfully complete any additional first-year or on-going staff trainingrequirements. This may include monthly all-college staff trainings, completing RA development workshops series, orother campus leadership experiences. The specific schedule will be determined prior to each period but may besubject to change. A housing accommodation will be provided during training as well as training meals. Fall Training Dates: August 3 – August 19, 2020Spring Training Dates: January 11 – January 15, 2021

4.1 RAs will be on duty throughout the opening and closing of the halls. This includes resident check-in and check-out,and academic break periods when the halls close.4.2 RAs will return to campus early to assist with opening responsibilities and stay late to assist with closing. RAs will alsoassist with department wide initiatives and hall preparation. This includes move-in and move-out, Beach Days,Homecoming, Family Day, Open House, Hiring & Recruitment, and all break periods. Academic break travel may notinterfere with the completion of responsibilities. This schedule will be determined by departmental needs andscheduling will happen during staff meeting early in the semester. RAs should communicate their travel plans beforebooking flights, buying tickets etc. to ensure there is no conflict with responsibilities of the appointment. Meals are notprovided during these break periods.4.3 RAs will reserve the following Fridays from 3:30-5:30pm for All-College staff meetings. These meetings are forcontinued training and development, presentations from campus partners, and a time for staff to connect. These staffmeetings are required in attendance. All conflicts must be communicated with their supervisor prior to the meeting. Friday, September 4, 2021Friday, October 2, 2021Friday, October 23, 2021Friday, November 13, 2021Friday, December 4, 2021Friday, February 5, 2021Friday, March 4, 2022Friday, March 25, 2022Friday, April 15, 2022Friday, May 6, 2022 – End of Year Banquet4.4 RAs will have bi-weekly 30 minute one-on-one meetings with their direct RC supervisor to discuss their floor andbuilding community, individual resident concerns or successes, the RA’s personal and professional development, aswell an any other issues or concerns the RC supervisor should be made aware.4.5 Weekly staff meetings are held for up to two hours at a determined time by the Residential Coordinator based on staffclass schedules for each Residential College. These staff meetings are required in attendance. All conflicts must becommunicated with their supervisor prior to the meeting.4.6 HRL encourages staff to take time away throughout each semester to maintain a positive work-life balance. A nightaway constitutes any evening in which an RA is not within the community by 2:00am and/or unable to perform theirrole if needed (i.e. impaired judgement). Staff should contact their supervisor to request evenings away from thecommunity at least 48 hours in advance, particularly if it is more than two consecutive days in a row. This allowssupervisors to account for the staff members in their area during emergencies and times of crisis.Administration and Operations5.0 The RA will design, develop, distribute, and post bulletin boards and door decorations for their assigned area asdirected by the supervisor and department.5.1 RAs are expected to submit well-written and timely incidents reports as described and instructed by supervisors. Allincident reports should be routed through the appropriate Maxient link provided.5.2 The RA will conduct room inspections prior to move-in, during mid-semester health and safety checks, and duringmove-outs. The RA should be observant and address/report any violations, damages, or safety concerns they seeany time they are in a student room or common area. Work orders should be submitted in a timely manner soconcerns can be addressed quickly.5.3 The RA will conduct Health and Safety inspections and complete the corresponding administrative requirements eachsemester as directed by their supervisory staff. RAs are also expected to assist with fire drills as directed. p
