November 2011Calgary Monthly Newsletter Page 5ewicalgary.comOVERCOMING OVERWHELMED:USING “BRAIN BASICS” TO CALMTHE STORMby Linda Goode, M.A., PresidentSavant Human Resources Ltd.Creators of the Front Line Leadership ProgramDo these words seem more and more familiar:overwhelmed, frazzled, tired, stressed, depleted? Have youever thought “a holiday sounds good or maybe short termdisability”! Recently an article in the Calgary Herald statedthat 1 in 10 North Americans over the age of 12 are takingantidepressants. So what’s that about? Why don’t timemanagement efforts seem to be enough these days? Andwhat can you do about it?The problem is actually pretty straight forward. Ourbrains are overwhelmed with input. More specifically, ourCentral Nervous System has too much “stuff” to process. Here’s an analogy. Picture yourself driving on a paved, wideopen country road with no traffic on a beautiful sunny dayversus driving on a 16 lane Toronto highway in a blizzardwith people driving faster and closer than they should be.Sound like a disaster waiting to happen? In terms of ourCentral Nervous Systems, many of us are living on the 16lane highway. When we’re over stimulated, our “top brain” recedes and our“primitive brain” becomes more dominant. Here’s thekicker – our “primitive brain” is mostly formed by the timewe are 4 years old and it is primarily unconscious. So whenwe’re over stimulated, our 4 year old brains are running theshow and we usually don’t realize it. Behaviours likeblaming, whining, gossiping, snapping, withdrawing, making excuses, putting others down, etc. are usuallyindicative of our 4 year old brains running the show.Bottom line - it’s hard to be viewed as professional, competent or credible when our 4 year old “primitive” brainis in charge. For those of you who will be attending CalgaryEWI’s November meeting, we’ll be discussing this in moredetail in my “Who’s Driving Your Bus” presentation. (Fordetails see page 14).In addition to affecting our work selves, over stimulationaffects our lives. Have you heard the expressions “I’d like tobe a human being not a human doing”? If you seem to besaying this to yourself, what can you do about it? Thesolution is also pretty straight forward but, it is unpopular. It means consciously thinking about what impact eachchoice / action/ task will have on your level of stimulation. It means adjusting some of your activities and expectationsso that you can lower your level of stimulation.Unfortunately we tend to use time as the criteria for ourdecisions. Like “how can I fit that visit in? or “I’ve got to getthe kids to soccer, do the grocery shopping, and answerthose emails”. What if your decision was based instead onthe level of stimulation? For example, “I’ve had a really busyday at work I’m not going to the mall after work to shop forshoes. I’m going to have a hot bath, sit by the fire and havedinner instead”.You can start to see why this solution is unpopular. Itusually means saying “no” to people or activities that wehaven’t said no to before.and that’s hard. It also meansthat we have to stop and notice ourselves to learn aboutwhat sooths our nervous systems and what doesn’t. That’shard too. In order to rest, our brains need a sense oftimelessness, spaciousness and silence. What kinds ofexperiences create that for your brain? The concept of managing stimulation to calm the storm issimple; the application can be more difficult. The rewards, however, can be significant. You might find yourself sayingthings like “I liked the way I handled myself at work today”or even “I really love my life”. Imagine that!Contact Linda at (403) 220-0037 or check the websitewww.FrontLineLeadership.caOur MissionOur VisionEWI brings together key individualsfrom diverse businesses for thepurpose of pomoting member firms, enhancing personal and professionaldevelopment, and encouragingcommunity involvement.A professional organization thatcreates value for its member firmsand their representatives throughcareer development, businessconnectivity, and involvement inlocal communities .EWI Corporate Offices / 515 South 700 East Suite 2A / Salt Lake City, Utah 84102 / Toll Free: 1.877.4EWI-NOW / Phone: 801.355.2800 / Fax: 801.355.2852online: ewiconnect.org email:ewi@ewiconnect.com
