AS P EMessag e f ro m t h e Pres ide ntThis is the time of year that all estimators are extremely busy developingestimates, proposals and getting the projects on the books for the springbuilding season. With that, I wish you all the luck and good fortunes inthese efforts. As well, the staff of ASPE and the Board of Directors have beenequally busy. I would like to take a moment and bring the membership up-to-datewith some of these actions. The financial position of ASPE is good. We have monies in the Scholarship fundsand Reserve funds. With cost savings realized from moving to a virtual office andfrom the reduction of staff, we are well into the black for the operating funds.Specific information on the budgets for 2019 and 2020 will soon be posted underthe Members Only sections of the website. The vision for Summit has been updated. It will now be an educational event withmultiple tracks of estimating academies. Of the possibilities, one track will bebeginning estimating, another track will be advanced estimating and managementskills. Other tracks will include preparation for and final study for CPE and AEPexams that will be administered on-site during the Summit. The focus of Summitwill be education with limited time spent on ASPE business. The Summit datesare August 20-22, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas. An ad hoc committee is underformation, with the focus of developing content and programs. This will be anexciting, value-driven Summit.Melvin D. Cowen, CPEASPE National President2019-2021As everyone has been notified, ASPE will be involved in this year’s “AdvancingPreconstruction” program delivered by Hanson Wade. ASPE will host a boothduring this event, and on Thursday will conduct an estimating academy. ASPEwill have Member-Speakers and will be well represented. The goal is to gain newexposure, promote membership, and to market the CPE and AEP Programs.I would like to thank those Members who have responded to the challenge ofbringing in new members. We must continue promoting ASPE and the advantages available through Membership, as well as the importance of the CPE and AEPPrograms. We will continue to strive to make this Society the construction industry’s leaderand recognized authority in professional estimating. Georgia Tech’s Carbon Neutral Energy Solutions LaboratoryKALWALL SPECIFICATION:Panel: 2-3/4”, thermally brokenIn the simplest terms, a net zero energy building generates as much or more energy thanit uses. Georgia Tech’s Carbon Neutral Energy Solutions Laboratory (CNES) in Atlanta,Georgia, is one of the few buildings in the country that approaches net zero carbonemissions and has been hailed for setting a new standard in sustainable design.Kalwall diffuse natural lighting curtainwall systems are a key component to the 42,000square foot building that recently earned another distinction for its design when theAmerican Institute of Architects (AIA) New Jersey named the CNES a Merit Award winner. The building was designed by HDR Architecture of Princeton, N.J.Grid core: reverse shojiExterior FRP: crystalInterior FRP: whiteSystem finish: aluminum #79In its jury comments, the AIA New Jersey said “this building puts convictions aboutenvironmental friendliness to work”.U-Value: .14Solar Heat Gain Coefficient: 0.17Visible Light Transmission: 12%WHAT IS KALWALL?Georgia Tech is a public research university and the CNES is the centerpiece of itsmission. HDR describes the CNES as a facility that “sets a new standard for sustainabledesign for buildings of its type by optimizing passive energy technologies, reducingelectricity loads, and maximizing the use of renewable energy”.An impressive curtainwall of Kalwall panels floods the main portion of the building innatural diffuse light, integrating perfectly with the goals of the CNES because of its bestindustry solar heat gain control. It is one reason the building achieved LEED-NC Platinumcertification.Among the other awards the building has won include:2013 Beyond Green Award of Merit for High Distinction in High-Performance Buildings –National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) and Sustainable Buildings Industry Council.2013 Merit Award, Excellence in Architecture category - Society of College and UniversityPlanners (SCUP)/AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (AIA-CAE) ExcellenceAwards2012 Merit Award Built Category - American Institute of Architects (AIA), Georgia Chapter2012 Best Project, Green Building Category - ENR Southeast, Best Projects contest CABOT CorpFor the best thermal performance availablein any translucent daylighting technologyconsider specifying Kalwall Lumira aerogel insulation for panel U-Values up to0.05 (R-20).
