DescriptionMaintenanceThe Masoneilan 37/38 spring-diaphragmactuator is a simple, powerful, mechanicaldevice. There are two general types: Air-toExtend Stem and Air-to-Retract Stem.Actuators are designated by case size: Nos. 9,11, 13, 15, 18 and 18L.Air-to-Extend Actuators (Type 37)The nominal range of a spring-diaphragmactuator is the air pressure range in pounds persquare inch (psi) for rated stroke under no load.Common ranges are 3–15 psi and 6–30 psi.The spring range and maximum allowablesupply pressure are marked on the serial plate. For a 3–15 psi nominal range, the stem willstart to stroke when the air pressure reaches 3psi, and will complete the stroke when thepressure reaches 15 psi (plus or minus 5%).In the air-to-extend actuator, conformation ofthe molded diaphragm to the diaphragm plateserves as a flexible upper guide for the actuatorstem (26). The lower guide is an oilimpregnated bronze bushing (37) located in thespring adjustor (36). The air-to-retract actuatordiffers from the air-to-extend unit in that thespring (22), spring barrel (71) and springadjustor (36) are located above the diaphragmplate (40) and diaphragm (39) which areinverted. A gasket (19) at the joint of thediaphragm case and yoke and a packing boxaround the actuator stem prevents air leakage. The diaphragm acts as a flexible upper guideand the packing box assembly as the lowerguide for the actuator stem.Air connections are 1/4" NPT. Connections arelocated in the upper diaphragm case (air-toextend actuators) or yoke ectiveDiaphragmArea (sq.in.)451113151818L711051452002004 Baker HughesDiaphragm ReplacementBefore disassembling the actuator, all springcompression should be relieved by turning thespring adjustor (36), to prevent the upper casepopping up when the cap screws (45) areremoved. This is especially important on actuatorswith a high initial spring setting. Remove capscrews (45), nuts (46) and upper diaphragm case(43). Remove nut (30) and washer (41) to releasethe diaphragm (39). If possible, the replacementdiaphragm should be of the molded type suppliedby GE Masoneilan, but in an emergency adiaphragm may be cut from flat sheet stock for upto and including No. 15 actuators. To allowsufficient stroke without restriction due to flatnessof the diaphragm, the diaphragm bolt circle shouldbe about 10% greater than that of the diaphragmcase.Replace washer (41), nut (30) and upperdiaphragm case.Spring AdjustmentAn air supply, with a gauge and regulator, shouldbe piped to the upper diaphragm case for thisadjustment. Adjust spring compression so that theactuator stem (26) just begins to move when airpressure reaches minimum pressure of the rangestamped on the serial plate. This movement ismost easily detected by feeling the stem as airpressure is applied.Note: Adjust spring compression only whenthere is no air pressure on diaphragm.MaximumStroke (in.)¾11½22½4 2021 Baker Hughes Company. Air-to-Retract Actuators (Type 38)Diaphragm ReplacementThe procedure is the same as for air-to-extendactuators except that the entire upper caseassembly (including spring barrel (71), spring(22), spring seats (33 and 34), nut (30) anddiaphragm plate (40) must be removed torelease the diaphragm. Install a new diaphragmand reassembly the above parts.Spring AdjustmentThe procedure is identical with that for air-toextend actuators except that supply air is pipedto the 1/4" port in the yoke. 2021 Baker Hughes Company. All rights reserved.Packing BoxThe packing box is subject to low air pressureonly and requires minimum maintenance. The packing rings have a square section and aremade of carbon core with braided PTFE jacket. The packing may be added to or completelyreplaced without disassembling either theactuator or the mechanism (or valve) to which itis attached. Be sure to tighten packing nut (20)lightly. Over-tightening will cause excessivefriction, resulting in sluggish performance.Masoneilan 37/38 Actuator Instruction Manual 5
