Theforklift driver at the roofing supply storeasked, ‘What is that Thing?.’ I guess that’swhere the name came from.”He said this is the second show forThe Orange Thing. He entered it inthe Mesquite Motor Mania in Mayand the recent Super Run. At bothshows his entry won a plaque for‘Outstanding Vehicle.’“I have entered a vehicle in every Super Run and Motor Mania show in Mesquite since the first one,” Hanson said. “I enjoy the open-header cruising andslow drags as well as the amazing varietyof vehicles on display.”Alain and Renea Wood from Mesquite participated in this years SuperRun, as well as past shows. They both entered a 1937 Ford Tudorand 1971 Chevrolet Malibu in the Super Run this year. 16MESQUITE MONTHLYWhat does retirementsecurity mean to you?By Derrick MartinezOctober is National Retirement Security Month. But what does retirementsecurity mean toyou? And howcan you worktoward achievingit? Here are somesuggestions: Build yourresources. Whileyou’re working, save in taxadvantaged accounts such as yourIRA and 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan. In your401(k), contribute at least enough toearn your employer’s match, if one isoffered, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up.Remember, especially early in yourcareer, time is often your biggest asset.Be sure to save early, since the longeryou wait, the more you’ll need to saveto help reach your goals. Look for ways to boost retirement income. When transitioning toretirement, you can take steps to alignyour income with your needs. Forexample, consider Social Security. Youcan start collecting it as early as 62, butyour monthly payments will be muchlarger if you can wait until your “full”retirement age, typically between 66and 67. (Payments will “max out” at age70.) So, if you have sufficient incomefrom a pension or your 401(k) andother retirement accounts, and youand your spouse are in good healthwith a family history of longevity, you may consider delaying takingSocial Security. You also might wantto explore other income-producingvehicles, such as certain annuitiesthat are designed to provide a lifetimeincome stream. Prepare for unexpected costs.During your retirement, you cananticipate some costs, such as housingand transportation, but other expensesare more irregular and can’t alwaysbe predicted, such as those connectedwith health care. Even with Medicare, you could easily spend a few thousanddollars a year on medical expenses, soyou may want to budget for these costsas part of your emergency savings, andpossibly purchase supplemental insurance. You may also want to considerthe possibility of needing some type oflong-term care, which is not typicallycovered by Medicare and can be quiteexpensive. The average annual costof a private room in a nursing homeis more than 100,000, and it’s about 55,000 per year for a home healthaide, according to Genworth, an insurance company. To address these costs, you may want to consider some formof protection, such as long-term careinsurance or life insurance with a longterm care component. Do your estate planning. It’s hardto feel totally secure in retirement ifyou’re unsure of what might happen ifyou have an unexpected health event, become incapacitated or die earlierthan expected. That’s why you’ll wantto create a comprehensive estate plan– one that might include documentssuch as a durable power of attorney, awill and a living trust. A review of yourinsurance coverages and beneficiariescan also help protect your assets andensure they are distributed the wayyou want. In creating your plan, youwill need to work with your financialadvisor and a legal professional, andpossibly your tax advisor as well.Thinking holistically about yourretirement security and developingand executing a strategy aligned withyour goals may help free you to enjoyone of the most rewarding times ofyour life. This article was written by Edward Jonesfor use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.
