Do the restrictions of Borer (selecting) apply toremoving a book from a bookshelf? Meaning, mustone remove only the desired book, by hand, and forimmediate use?A. The laws of Borer only apply to a Halachicallyrecognized "mixture." For example, if nuts and berriesare mixed together and one desires to eat the berries, one would have to adhere to the three aforementionedguidelines when selecting the berries. Rav ShlomoZalman Auerbach ruled that books on a bookshelf arenot considered "mixed together" -- they rather standadjacent to each other. As such, books on a bookshelfare not subject to the restrictions of Borer. However,Rav Shlomo Zalman noted, if books happened to bepiled messily on top of each other (e.g., in a bin), thebooks would indeed constitute a "mixture," and onewould have to abide by the restrictions of Borer.Interestingly, Rav Yitzchak Yosef rules for Sephardimthat books are never considered "mixed" together, even if in a pile / bin, since they are each readilydistinguishable from one another. As such, one wouldnever have to follow the restrictions of Borer whendealing with books, in any context.YICC LIBRARYPlease remember you need to inform either our rabbisor the office before you remove a book from the library.PLEASE RETURN ANY BOOKS YOU MAY HAVE TOTHE SHUL OFFICE.Young Israel of Century City 9317 W.
