Killarney Heights High SchoolNewsletterRespect Connect AspireTerm 3 Week 2 2018Principal’s ReportCongratulations to .Where do I start? This week has been such a celebratory week with the Aspire Awards and so muchsporting success. We celebrate Killarney Heights as a top all rounder! Not only do we achieve academically, we have acomprehensive welfare system and we smash at sport! This is what makes a great school, we do wellin all areas, we help shape well balanced young adults, we aim to give them experiences that preparethem for life. This week started with (Student Representative Council) SRC students giving each year group apresentation on how to become better learners. The main ideas of these presentations were gatheredthrough classroom observations. How did this happen? As part of our Instructional Rounds process,4 students observed a number of classes, taking note of teachers, students, and the learning that wastaking place in the classroom.1 Page

These students then met to come up with patterns. From these patterns the SRC found a number ofways that students could improve their learning: from asking more probing questions, to simple thingslike listening carefully when the teacher was giving instructions. These ideas will be followed up withactivities in home room this week. It is exciting that we can have students making decisions and beinginvolved in their own learning. The regional athletics carnival was held at Homebush this week, with some outstanding results. KyleFisher was first in 3 events, Toby Dreyer fist in discus, Tea Lisle left the rest of the field in the dust inthe hurdles and Cameron Latham won the 800m. You can watch some of these for yourself on ourKillarney Heights High Facebook page. There are more results in this newsletter. The week ended with the Aspire Awards: Two hundred and forty students from Years 7-12 wererecognised at the presentation. 120 students were given recognition for outstanding academicperformance. The Year Advisers selected the top 20 academic students in each year, after reading thereports. It was a difficult task as so many students are striving to be the best that they can be. Awardswere also given for consistent effort, recognising improvement, commitment and dedication to theirstudies. It is so important to acknowledge this as much in life is setting goals and working hard toachieve them.It is also that time of the year when students in Year 8 and 10 select their subjects for 2019. Our twostage process aims to give as much choice as possible for students. In the first selection, studentschoose the subject that they wish to study. This gives us an indication of which subjects are likely torun and the numbers. We then create lines, with a number of subjects on each line and ask thestudents to choose again. We cannot guarantee that this will suit everyone, but we believe that bydoing it this way that we give as much choice as we can.Enrolments for 2019 are being taken now. Can you please let anyone who is thinking of enrolling, totell us as soon as possible as classes and number of teachers are being decided in the next few weeks.Hayley EmmertonPrincipal2 Page

UBS Finance Academy – Maria d’Amour Year 11Year 11 Business Studies student, Maria d’Amour was recently chosen to attend theprestigious UBS Finance Academy for 1 week during the July school holidays at MacquarieUniversity. She and the other students took part in a range of lectures and workshops onfinancial markets and the inner workings of the banking industry. They had the opportunityto rub shoulders with key industry leaders of the banking industry in Australia and completecase studies.See a summary of her experiences below. Well done Maria! The UBS Finance Academy took place for the week of the 9th – 12th July at MacquarieUniversity. I was grateful to be one of 40 students to engage in the opportunity; where wewere exposed to a range of career opportunities within finance. This program gave me aninsight into the financial services industry and the role of an investment bank in the economy. Our day began at 7am and followed a tight schedule of collaborative workshops and lecturesuntil 10pm when we retired to our dorms at Dunmore Lang College. Yes, we stayed thereovernight and, yes, the food was delicious. We had an excursion to the UBS offices at Chifley Towers and the CNN news studio where welistened to various educational lectures. I had the pleasure of meeting the Executive Directorof Corporate Client Solutions, who offered to mentor me in my progression from school intothe workforce.Additionally, our groups spent endless hours working on a case study on the topic of mergersand acquisitions. We then presented to a panel of judges and my group were awardedascribed winners (despite the content being what 3rd year University students would usuallyundertake). This was an insightful program, which I recommend to anyone potentially interested in finance.Maria d’AmourEmma HiggsBusiness Studies Teacher4 Page
