KIRKWOOD KRONICLEA Christian Community Knowing, Loving & Serving Christ, toMake Him Known to All.August 2015Dear Members and Friends,This summer, I have very much enjoyed leading an 8:30 a.m.Sunday School class on Division and Reunion: A History ofAmerican Presbyterianism produced by Union PresbyterianSeminary in Richmond. It is amazing to see how current struggles in the church can be traced back to unresolved issues fromthe 1700s. Race, gender and polity disagreements continue toconfront the modern Presbyterian Church and sometimes it’sjust downright funny on how the church lives out its call fromour Lord.We will be meeting in the Fellowship Hall through August 30, so feel free to join usfor some spirited discussions.I trust your summer is going well. Keep one another in your prayers and don’tforget we are in a single worship service at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. It is socool to see everyone together.Fondly,Keep enjoying the sunshine I mean the Sonshine.mcondrey@cox.netKirkWood Presbyterian Church1209 Hampton HighwayYorktown, VA 23693Phone: 757-766-0343 Fax: 757-766-0962E-mail: kirkwood@kirkwood.hrcoxmail.comWebsite: http://www.kirkwoodpcusa.org/Summer Worship: 10:00 a.m.Sunday School:8:30 a.m.AdultIn This Issue Children and Youth FallPrograms Blood Drive Project Linus New Director of Music State of KW Property &Facilities Fri. Project LinusMissionI would like to thank each person who made a quilt, afghan or fleeceblanket for Project Linus. Here are some guidelines from Project Linusand my own observations. The Preemie quilts need to be 36X36inches. Please make larger crocheted or knitted afghans for the olderchildren because our tiny preemies get their little toes and fingerscaught in the stitches. Linus Project asks that one side of the quilts forpreemies be made with black and white fabric because the tiny onesdon’t see colors yet. The quilt tops can be colorful and bright to comfortthe parents. Also, please be mindful of anything that can trigger allergy symptoms inthe preemies and children such as smoke, pet hairs or fragrances if you wash your donation.I am so proud to tell you that we had a total of 26 quilts, afghans and fleece blankets. Nancy’sCalico Patch collects all these items from other churches, organizations and individuals andtakes them to Norfolk Children’s Hospital. Note: Nancy’s Calico Patch reopened in June atNewport Square Shopping Center. Any fabric and yarn store makes me happy and the closerthe better.Keeping you in stitches,Wilma MitchellKW Silver on HiatusKirkWood SilverKIRKWOOD SILVER is still on vacation, but we are eagerly awaiting our September"kick-off." We ALWAYS have a great time! Watch for details in the next Kronicle. Ifyou have ideas for KWS get-togethers, please let the Gilberts, the Coverdales, theBirches, or Miriam Mason know.5

Mission Committee’s MinistryMissionThe mission committee did not physically meet in July. Like most of the Kirkwoodcongregation, we are relaxing and enjoying the summer with family and vacations. It's agood time to rejuvenate and prepare for the events coming up. Before we know it, pumpkins will grace the church yard! Our committee does want to again stress how thankful we are for the volunteers who make ourmissions possible. On July 18th, we served lunch to the homeless at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.Volunteers served 32 guests our summer fare of hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, salad andchips. We are blessed to have this ministry and are thankful thatvolunteers make it possible to continue. The remaining dates for the St. Paul's Weekend Ministry are September 19th, October 17th, andDecember 5th. We would love to have your fellowship and assistance in serving. Sign-up sheetswill be on the mission bulletin board. If you are interested in joining the Mission Committee, or have any questions about ourministries, please contact Donna O'Hara (344-7812) or Chris Wood (335-3475). We meet on thefirst Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.Tides OutingCongregational CareAttention all baseball lovers: our annual trip to Norfolk to attend aTides baseball game is now scheduled for Saturday, August 8. The game starts at 7:05 pm.Please check in the narthex at the church to sign up or ask Scott Coverdale for more information. We are planning to have box seats. If possible, it would be good to arrange car pools tosave on gas and parking issues. Another interesting approach for the afternoon is to have dinner inPortsmouth and take the ferry across to the stadium for the game; you are delivered right to theball park and this is enjoyable and avoids the traffic on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel; or havedinner in Norfolk and attend. If you want more information on the dinner/ferry approach, give Billor Carolyn Gilbert a call (757-871-1086 or 757-871-3009). Either way you decide to go, this evening is fun and fellowship, so come and join us.6

Meet KW’s New Director of MusicMissionKirkWood warmly welcomes Drew Lusher, our new Director of Music, to ourfellowship!Drew is the third of six children born to Mary Jo and Timothy Lusher in Oneida,New York. His dad is an engineer and his mom works for the County Government.Drew grew up attending the Catholic Church and had a fascination for churchmusic, which is where he started to love music in general. Later, he beganattending the Episcopal Church and because of the music, he grew to love church, and began to feel a strong call to the priesthood. Before leaving high school, thevocations director for his diocese encouraged him to get a college degree and livesome normal life experiences before becoming a priest.Drew attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where he graduated with a degree in MusicEducation in May 2014. Westminster was founded in 1926 by the Presbyterian Church as a way to professionallytrain musicians to serve churches as Ministers of Music. That term, still used by many churches today, was coined byWestminster’s founder. Drew said he attended Westminster because of its world class choral music tradition andeducation program. As a student there, he frequently sang at Carnegie Hall and with the New York Philharmonic. Healso sang on a PBS Concert Special with Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. Drew says those wonderful experienceshelped shape him as a musician. While at Westminster he started the process for priesthood through the Episcopal Church of Princeton University. However, because there are so many people at that time leaving the Catholic Church and joining the Episcopal Churchto become priests, the diocese set an age minimum of 26 to avoid ordaining more priests than positions available.Drew was only 22.After graduation, Drew applied for teaching jobs and through his college mentor (who knows the Grafton High Schoolband director), he wound up as the Grafton High School Choir Director. He teaches five classes comprised of threechoirs with about 150 students.Drew said he believes in fate and he knows Grafton is where he’s meant to be. He still thinks he will enter the priesthood someday, because he still definitely feels the call. However, he says teaching is a ministry in itself, and whilethere are hard days for sure, there is no greater joy than being a part of a student’s life.Drew’s hobbies include running (he was a long distance cross-country runner in high school), reading (heparticularly likes biographies), travelling (he’s planning a winter trip this year with friends to see Macchu Picchu inPeru), photography, painting, and studying the science and process of wine making. He enjoys visiting vineyardsbecause each one has a different atmosphere and unique taste to their wine.Drew said, “I would like to thank KirkWood for being so kind and welcoming. I am very happy at Kirkwood and, liketeaching, I know it won't always be easy, but everything we do is to glorify God, and what a blessing it is to be able todo that at such a warm community as KirkWood.”Drew, we are very happy to have you as our Director 7of Music and we look forward to many years of a specialrelationship with you!

Missing andNew FolksWhen you look at the frontof our church bulletin youwill see the phrase “AChristian Community Knowing, Loving, and ServingChrist, to make Him Knownto all”. Ways we can allwork to achieve this visionfor KirkWood are availableto us each week and eachSunday morning.First, when you miss seeingsomeone on Sunday, or youwonder why someone islisted under “Illnesses andConcerns,” give them a calland let them know you missthem or that you will keepthem in prayer for healingand recovery – this is part ofbeing a supportive, caringChristian Community, asChrist teaches us.Also, when you see someoneyou don’t know or who maybe a new visitor, make aneffort to greet them andwelcome them to KirkWood. This is another way we canbe a welcoming andnurturing community andbring more people to afellowship for serving andlearning more about Christ. In other words, we can allbe missionaries for Christevery week and everySunday without travelingafar!KW Dining PartnersKirkWood SilverIsaw an article in the Daily Press written by Cynthia Davis, a member ofHarbor Pointe Community Church in Hampton, in which she stated, “Ithink Jesus knew that the best and most effective route into people’shearts is to meet them exactly where they are; to spend an evening in theirworld, talking, laughing, and enjoying a shared experience.” To that end, pleaseconsider joining us for any or all of the upcoming Kirkwood Dining Partnersactivities.Kirkwood Dining Partners is for anyone who enjoys being with fellow Kirkwoodians. We enjoy going to restaurants together and/or eating in each other’shomes in groups of 6 or 8. It’s a great way to meet new people and get to knowothers better. We plan on having the same format as last year –planned events in restaurants for September, October and November, then we’ll get together inDecember to plan for January, February, March andApril, which is either dining in people’s homes or atrestaurants. The umbrella of all these events isKirkwood Dining Partners – sometimes we eat outand sometimes we eat in, but the fellowship, fun and food are constants! There will be sign-up sheets for the eating out events in the narthex andreminders in the bulletin beginning in late August. We’ll sign up for the ‘eating in’ portion later in the year. For the ‘eating in’portion the host provides the entrée and the others bring salad, vegetables anddessert. The groups change monthly, maximizing interaction with a wide rangeof our Kirkwood family. All are welcome and encouraged to share time with your church family. If youhave any questions, please see Arba Williamson (awillia114@aol.com) or CindyWilliamson (cwillic114@gmail.com) or ask anyone who participated last year –we had a lot of fun and meaningful conversations.Tentative dates and plans are on p. 12. Please watch the bulletin and youre-mail for final plans.(Continued on p. 12)8

KW, You Look Mahvelous!!Property & FacilitiesProperty and Facilities (P&F) committee chairs are Nate Nickerson and Roger Crone. Our group is involved in keeping our church, property and landscape in top shape to best reflect God's blessings to allwho pass by or visit. Please feel free to pass along to Roger or Nate any concerns or observations youmay have regarding our church's facilities or if you are interested in volunteering to get involved in P&F.Summer's end is fast approaching and the start of a new school year and busy fall season loom near! Here aresome P&F committee notes:Repairs Summary:Besides coordinating landscape clean-ups and lawn-mowing, Property &Facilities committee works a variety of facilities issues. For example, KirkWood's original structure is over 25years old. Consequently, over the past two years we have replaced a water heater, toilet/plumbing components, various HVAC components & systems, and fire and alarm system’s components. In the spring we replaced another water heater, an older compressor and additional HVAC components for the Admin/Narthex area and acity-mandated water outflow preventer valve set on the property. We had planned to re-seal and stripe theparking lot this summer ( 9 years since last re-seal), but contractors now indicate it would be best to re-paveto get a longer life and be more cost-efficient in the long run. So P&F will review options for paving/costs, etc.Through the efforts of folks like Roger Crone, Jerry Deaton, Jim Birch, Tom Briggs and Kirk Reno we are able tobring experienced insight into addressing emergent facilities repairs. It is a solid team and we would welcome you to be part of it.P&F Call-outs:Thanks to the following folks who are always working behind the scenes: Jerry Deaton for planting new plants in the sign garden bed for the summer. Janet Deaton, Robin Clifford, Helene Watson, and Janet Knight for periodically weeding the sign garden bed. Scott Shoun for leveling a concrete slab on the walkway and adding downspout extenders to reduce rainerosion. Roger Crone for coordinating a parking lot pavement vendor estimate. Kirk Reno for replacing 12 eco-fluorescent light tubes. A KW volunteer for removing the downed tree near the Sanctuary.Enjoy the idle summer days of August. The next P&F meeting is August 11th at 7 p.m. in thekitchen or Narthex area. Come see what is going on. All are welcome!9

Pictorial Directory Plans & ProgressCongregational CareThanks to all of you who have made our KISS (keep it simple stupid) version of a pictorialdirectory a success! Our plan is to include the photos in our next issue of the KirkWoodPresbyterian Church Address & Telephone Directory which is scheduled for reissue inJanuary 2016. All photos will be in black and white and will either appear next to yourdirectory information or may be part of an addendum to the directory. Our program allows acouple of options, and we have not yet determined exactly the layout wewill prefer. Please be aware that your photos (as well as your directoryinformation) WILL NOT be published on the internet. These photos arestrictly for our congregation. Another question that has been asked is ifwe can provide individuals with a copy of their photo. The photos aredigital photos (not hard copies) and it would be quite time consumingto extract an individual photo and email it to each of you. We ask foryour understanding that we just cannot fulfill such a request at thistime. If you have any questions regarding our plan or progress gettingit done, please don’t hesitate to contact Doreen utiful New Bulletin BoardCongregational CareTake a moment as you are walking into the church from the parking lotand look at the beautiful bulletin board that Marsha Coverdale has createdfor Congregational Care! She has done a wonderful job and given us a veryattractive and informative display. A big thank you to Marsha!10

Upcoming Stephen Minister TrainingCongregational CareA meeting will be held in August to provide information on the training requirements tobecome a Stephen Minister and also answer any questions. Please watch the Bulletin for thedate and time. In order to become a Stephen Minister, an individual must complete 50hours of Christian caregiving training. The plan is to begin the training sessions in mid- tolate-September. If you have not already talked with Regina Harris about becoming aStephen Minister, please call her at 329-5746. We already have four congregation memberswho have expressed interest in becoming Stephen Ministers and would like to have a fewmore join the group.Update on New Small Groups RequestedCongregational CareEarlier this year we had two requests to form new small groups: one for Widows and Widowers(the “W and W”) and one for divorced folks. We have tried to start the small group for widows andwidowers and have had two meetings, one in May( five attended) and one in July(two attended). Itseems we may need to reconsider the meeting day and time for this Wand W small group, so we arerequesting that interested people contact the church office and let us know what days and timesare acceptable for you. With this information, we will try to find the day andtime matching the most schedules. We hope that this small group mightconsider eventually being able to offer support to people who have recentlylost their spouse, in addition to being a good fellowship and study experience. The small group for divorced folks has not been formed yet but we know that we have a considerable number of people at KirkWood who are divorced. Two people have expressed interest. Wewill be contacting additional folks to see if we can have at least 5 or 6 folks to start. If you are interested in joining this small group, please contact the church office and leave your name and number. We understand that such a small group can be a valuable resource for people struggling throughsuch major life changes.11
