A YEAR IN REVIEWThroughout history, passionate individuals havebrought about change by speaking up for thosewho cannot speak for themselves.CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) makesa difference by providing dedicated volunteers toadvocate in court for our most vulnerable children– those who are in the child protection system. Our volunteer-centered organization is fueled bya remarkably diverse group of people who sharethe same vision: a world in which every abused orneglected child is given the opportunity to thrive in asafe and loving home.CASA makes a differenceSince its creation by a juvenile court judge in Seattle,Court Appointed Special Advocates has become one ofthe most effective programs of its kind. It is a uniqueblend of private support, public need and the kind ofCASA annual report 2016 Final10112016.indd 4people power that comes from more than 300 localvolunteers all committed to the rights of every child inthe foster care and child welfare system in our county.Throughout our twenty-two years of service toabused and neglected children, the community—from individuals to corporations to communitypartners—has responded passionately to this vision,so we continue to set our goals to expand to meetthe needs of the children. By fiscal year end 2016,more volunteers and more donors than ever wereinvolved with and invested in our organization. Weprovided intensive advocacy to a record 487 children, more than double the number of children servedjust five years ago. CASA of Santa Barbara Countyis an expression of our community’s will to carefor its children. Thanks to your support, the goal ofproviding a CASA to every child who needs one iswithin reach.10/11/2016 4:30:39 PM

“If we want a better worldwe need to start somewhere, even if it is with just onechild.”We are inspired every day by ourvolunteers and the community supportingCASA and the children we serve. OUR CHILDRENDecember is a specialmonth for nine-yearold Aiden.* Not becauseof the holidays, which bringwith them yummy food anda few new toys to play with, but because it is his birthdaymonth.Every year, his parentsthrow a celebratory party attheir three-bedroom homeloaded with decorations, cardsand presents. They each splitduties: Dad excitedly invitesall of Aiden’s friends and Momorders a big cake decoratedwith Aiden’s favorite colors—blue and red.*Name and photograph are fictitious.CASA annual report 2016 Final10112016.indd 1610/11/2016 4:30:47 PM

“It’s the best!” he alwaysexclaims to guests, with asmile from ear to ear.But Aiden’s birthdaywasn’t always filled withsuch happiness. Though hedoesn’t remember it, Aidenwas born into abuse andneglect. He experienced bothfor the first time within thehospital’s four walls thevery moment he was born;Aiden’s birth mother wasa drug addict who abuseddrugs during her pregnancy. While still in the hospital, Aiden was referredto Child Welfare Services(CWS). He later moved inwith his birth father, whoCASA annual report 2016 Final10112016.indd 17was separated from hismother at the time. Formore than three years,Aiden endured a tumultuous existence. His parentscontinued to have an onagain/off again relationshipwith one another, feedingoff each other’s substanceabuse and addictions andproviding an unsafe livingenvironment for Aiden.Shortly after Aidenturned four, he was foundwith bruises and scarsacross his body. His socialworker knew the little boyneeded a Court AppointedSpecial Advocate (CASA)to ensure his urgent needswere met. That is how Aidenmet Justine.Justine devoted her timeto Aiden and never gave up.She tirelessly advocated forhis well-being, confidentthere was a loving home outthere for him.And Justine was right.Within a year, Aiden wasadopted by a couple namedBill and Suzanne whocontinuously work hard toensure he has a bright andstable future. Now Aiden gets to be justa kid, enjoying each yearthat passes by.Other than December,October is his favoritemonth. Not because ofHalloween, with all of themake-believe, dressing upand candy, but becauseof one other very specialreason. When asked why,Aiden gleefully exclaims,“That’s when I met myCASA!” n10/11/2016 4:30:47 PM
