SECTION 1General DescriptionThe RVA801/LCA301 is intended formeasurement of air velocity and volume flow atreturn grilles, fume hoods, kitchen exhausts, etc.It features a 180-degree rotating head whichfunctions satisfactorily in the 0o and 180opositions. This allows the LCD display to beviewed from the front of the instrument while thehead is oriented with the flow direction. In addition, the instrument measures thetemperature of the air flow.SECTION 2SafetyObserve common sense safety precautionswhen using the RVA801/LCA301. Exercise careto ensure that the instrument does not interferewith any moving equipment or electrical wiring. This instrument is not designed for gas mixturesother than air. Use with explosive and/or otherdangerous gas mixtures is not recommendedand is at the user’s own risk.-5-

SECTION 3About the RVA801/LCA301Installing the BatteryThe RVA801/LCA301 requires a 9-volt battery. The battery is not installed when the instrumentis shipped. Remove the battery cover bypressing on the two lines and sliding downwards.Connect the battery to the flying lead, insert thebattery into the instrument and replace thebattery cover.LCD displayThe instrument will display the velocity, volumeor temperature reading as selected.Auto Shut OffThe RVA801/LCA301 has an auto shut offfeature to help preserve battery life. If no keysare pressed for 3 minutes (5 minutes intemperature mode), the instrument willautomatically turn itself off. This function cannotbe disabled by the user.-6-

SECTION 4Detailed OperationPress the ON\OFF key to turn theRVA801/LCA301 on and off. When theinstrument is turned on, it will power up in themode last used.Mode keyOn/ Off keyEnglish/Metric Unit SelectionRVA801/LCA301 instruments can display Metricor Imperial units. To select metric or imperialunits, press the Mode key while turning on the-7-

unit. Then press the trigger to select the unittype and press the Mode key again to save yoursetting.Measuring Air VelocitySelect velocity using the MODE key if required. In order to take a velocity reading, hold therotating vane in the airstream noting the flowdirection arrow on the instrument head. Keep thevane in the airstream for about five secondsbefore pressing the trigger key to take a reading. This enables the vane anemometer to reachsteady speed and the average reading will bemore accurate. To take a single reading, press the trigger keymomentarily. The instrument will display themeasured value.Press and hold the trigger key to take a sweep,or time-averaged, reading. The sweep readingwill update approximately every second. Releasethe trigger key to stop the sweep measurementand display the average value.Measuring Air VolumeThe operation for air volume measuring is thesame as air velocity. To calculate air volume, theair velocity and area (duct, grille size or Air Conedata) are required. The RVA801/LCA301rotating vane anemometer allows the user to-8-

enter the area into the instrument and get directvolume flow readings. To measure air volume, determine the crosssectional area of the duct or grille for which thevolume flow rate is required. If working in metricunits, calculations must be in m2. If working inImperial units, calculations must be in ft2. Switchthe instrument to “Area ” mode and observe thearea figure displayed from the memory. If thenew area required is larger than the onedisplayed press the trigger to increase thedisplayed area to the calculated figure. If thearea is less than the figure displayed push theMode Button to change to “Area -” mode andpress the trigger to reduce the displayed area tothe calculated figure. When the correct area hasbeen displayed use the Mode key to select therequired “Vol” mode.Note: If the area is entered incorrectly, thevolume flow rate reading will also be incorrect. The last area value will be retained in thememory even when the instrument isswitched off.Low Battery IndicationWhen the "BAT" icon appears, theRVA801/LCA301 has about 60 minutes ofbattery life remaining. If the battery is notreplaced, measurement accuracy will decrease.-9-

Serial Number DisplayThe instrument’s serial number can be verifiedby holding both the trigger and mode key whenswitching the unit on.SECTION 5Care, Maintenance and ServicePlease return the Product Registration Cardimmediately. This allows us to send servicereminders, special offers, and importantinformation about your product. Remove batteries from instrument if notused for an extended period of time. Do not bend or touch blades; accuracy willbe affected. Do not immerse in liquids. Do not drop the instrument. Use carrying case for storage, transport, and protection from dust. Use a clean damp cloth to wipe theinstrument case. Do not wipe the blades.Service Return ProcessReturn the RVA801/LCA301 for service in casethe instrument was dropped, blades were-10-

deformed, or liquid spilled on the instrument, particularly the blades. Before sending your instrument for calibration orrepair, obtain a Return Material Authorization(RMA) number by visiting our website athttp://rma.tsi.com or contacting customerservice. When obtaining an RMA number, youwill also learn the cost of service or calibrationand receive shipping instructions.Appendix AVolume Flow Rate MeasurementsUsing Air ConesIf Air Cones are used to measure the volumeflow rate, the area entered in the instrumentneeds to be related to the 100 mm vanediameter. The correct value to be entered can be found inthe Air Cone manual that comes with the cones(see side pocket of the carrying case).-11-
