CONDITION & CHALLENGESThe Agri products can be broadly classified into following groups:Grains- Cereals & Pulses, Oilseeds & Spices, Fresh Fruits & Vegetables,Honey, Sugar, Cotton, Feedstuff & others.Majority of the farm produce comes from small farm holdings of 2acres or less. Crop Quality uniformity is major challenge at farm leveland productivity tooDiverse farm practices, varied grades & qualities of produce reach themarket.Lack of traceability of produce to the farm.Good farming practices & product specific controls necessary acrossthe product chain.10
CONTROLFor Total Quality in Agri exports, product specific controls need tobe practiced by all the stake holders responsibly starting with goodpractices at Farm to Fork.For example, following controls at different stages need to beadopted for maintaining the quality of rice, a major commoditycurrently being exported: Good farm practices. Control of moisture levels in harvested at farm & at factory. Quality mapping of paddy by physical & chemical testing withidentity of source region. Fumigation of paddy and storage in conditions suitable towithstand all types of weather. In-process quality checks during production processes like dehusking, milling, de-stoning, polishing, sortex cleaning withsegregation of grades & varieties.11
QUALITYFollowing system be adopted to achieve the objective of total qualityin Basmati exports: Quality mapping of paddy by physical & chemical testing withidentity of source region. Selection of paddy stock suitable for the destination. In-process quality control during production processes. Fumigation, cleaning, grading and segregation of material. Representative sampling of production with statistical techniques& applicable standards. Market specific verification of quality – Physical & Chemicaltesting at qualified laboratories. Packing of lots found conforming & dispatch. Use TPI’s as applicable, for Quality Assurance, independentverification & Certification.12
