PREFACEIt has been nine years since the first edition of this bookwas published (I can hardly believe it), and the size of thissecond edition attests to the great amount of new information Ihave received during these years from Miller relatives. So much so,in fact, that I have regrettably had to omit from this secondedition the Section on the Watauga County Meat Camp Millers whichappeared in the first edition and for which I received from thatgroup of descendants (especially John O. Hawkins, Carl Lewis, andJames Miller) so much information that it would have taken up over100 more pages here. So many new friends have provided me withinformation and I am sure that I will leave out many, but especiallywish to thank the following:Mrs. Agnes Whitaker, Mrs. JoanneWeaver, Mrs. Virginia Childers, Mrs. Janice Brown, Mrs. BarbaraDierking, Mrs. Hazel Stanley, Mary Atkinson, Gladys Donoghue,Nancy Verbout, Ola Welch Weaver, Dorothy Cascadden, Floyd Welch,Ruth Bata, Anne Patrick, Thomas Newman, Thelma Meyer, CatherineHargreaves, Juanita Bledsoe Miller, and so many others. All of thosepeople who provided information for the first edition of this bookare again to be thanked: Eleanor Baker Reeves, Matilda Hampton,Ellis Thompson, Lester and Lura Clark, Retha Edmondson, Junior andRuth Clark, Jim and Blanche Rash, Ruth Clark, Carrie Bare, Vernieand Dare Hart, Elizabeth Stevens Lyle, Ethel Davis Lyle, Rev. andMrs. A. I think my father wasproud of this book, and it is to honor his memory and that of allthe wonderful Millers that I have tried to document our historyas best as I could. I am sure that there are still errors and muchmore that could be added. But every word of this book was writtento show that we are all brothers. There is no place like AsheCounty, North Carolina--and nobody like Ashe Countians.NUMBERING SYSTEMEach person in each genealogy has been given an individual number. If asign appears before the number, the reader is referredto the appearance of that number further in the genealogy wheremore information is given.
