Rube Goldberg Device Rube Goldberg DeviceAn overly complex device that performs aridiculously simple task Created by Rube Goldberg to display theingenuity and inefficiency of mankind Process ControlUse of computers to control the actionsperformed in the machine Responds to variable conditions

The Task Our task is to raise a target bearing thesuspect’s face and then shoot a ping pong ballat it with a pressurized gun

What We Used Programming and Software Nichrome Wires ThermistorsPower Supplies MotorsRelaysInfrared Emitters/Sensors

Programming and Software Basic Functions Provides checkpointsthroughout the processStarts and stops certainprocessesTwo main functions: Measures resistance changeSupplies powerDAQ Data Acquisition UnitIntermediate devicebetween computer andrelaysContains two multiplexerswith ten relays eachComputer Program Written in High-Tech Basic (HTBASIC)Computer commands:- OUTPUT @io-path; “command”- cls x - opn x - two x - TIMEDATE- REM textstatement !text- REPEATprogram statementsUNTIL condition

What You’ll See !The process you will see is long and complicated. Many hours were put into making it as complexas possible. And it’s all to apprehend this suspect:

Remote Control MINI Cooper The remote control is hard-wired to the computercontrol which signals the MINI Cooper to goforward and left, allowing it to travel a circularpath.

Jack-in-the-Box This startingmodule ismanually crankeduntil the boxopens. The lid holds acircuit closed, butwhen open, itbreaks the circuitand stops thecurrent.

Water Pump Car windshieldcleaner fluid pumpSubmerged in a tubfilled with waterComputer signals thepump to startfollowing the jack-inthe-boxPumps water from thetub onto toilet paperToilet paper weakens, and a weight falls intothe tub

Ramp and Block When the weightfalls, it pulls a stringwhich raises the rampWhen the ramp israised, a roll of ducttape careens downAt the bottom of theramp, it knocks over ablock, pulling a stringdownwards

Marble Ramp----String attachedfrom block torampWhen the blockfalls, string pulledand ramp liftedGravity causes thelarge marble toroll down inclineThe large marbledrops from firstramp to secondramp

Pachinko Machine The large marble traveling on a ramp hits three smallmarbles, and all four go onto the pachinko boardAt the end of the pachinko board, the marbles fallinto a funnel and start down another ramp The three small marbles fallthrough a hole on the ramp, which activate the catapult. The larger marble goes on totopple the dominos.

Dominos and Infrared Sensor The large marblefrom the chute hitsthe first domino, causing the dominosto fall in successionThe last domino fallsdown and blocks aninfrared sensor, sending a signal tothe computer

Baking Soda/Vinegar Reaction The computer responds to the IRsensor by activating a motorThe motor lifts one end of a PVCtube filled with sodiumbicarbonateThe NaHCO3 is dumped into abeaker with vinegar, causing areaction to take placeThe reaction causes a change inresistance in the beaker, and thecomputer control senses thischange and starts the nextmodule

Raising the Target The computer activatesanother motor which windsup a string that raises oneend of a container holdingmarblesThese marbles fall into apan which is attached to apulley system above, raisinga target on the other end ofthe stringThe raised target hits aswitch that connects acircuit

The Catapult The marbles land inbasketThe back of unit fallsdown, releasing hookThe weight in thefront falls, launchingthe ping-pong ball bypendulum motion.

Zip Line, Pail, and Salt WaterCircuit The catapult tugs astring which causes thepail to descend thewireThe pail knocks over agraduated cylindercontaining salt waterinto a beakerThe salt watercompletes a circuit

Blow-up Car and Flames The motor is rewired so thatwhen the circuit is complete, power from battery drives themotor forwardThe car is set to “crash” intonext stepThe center of the cardboard isdepressed when the carcrashes into the boxTwo flaps, each hinged onedge of the platform, springup in response to pressurefrom the box

Pyrotechnics Denatured Alcoholfumes insideNichrome wire isapplied 12VDCand heats upAlcohol ignitesand a thermistorsenses theincreasedtemperature

The Marble Chute A nichrome wire heats up when current isapplied, burning through a stringA small mass pulls the string down, releasing themarblesThe marbles roll down the four tracks, finallylanding in a tub

Towing Car The electric motoris rewired so thatwhen the circuit iscomplete, a batterypowers the motorto run backwardsA decline rampmakes up formotor’s insufficientpower by addinggravitational force

Balloon/Flask Reaction The towing cartugs a string sothat a bakingsoda-filled balloonis pulled uprightThe baking sodafalls into a flaskthat containsvinegar, initiatinga reactionCO2 inflates theballoon

Marble Seesaw The balloon liftsone end of seesawso that marbles atone end roll towardthe other endA scale is set sowhen all themarbles drop into aplastic container, aweight sensor isactivated

The Pressure Gun The computer triggers acompressor to pressurizethe “tank” at 30 psiThe dowel is manuallypushed in, releasing arubber sealAir rushes to the top pipeand ejects the ping pongballThe target is hit

Conclusion The target is hit and the perpetrator is apprehended. How do you like them apples, Surace?
