Spartanburg Post 28 first fielded an American Legion Baseball Team in 1933 and sincethen close to 2,000 baseball players have tried out to be part of our program. The program hasbeen successful developing young men into patriotic citizens. Many of our young men havegone on to play at colleges and universities and after graduating pursued prominent careers andraised families. Many have served in the US military and some even given their life in theservice of our nation. Over the past 89 years, life has a way of interweaving them into societyand many make that difference that improves our way of life. Some through hard work and abit of luck made it to the Major Leagues and realizing their childhood dream.Wayne Tolleson is one of our ball players who made it to the Major Leagues and played10 years. Wayne played American Legion Baseball for Post 28 in 1973-74. Post 28 contactedWayne this year and asked him to revisit his years playing baseball and to be our guest speakerat our monthly legion meeting.Wayne was born in Spartanburg, attended Spartanburg High School and is a graduate ofWestern Carolina University (WCU 1974-78), where he was a two-sports athlete, playingbaseball and football. At WCU, Wayne set ten season and career records, earning All SouthernConference honors at shortstop in 1977 and 1978. In 1978, he was named Southern ConferenceBaseball Player of the Year, SoCon Athlete of the Year. As a star football player at WCU, hecaught 105 passes for 1,747 yards and 14 touchdowns over two seasons. Wayne was namedAll-Southern Conference wide receiver after leading both the conference and the NCAADivision 1 in receiving in 1977 with 73 catches for 1,101 yards and seven touchdowns. He wasenshrined in the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 and selected to the SoCon Hallof Fame in 2020.In 1981, Wayne broke into the major leagues with the Texas Rangers. He was tradedafter the 1985 season to the Chicago White Sox and then to the New York Yankees in 1986. Heretired from baseball in 1990 and fell back on his education and had a successful businesscareer. He now instructs and mentors young baseball players to pursue their passion forbaseball.Wayne is an accomplished speaker and Post 28 had the pleasure of hearing his life storyduring one of their monthly meetings. Playing American Legion baseball was a distancememory, but he could still remember his coach Tommy Owens, afternoon practices, working aconstruction job, and following a team win, rewarded with a trip to the Beacon Drive-in. It wasabsolutely a special time which built a strong foundation and mindset for the rest of his life. His baseball dream was realized during his first major league game, “the feeling was like noother – you know you arrived.”Wayne attributes all his life successes to his faith, and the support of his Christian family. His wife Kim and two sons Steven and Clint are his greatest gifts from God.Wayne sums it all up with explaining that on and off the field. “Life is full of battles.”Winning the Battle is dependent on your Attitude and Trust.B - Battles – “I fought my battles on my knees.”A - Attitude – very important in your approach to winning.T - Trust – in God and the people around you.

It’s like déjà vu all over again.Yogi Berra
