WEEKLY RESOURCESSunday, March 21Scripture MemoryProgramSee page 2 for details.LINKSThe Last SupperOur teaching this week will emphasize when Jesus washed the disciples’feet at the Last Supper. Our story starts when Judas Iscariot, one of theTwelve, had approached the religious leaders. For 30 pieces of silver, Judasagreed to betray Jesus. Hundreds of years before Jesus’ birth, Davidprophesied the Messiah would be betrayed by a close friend—one whobroke bread with Him. (Ps. 41:9) Jesus knew Judas Iscariot’s truemotivations from the moment Jesus called him to be a disciple. Jesus’death and resurrection was God’s plan from the very beginning.During the Passover meal on the night He was betrayed, Jesus didsomething very unusual. Knowing that His death was near, Jesus washedHis disciples’ feet—even the feet of Judas. Jesus set forth an example oflove and humility for His disciples to mirror in their own actions towardseach other. After Judas left to betray Jesus, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man isglorified, and God is glorified in Him”. He told His disciples He wouldprepare a place for them, promised that the Holy Spirit would come tothem, warned them about the trials they would face as His followers, andencouraged them through prayer. Jesus also prayed for all who wouldbelieve the gospel from their testimony. Then Jesus led them to thegarden where He was betrayed and arrested. In the Old Testament, God made a covenant—or promise—with Hispeople. He gave them commandments to follow so they could live in rightrelationship with Him. God’s people broke the covenant. They didn’t obeyGod, and they didn’t love Him. Jesus made a new covenant by dying on thecross. He brought forgiveness and made the way for people to know andlove God again. When believers participate in the Lord’s Supper, they remember the lastnight of Jesus’ life, when He prepared to take God’s wrath upon His sinlessshoulders. Believers also proclaim His death and resurrection until Hereturns for His church, like He promised. Jesus was welcomed as King but less than one weeklater was crucified by the people. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection made it possiblefor people to have a pure relationship with God.Romans 6:6-96For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be renderedpowerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, 7 since a person who has died is freed fromsin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him, 9 because we know thatChrist, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Bible Story: The Triumphal EntryMatthew 21:1-17; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-19 Read the bolded text for younger kids.It was the time of year that the Israelites celebrated Passover. Many Israelites had traveled toJerusalem to remember what God had done when He rescued His people from slavery in Egypt.Jesus and His disciples traveled to Jerusalem, too. When they neared Bethphage (BETH fayj) andBethany near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of His disciples ahead into a village. “As soon asyou enter the village,” Jesus told them, “you will find a young donkey tied there. No one has eversat on it. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone says to you ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lordneeds it.’” Jesus was going to fulfill a prophecy by the prophet Zechariah that said, “Look, yourKing is coming to you, gentle, and mounted on a donkey.”The disciples did as Jesus asked. As they untied the donkey, its owners said to them, “Why are youuntying the donkey?” “The Lord needs it,” they said. Then they brought the donkey to Jesus, threwtheir robes onto the donkey, and helped Jesus get on it. People were spreading their robes alongthe road, and others spread palm branches cut from the fields. The whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miraclesthey had seen. “The King who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One. Peace in heavenand glory in the highest heaven! Hosanna!” The word hosanna means “save now.” The peopleknew Jesus was their promised King! Some of the Pharisees, the religious teachers, told Jesus, “Teacher, tell your disciples to be quiet!”Jesus answered, “If they did not praise Me, the rocks would praise Me!”Jesus went to the temple complex in Jerusalem and drove out everyone buying and selling in thetemple. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were sellingdoves. He quoted the prophet Isaiah and said, “My house will be called a house of prayer for allnations. But you are making it into a den of thieves!”While Jesus was in the temple complex, people who were blind and people who were lame came toHim. The blind and lame were not allowed to worship in the temple. Jesus healed them. The chief priests and scribes saw the miracles that Jesus performed and heard the children saying,“Hosanna to the Son of David!” or “Our king is here! Our king is here!” Even the kids knew Jesuswas the promised King. The scribes and priests were angry and asked Jesus, “Do you hear whatthese children are saying? They are saying you are a king!”“Yes,” Jesus replied. “The Psalmist said: You have prepared praise from the mouths of children andnursing infants.” Jesus left them and went to the town of Bethany to spend the night.Christ Connection: During Jesus’ triumphal entry, the people welcomed Him as King. Jesus was theMessiah spoken about by the prophet Zechariah: “Look, your King is coming to you; He is righteousand victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9).3
