H e finished his high school educa tion in 1910, and graduated from the Amer ican Institute of Banking in 1915. He contin ued his post graduate work under the LaSalleExtention and the Alexander Hamilton In stitute.James A. Bankston’s military career beganon his entrance in the First Officers TrainingSchool, Fort McPherson, Ga., May 12, 1917to August 14, 1917, from which he wasgraduated as a Second Lieutenant. H e waspromoted to First Lieutenant in the 326thInfantry, 82nd Division. H e saw servicethrough the Marbarche, St. Mihiel, and Argonne offensives.He was a charter member of the CharlesD. Montgomery Post No. 1, Atlanta, andhas served as Department Treasurer sinceJA M E S A. B A N K ST O N , T reasurerlanta, Ga., on October 22, 1919 to MissSarah Bess Clement. They have two children,James W alker Bankston and Sarah AnnBankston.JU N IO R BASEBALLThis feature of Community Service, adopt ed and promoted by the National Organiza tion of The American Legion, was activelysponsored by the Georgia Department in1928 under the leadership of Usher T. Winslett of Macon. As Chairman of Junior Base ball he endeavored to have an Athletic Offi cer appointed in each of the CongressionalDistricts. Unselfishly devoting himself to the in terest of the W ar orphans of the W orldW ar, his plans for the education of theselittle ones, has been adopted by many States,and each year finds additional States provid ing legislation to carry forward the workwhich has been so religiously promoted andunselfishly labored for by General Peter C.Harris.General H arris is a member of the JosephS. Brewster Post No. 86 of Cedartown. Hewas Chairman of the Committee on the Edu cation and Vocational Training of W ar O r phans, Department of Georgia, 1927-1929E D U C A T IO N O F W AR ORPH A N SR ESO LU TIO NThe Twelfth and most important resolutionadopted at the convention was one pertain ing to the Education and Vocational Trainingof W ar Orphans, and commending the un flagging interest General Peter C. H arris hastaken in this worthy work. The resolution isas follows:W h e r e a s , The National Executive Com mittee of The American Legion, through aspecial committee composed of M ajor Gen eral P. C. H arris, Chairman, Dr. John J.Tigert and Captain M. S. Eddy, early in1927 promulgated a plan for providing col lege education and vocational training fororphans of the W orld W ar; andW h e r e a s , In furtherance of said educa tional program the Georgia Department inits 1927 Convention adopted a resolution ap-

A contract was entered intowith Kabler Brothers Company, MountMorris, Illinois, by which the Departmentcommitted itself for a year; the provisionsof which the payment of 1650.00 to thiscompany and the Department reserving therights to solicit and collect for advertisingmatter. The American Legion Auxiliary ofthe Department of Georgia was invited toparticipate in this venture.This magazine was a credit to the D epart ment, more news of the activities of the Postscould be carried than in the “Adjutant’sLetters” which was merely a makeshift untilthe Department could establish a bettermeans of disseminating news.The first issue of the “Georgia Legion naire” was the September 1928 number.Prior to this time The Auxiliary had editeda leaflet known as the “Gala News” , but up on the publication of an official magazine ofthe Department “Gala News” was consoli dated with and formed part of “The Geor gia Legionnaire.”In September, 1930, the “Georgia Legion naire” was converted into a newspaper.proving and adopting the program for theState of Georgia; andW h er ea s , The Georgia School of Tech nology, Emory University, Oglethorpe Uni versity and other institutions of higher learn ing in this state have generously provided freescholarships for all eligible war orphans inthis state; andW h er ea s , A t the last session of Congress,Senator William J. H arris and CongressmanW right of Georgia, successfully sponsored toenactment the H arris-W right Bill, providingadditional Federal compensation for war or phans desiring college or vocational educa tion; andW h er ea s , At the last session of the Geor gia Legislature, Senator Erie Cocke and oth ers were instrumental in having certain pro posed legislation providing for the establish ment of State scholarships for war orphansgiven a privileged status at the next sessionof the General Assembly of G eorgia; andW h er ea s , Comrade General Peter C.H arris, Comrade M . S.
