Mary CalorioPresident, MMHLAFrom thePresident:What I Learned On My Day On The HillPancakes and politics? Yes, it works. Wayne Tabor, Chuck Pinkowski, Mohamad Hakimian, and I attended the TennesseeHospitality Day on the Hill Tuesday representing the MMHLA.DID YOU KNOW? On an average day in Tennessee, tourist spending generated 2.9 million in daily state & local taxes. That means, on average, each household in Tennessee pays 258 less in state & local taxes as a result of taxes generated by tourist activity in Tennessee.Despite the 2009 recession, tourist spending in Tennessee was relatively stronger than overall consumer retail spending. (When statewide tourist spending is compared to overall consumer retail spending in Tennessee from 2008 to 2009, overall retail spending decreased by 11.3%, while tourist spendingdecreased by only 7.8% during the same period.) On an average day in Tennessee, tourists spend 35.4 million in the following businesses:· 11.4 million in restaurants, groceries, & drinking places.· 10.1 million on transportation (air, car, taxi, gas, rentals, etc.).· 5.9 million on hotels & lodging (motels, cabins, campgrounds, vacation homes/condos, bed & breakfast inns, etc.).· 4.1 million on retail trade (gifts, clothes, incidental retail, etc.).· 3.9 million on entertainment & recreation (parks, museums, historical sites, amusements, performing arts/shows, golf, fishing, watersports, theme parks, spectator sports, etc.).Yearly 2009 tourist activity in Tennessee.·Generated 12.92 Billion in direct tourist spending.·Produced 4.96 Billion in worker income & paychecks.·Created 396.0 Million in local county taxes.·Created 686.7 Million in State tax revenue.·Generated 170,750 jobs.Okay, I said all of the above to say this: GET INVOLVED. It is sad to say,but a lot of people do not even know who represents them. Know yourlegislators, and the issues that affect your industry, family, and community.Government is You. The you is what is missing from our current government. Too many people are apathetic, but are very vocal when it comesto how the government is run. Did I learn anything? You betcha! Will I goagain? Absolutely! I want change, and it must begin one VOTER at a time.Don’t forget that our April meeting will honor this year’s Stars of the Industry winners. If you have not filled out your nominations, get them in soon, and give the recognition to your staff that they deserve.Peggy Update: Peggy Callahan, our Executive Director, is continuingto recuperate and has been out and about, but keep the positive thoughtsand prayers coming. Hopefully, I will get to see each you at our monthlyluncheon (Marketing Memphis), and please don’t forget to bring a potentialmember with you. So till next month, same time, same place,Study prepared for the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development by the U.S. TravelAssociation; additional analysis by Dr. Steve Morse, Director & Economist, Tourism Institute,University of Tennessee.MaryYellow Cab of Memphis Announces New Website!
