Saint Christopher ChurchTonawanda NYDear Family,Our Gospel Reading today presents us with John’sversion of the very familiar story of the cleansing of thetemple when Jesus turns over the tables of themoneychangers and chases them out of the temple. Weknow the story well and we know that in it Jesus claimsthat He would destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays, referring to His death and resurrection. Thepeople did not understand that until after Hisresurrection. There is, however, a very unique endingto the story in John’s version that is often overlookedbecause we focus on the moneychangers. John tells usthat Jesus did not trust Himself to anyone because Heknew well human nature, as He understood it well. This is a very interesting statement in John’s Gospel ashis main focus was on reminding us of Jesus’ divinity. This particular passage can be viewed in two ways. The first is that Jesus understood human nature wellbecause He as God created human beings and Heunderstands our nature better than we do! But it alsocan be interpreted in a way that suggests that Jesusunderstood human nature because He Himself hadtaken on human nature and was living it! Thus, inthese two short sentences, John teaches that Jesus wasand is both God and Human! Oh the subtleties andintricacies of the Scriptures! We need to always askthe Holy Spirit to be with us and enlighten us we readScripture! We will be surprised by what God haswaiting for us in His Word if we just take the time topray with it! It is often outside the major events inScripture that we find the amazing insights about God’sawesomeness!Praised Be Jesus Christ Now and Forever!!!!Father SteveRELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWSGrade 10 faith formation students please pick up youpackets and assignments. Stay tune for further information. As we enter the third week of Lent the gospel thatsometimes seems so opposite to how we normally think ofJesus. Seeing the money changers and sellers in the Templecourtyard exchanging Roman Coins for Shekels; which wasthe currency used in the Temple to purchase items forsacrifice and the commerce of selling those items such asturtledoves, lambs etc. is in each of the Gospels. John’saccount comes at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry but it isthought that this action caught the attention of theSanhedrin and leads them to eventually call for his deathand Crucifixion.Connecting to the gospelGospel Reading John 2:13-25Jesus drives out the moneychangers from the Temple andsays that he will destroy the temple and raise it up again.Today’s Gospel invites us to reflect upon our worship ofGod. For Jesus and his Jewish contemporaries, the Templewas an important, holy place where they gathered toworship God. The Christian understanding of worship wastransformed in light of Jesus’ Resurrection. In the Christianunderstanding, God is worshiped in a person, the person ofJesus Christ. As we read in today’s Gospel, Jesus is himselfthe Temple that will be destroyed, but in three days Godwill raise him up again. As you gather as a family, talk about places and times whenyou have experienced God’s presence. After hisResurrection, Jesus’ disciples understood that Jesus waspresent with them as they gathered to pray and especiallywhen they gathered to share a meal. Read together today’sGospel, John 2:13-25. Jesus teaches us in today’s Gospelthat he is God’s presence with us. Thank God for Jesus’presence with us, especially in the Sacrament of theEucharist. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.Blessings,REKINDLE THE FIRE WITHINMarie Sajsa, DREOn Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 7 PM, St. ChristopherParish will be celebrating another Praise and Worshipevening. CHRISTOPHEREASTERMASSESBlessings this second week of Lent, dear parish family.Last week the children were actively planning and livingtheir Lenten activities. We, unfortunately, had to saygoodbye to our wonderful 5th grade teacher, Mrs.McNichol (St. Chris alum) and welcomed our new 5thgrade teacher Ms. Heather Staggers. Ms. Staggers and Ms.Middaugh jumped right into 5th grade Stations of theCross preparation under the direction and loving guidanceof Mrs. Sue Lindner. (“Foundation”) began solicitingdonations to its “Upon this Rock” (“UTR”) capital andendowment campaign. The UTR campaign raised funds formany purposes, including soliciting funds for making essentialupgrades to classroom facilities and technology of Christ theKing Seminary (“CKS”), expanding CKS’s role as a center ofretreat and religious celebration, and establishing anendowment fund for CKS. Unfortunately, in early 2020, CKS’sBoard of Trustees determined that CKS would close at the endof the 2020-2021 academic year. CKS’s closure will make itimpossible for the Foundation to use the UTR funds raised forCKS for their original intended purposes. However, underNew York law, when the original purposes for which funds aredonated become impossible to achieve, those purposes can bemodified in a manner consistent with original intent by the NewYork State courts. For many years, CKS provided educationand formation for ordained and lay ecclesial ministers in theDiocese of Buffalo and beyond. Accordingly, the Foundationhas asked the New York State Supreme Court for the County ofErie to approve a modification of the purposes of UTR fundsraised for CKS so that those funds can be used to support theeducation and formation for ordained and lay ecclesial ministryin the Diocese of Buffalo, as determined in the discretion of theFoundation’s Board.CEREAL BOX DONATIONSt. Christopher school students are collectingboxes of cereal to donate.
