BACKGROUNDMarymount University Hospital and Hospice has a strong tradition in Cork. The original hospitalfounded in 1870, was based on Wellington road. In 2011, this healthcare service moved to a purposebuilt facility in Curraheen, Cork. This healthcare facility provides two distinct services: care of theolder person and palliative care. The care of the older person service provides continuing care,respite care and intermediate palliative care. Marymount Hospice provides palliative care to peoplewith cancer and also those with non-malignant disease who require palliation of their symptoms.The palliative care service consists of in-patient care, day care and community palliative care forCork city and county. Marymount Hospice is the designated Specialist Palliative Care service for theregion. As part of the specialist palliative care services there is a dedicated education centre whichcurrently focuses on delivering palliative care education, end-of life care and loss, grief andbereavement.INTRODUCTIONIn 2015, Marymount University Hospital and Hospice celebrates 145 years since its foundation. Thisconference is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the organisation in palliativecare and care of the older person to date, and to raise the profile of the organisation locally,nationally and internationally. This international conference will bring together experts in the fieldof palliative care and care of the older person to learn from and with each other. In 2005, anInternational Expert Advisory Group on Palliative Care for Marymount Hospice and the AtlanticPhilanthropies identified that “Inter-disciplinary training of professionals in palliative care is veryimportant. Palliative care is best provided by a multidisciplinary team approach, and thereforetraining of professionals from various disciplines together is essential. ” Marymount UniversityHospital and Hospice is often referred to as “Marymount” and viewed by those living in Cork asbelonging to the people of Cork. The conference intends to be more than just a one and a half dayprogramme and will include an invitation to people in Cork to attend a number of events takingplace around the conference itself.Marymount University Hospital &Hospice3

AIM OF THE CONFERENCEThe conference aims to bring together multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to explore theunique life journey of patients in palliative care and care of the older person services.TARGET AUDIENCEThe conference will be targeted at multi-professional health carers including doctors, nurses andallied health personnel in palliative care and care of the older person facilities in Ireland, UK andEurope. The marketing will focus on the acute hospitals, community hospitals, hospices and nursinghomes in Ireland. Specific palliative care and care of the older person organisations will also becontacted re promotion of the conference, e.g. the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and PalliativeCare, Irish Association of Palliative Care, Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland(CARDI), Irish College of General Practitioners, All Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association, IrishPractice Nurses Association, etc. In Europe the marketing will be through the European Associationof Palliative Care, and in the United Kingdom the Association for Palliative Medicine of GB and Irl,National Council for Palliative Care etc. A number of specific hospitals and hospices in the UK willalso be targeted, and the univeristy sector will also be included. Our target participation is 300people in attendance at the main conference, with a much larger number for the public events.SPEAKERSThe following speakers have agreed to talk at the conference and a number of otherInternational, United Kingdom and Irish speakers are in the process of being contacted:Professor Eduardo Bruera, University of Texas, HoustonProfessor Tony O’ Brien, Marymount University Hospital and HospiceDr Suzanne Timmons, Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation, School of Medicine,University College CorkMs Christine Longaker, Dzogchen Beara, West Cork.THEME OF THE CONFERENCE: “On Life’s Journey ”The theme of the conference is “On Life’s Journey ” and will explore and examine the unique lifejourney of patients in palliative care and care of the older person as well as those that care for them.The life journey is so important and this journey should be positive, with a focus on quality of lifeand people should be facilitated “to live until they die” (Saunders, 1976). At times that journey maybe turbulent but there must be safety in the haven of palliative care or care of the older personservices, where symptoms are managed, quality of care provided and cognisance taken of thephysical, psychological, sociological and spiritual aspects of individuals.4

VENUEThe conference venue is theRochestown Park Hotel, ConferenceCentre, Cork which has easy accessvia air, rail and road. The EstuarySuite on the top floor will host theconference talks and can take 300delegates when the venue isarranged as classroom style. Thereare six break out rooms includingthe main conference room.The Kiltegan Suite on the ground floor will be used for exhibitors, the poster display and thetea/coffee stations will also be in this room. A middle floor Mezzanine area is also available forfurther exhibition space. There is ample circulating space in the outside atrium.Kiltegan Suite, Rochestown Park HotelOUTLINE OF EVENTSThe conference itself is a one and a half day programme but there are a number of other publicevents also surrounding the conference which will generate significant interest and publicity.Thursday 15th October 2015: Civic Reception in City Hall for all delegates attending the conference isplanned, subject to approval. The programme then moves to the Estuary Suite in the RochestownPark Hotel for a public lecture. This lecture is open to all delegates and members of the public .Friday 16th October 2015: Opening Ceremony followed by plenary and parallel sessions throughoutthe day. Breaks are included to allow participants to view exhibitions stands and posters. AConference Dinner is planned for the evening.On Saturday 17th October 2015: Half-day of conference sessions; afternoon tour of the facilities ofMarymount University Hospital and Hospice or other areas of interest in Cork; Gala Evening event inassociation with the Friends of Marymount, to celebrate Marymount and the first InternationalConference hosted by the organisation (open to the public).6
