Special report LMS Testing SolutionsThe pivotalimportance of testingAs customers continue to demand morefrom their vehicles and regulations fornoise, safety and emissions becomeincreasingly strict, the winning formula forsuccessful product design and a strongbrand image continues to depend on asolid testing process.Product success today is all about getting it right. All of itright, including producing the right car with the rightfunctional performance profile, the right brand andregional market characteristics and the right price tag, allwith the right timing. That is a lot to handle, to say theleast. So what is the magic formula for doing this? To start, there has been a seismic shift toward simulation softwareto streamline today’s platform-based, multi-variant designprocess. Test experts at a major automotive manufacturerestimate that 75 percent of a car’s noise, vibration andharshness (NVH), ride and handling or durabilityperformance is now designed using simulation solutions. They estimate that this will reach 100 percent in a fewyears.More precious than goldToday prototype time is more precious than gold and testcycles simply need to be faster and faster. The trick is tooptimize resources. Ask any test engineer and they willtell you that despite streamlining manpower using moresophisticated simulation processes, the testing trendtoday is to do as much testing as fast as possible with thebest-possible quality. Final validation happens as late inthe development stage as feasible. And nobody wants tohave to troubleshoot during the late prototyping stage. Itis just too expensive. From a testing perspective, all this might sound like amission impossible, but it isn’t if the testing team has theinnovative process, expertise and tools to get the job doneright. This is why successful testing teams count on thebest-possible tools such as dedicated LMS Test.Labsoftware and LMS SCADAS hardware. In this special report, we are proud to present the newestLMS testing solutions. LMS Testing Solutions Special reportFrom sound tosource in minutes10

Special report LMS Testing SolutionsLMS Soundbrush can be used for acoustic troubleshooting, includingsource localization, leak detection and sound propagation. Its 3Dpositioning technology provides new insights into acousticphenomena and the sound flow around a device under test. Theintuitive user interface and fast setup significantly reducesmeasurement time compared to other acoustic measurementtechniques, such as traditional intensity probes or acoustic arraymeasurements.“LMS Soundbrush is an exceptionally userfriendly tool that allows even inexperiencedusers to identify sound sources quickly.”The tightly-woven relationshipbetween acoustics, comfort andsustainability has become increasinglyevident in recent years. Whetherconsumers buy a car, a householdappliance, a laptop or a drill, theproduct’s noise level may influencetheir purchasing decision and willdefinitely impact client satisfaction. This trend, together with the growingawareness about noise pollution andregulatory pressures, has madeacoustic performance a keycompetitive factor in productdevelopment. To support acousticengineers in their increasinglychallenging task, Siemens PLMSoftware developed LMS Soundbrush, the first technology to enable you tovisualize sound in 3D while measuring.Different measurements, varyingtechniquesAnalyzing and improving acousticperformance requires different typesof measurements. Engineers will, forexample, scan the surface of ahydraulic pump to investigate whatfactors contribute to the noise itemits. Leak detection is aboutinvestigating the ability of a casing orhousing to shield noise sourceswithin or outside the unit. To lookinto sound propagation, engineershave to determine how sound sourcesinteract and propagate away from thesource.LMS Soundbrush enables users to visualize sound fields even in complex 3Dvolumes such as car interiors. Engineers used LMS Soundbrush to localize vehicleacoustic leaks both inside and outside on all sides of a car with a detachable roof. While measuring the exterior sound sources, the testers played a pink noise signalinside the car. At the right side of the car, LMS Soundbrush revealed that the soundintensity was highest where the isolation is lowest, i.e. the rear and front wheelbays and the back canvas of the detachable roof. Brushing at the back and top ofthe car confirmed this finding: the sound insulation of the canvas appears to be theleast efficient in blocking the transfer noise.11

LMS Testing Solutions Special reportMeasuring transmission loss on an automotive car door. The range of techniques used for thesemeasurements is just as diverse as themeasurements themselves. A simplemicrophone can help identify criticalpeaks or frequency ranges. To gain deepinsight into the location of sound sources, engineers will rely on more advancedtechniques such as sound intensityVisualize sound source in 3D whilemeasuringThe methods described above areaccurate and efficient, yet they requiresignificant setup time, acousticalexpertise and expensive equipment.A new generation of acoustictroubleshooting tools, such as“This easy, real-time visualization allows animmediate and quick interpretation of themeasurement data, thus enabling efficientacoustic troubleshooting.”probes, which are often combined withscanning techniques that use wireframegrids or even robots. Finally, arraytechniques based on beam forming oracoustic holography methods will helplocalize sources by back propagation ontoa surface.12LMS Soundbrush, is different.LMS Soundbrush is an exceptionallyuser-friendly tool that allows even lessexperienced users to identify soundsources quickly. The setup is simple:click the antenna with an acoustic sensoronto the probe, plug the USB probe andcamera into the PC and launch theintuitive software. In no time, users canstart moving the probe around the testobject to capture acoustic measurementsand visualize all sound sources in 3D.

In the following example, LMS Soundbrush is used to find weak spots(acoustic leaks) in a door trim panel. For the test, a complete car doorwas mounted in a window between two test chambers. Using white noiseexcitation in the reverberant source room, the transmitted noise at thereceiving side of the door was measured, once with and once withoutthe side panel. The comparison yielded some surprising results. Whilethe speaker area and the window were clearly the main sources of noisefor the original door, the measurements indicated that the windowtransmitted more noise after removing the panels. The 3D visualizationrevealed the reason: by removing the door panel, an extra gap is createdin front of the window. This causes a high-vertical component of the noise, which reflects against the window, showing up as if the window weretransmitting more noise. Without the 3D vector visualization, these effectscould not have been discovered and explained. How it worksThe 3D visualization makes LMS Soundbrush a uniqueproduct. At the heart of the solution is the patented opticalposition tracking technology, which is integrated into theprobe and combined with either a sound pressuremicrophone or a 3D sound intensity sensor (antenna). Theantenna contains measurement sensors and embeddedmemory for automatic configuration and calibration. Theprobe has an illuminated 45-millimeter (mm) diametersphere that is continuously tracked by a camera, thusproviding the probe’s positions. Inside, inertial sensors areused to continuously measure its orientation around threeaxes. Together with the positions measured by the cameraand the offset of the antenna sensors stored in theembedded memory, this allows the software to representin real time the acoustic signals at the sensor location interms of both position and orientation.Quick interpretation of the dataThe acoustic measurement data is immediately shown in3D on the computer screen while “brushing” the soundfield. Sound pressure is displayed as point clouds, whileacoustic intensity is visualized as intensity vector plots. Allresulting data can be viewed from any possible angle.Users can freely rotate the test object and zoom in on aspecific hot spot or run a section plane through themeasurement data to make an interpolated contour plot. This easy, real-time visualization allows an immediate andquick interpretation of the measurement data, thusenabling efficient acoustic troubleshooting.13
