Therefore, there will be cases where Neoprene diaphragms willbe the best selection but Teflon , Buna-N, Nordel orpolyurethane balls will be required. This information is compiled from numerous sourcesand believed to be reliable to this date. It is intendedas a guideline to be used with all available informationto determine suitability of elastomers and wettedportions of Wilden pumps for various applications. Wesuggest thorough research which should include knownapplications when determining pump construction. This chart is to be used at your discretion and risk. Theaccuracy of these ratings cannot be guaranteed.CAUTION: Temperature limits are based uponmechanical stress only. Certain chemicals willsignificantly reduce maximum safe operatingtemperatures. Consult engineering guides forchemical compatibility and temperature limits.SELECTING THE BEST DIAPHRAGM FOR A WILDENAIR-OPERATED DOUBLE-DIAPHRAGM PUMPIt must be emphasized that none of these figures areabsolute and are only general guidelines. In the absence of previous experience (which is alwaysthe best guide) diaphragm material may be selectedfrom available resistance charts. The WildenChemical Resistance Guide is compiled fromnumerous reliable sources and cross-checked,however, it is only intended as an additional source ofinformation.SELECTION OF PLASTIC MATERIALSMany factors can affect the chemical resistance ofplastics. These include, but are not limited to, exposuretime, extremes of temperature and pressure, frequencyof temperature and/or pressure cycling, attrition due toabrasive particles, and the type of mechanical stressimposed. The fact that certain combinations of chemicalsand mechanical load can induce stress cracking in manyotherwise chemically resistant materials, both metallicand non-metallic, is of particular significance.Diaphragm life not only depends on a diaphragm’schemical compatibility with the process fluid butalso on the process conditions. These conditions willvary depending on the abrasiveness of your processfluid, temperature, size of diaphragm, pumping media, and lift conditions. Consult your authorized Wildendistributor regarding which diaphragm material willwork best for your application requirements. The chemical/temperature ratings presented are basedon well-processed or well fabricated test specimensbeing essentially resistant to either chemical attack and/or severe swelling which would normally impair theirperformance under moderate mechanical stresses.AS A GENERAL RULE:1. Neoprene or Wil-Flex diaphragms should generally be used unless the chart shows them to beunsatisfactory. Even though Buna-N, Nordel andViton may show “A” ratings, if neoprene or WilFlex have at least a “B” rating, it will probably bethe most economical choice on a “cost of diaphragmsper gallon pumped” basis.Operating parameters are dependent upon theparticular application of polypropylene or PVDFand may differ from those experienced in eitherlaboratory testing or apparently similar field service.Because corrosive fluids or vapors are often mixturesof various individual chemicals, it is stronglyrecommended that trial installations be evaluatedunder actual service conditions.2. This is especially true when considering the use ofViton diaphragms due to their replacement costbeing over six times that of neoprene. Viton shouldonly be considered for aggressive media at extremetemperatures if it shows an “A” rating and neoprene,Buna-N and Nordel show an unsatisfactory rating. For example, immersion testing in individual chemicalsat a specific operating temperature doesn’t predictthe performance of polypropylene or PVDF shouldan exothermic reaction take place when mixtures ofchemicals are involved. These guides for best diaphragm selection do not holdfor the valve ball material. Because the diaphragmsare securely gripped by their inner and outer beads, they can stand up to 20% swell without affecting pumpperformance. If the valve balls swell even a very smallThe ratings given on the following pages are a guideand do not constitute a warranty of any kind, expressedor implied, with respect to the performance of thematerials Wilden offers in any specific application.COPYRIGHT 2005 WILDEN PUMP & ENGINEERING CO., GRAND TERRACE, CANordel and Viton are registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers.Teflon is a registered trademark of DuPont.Saniflex and Wil-Flex are trademarks of Wilden Pump & Engineering, LLC.WILDEN PUMP & ENGINEERING, LLC2WIL-21000-C-04
