While 2020 was certainly a year unlike any other inour history, the values that underpin our mission-guided worktogether remained as important and relevant as ever.When EvergreenHealth became the first health system inthe country to diagnose and treat an influx of patients withcommunity-spread COVID-19, it left an indelible mark onour hearts, our lives and EvergreenHealth’s place in history.Throughout 2020, much of our focus centered on respondingto the unfolding pandemic, through the delivery of qualitycritical care, participation in research and clinical trials,providing community education and much more.At the same time, many of the tenets that ground us asa public hospital district continued to serve as importantreminders of our accountability as stewards of ourcommunity’s resources.MissionEvergreenHealth will advance the health of the community it serves throughdedication to high-quality, safe, compassionate and cost-effective health care.As you’ll read in this year’s annual report, 2020 was fullof important milestones and highlights. Typically, these programs are held in-person andoffer a chance for seniors within the community to connectwith one another.As one of the largest providers of hospice and home healthin the Pacific Northwest, EvergreenHealth Home Care caresfor thousands of patients and families across King andSnohomish Counties with compassionate end-of-life care.EvergreenHealth’s levy-funded Palliative Medicine (PM)program serves patients and families facing a serious illnesswith care and support from compassionate providers whounderstand the physical and emotional challenges of aconcerning diagnosis.Northshore Senior CenterSupporting Families with SpecializedGeriatric CareEvergreenHealth Geriatric CareEvergreenHealth Geriatric Care compassionately serves theEastside community’s patients who are 65 years and older,without requiring a referral. The team of board-certifiedspecialists includes geriatricians, nurses, social workersand pharmacists—all with special training and experienceassisting seniors.The Geriatric Care team assesses patients’ health, includingmedical conditions, cognitive status, functional abilityand mental health needs, to determine the most suitabletreatment for each person. This experienced team alsoworks hand-in-hand with each patient’sfamily and other physicians to create anindividualized care plan.Victoria Marxen, MD, EvergreenHealthGeriatric Care physicianHowever, to keep seniors safe during the COVID-19pandemic, all NSC educational and support programsquickly pivoted access to accommodate computer and/or phone connections with seniors. Some of these onlineprograms included seated body conditioning, balance andstrength, yoga, cooking and discussion classes. In addition,experienced NSC Adult Day Health staff provided weeklyhealth and wellness telephone check-ins to support seniors,their families and caregivers.Given the success of virtual programming, NSC anticipatesoffering a hybrid model of virtual and in-personprogramming moving forward.In 2020, and in light of the pandemic, EvergreenHealth’spartnership with Northshore Senior Center:“In 2020, our practice focused onincreasing access to geriatric careProgrammingwith the intent to serve patients over ainidviudalstransitionedservedto fully virtuallonger period of time and to allow more meaningful,long-term management of senior health issues. EvergreenHealth’s hospicecare program was among the first in the nation to care forpatients with COVID-19, and specifically those at end-of life.As home care leaders quicky identified patient and staff safetyneeds, one key strategy was to rapidly establish a telehealthprogram to continue providing access to care for home healthand hospice patients and their families, even in the mostchallenging of circumstances.“Hospice providers deliver such personalized andintimate care, but the shift to telemedicine allowedour team to continue to do what they do best,while also keeping families and our staff safe.”—Cheryl Medawattage, BSN, RN, executive directorof EvergreenHealth Hospice Care.EvergreenHealth’s freestanding Gene & Irene WocknerHospice Care Center (HCC) also continued serving familiesunder strict transmission-based precautions, which includedengineering an entire wing of the HCC to negative pressureairflow to care for hospice patients with COVID-19, ensuringgreater safety for families navigating their loved one’send of life.EvergreenHealth Palliative MedicineThe PM team’s approach is to offer a much-needed “reststop” along the journey of navigating a serious medicalcondition. It’s an opportunity for patients and their familiesto consult with a PM physician to assess whether symptomsand medical challenges are being managed as effectivelyas possible.During the summer of 2020, the PM team members,Dr. Hope Wechkin, Dr. Laura Johnson, Sara Puckey, LICSWand PM Coordinator Sam Clark, welcomed physicianDr. Diane Dozois to the PM team. Dr. Dozois brings morethan 20 years of clinical experience and a compassionateapproach to patient care. Additionally, Kelly Holiday, LMHC,GMHS, transitioned into the role of PM manager in the fallof 2020. Throughout2020, students and youth, particularly, faced the challengesof transitioning to remote learning, sudden social isolationand mounting amounts of stress tied to navigating a publichealth emergency.Advancing STEM EducationPartnering With Local SchoolsWith help from the community’s levy dollars,EvergreenHealth partners with local school districts toprovide middle school and high school students withinformation and education related to Science, Technology,Engineering and Math (STEM).For several years, EvergreenHealth’s levy-funded YouthMental Health programs, in partnership with King County,has provided Youth Mental Health First Aid training toresidents of King County. The training teachesparticipants how to recognize signs andsymptoms of mental health challenges andcrisis, what to say and how to talk with someone,and how to refer to professional resources forhelp. Training is funded by King County MIDD,a behavioral health sales tax.Despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Juanita HighSchool’s Global Health STEM program continued in a virtualsetting, which provided opportunities for EvergreenHealthleaders and physicians to present as guest speakers onimportant health care topics, and for students to remotelyattend the hospital’s Grand Rounds.One student at Juanita High School posed a particularlyinsightful question at the end of a Grand Rounds aboutParkinson’s disease care, which was presented by Dr. PinkyAgarwal, EvergreenHealth neurologist.In 2020, EvergreenHealth hosted a series of virtualYouth Mental Health First Aid trainings, which providededucators, coaches and other volunteers who work withstudents the tools to help adolescents experiencing amental health crisis or addiction challenge.Support for NorthshoreSchool District StudentsLevy dollars also made it possible forEvergreenHealth to provide funding forYouth Mental Health First Aidteaches participants toALGEE:ASSESS for risk of suicide or harmLISTEN non-judgmentallyGIVE reassurance and informationENCOURAGE appropriate and professional helpENCOURAGE self-help and other support services92020 EvergreenHealth Community Annual Report“Why does Carbidopa / LevodopaER or CR absorb better at night?Does it relate to circadian rhythmsor something similar?”EvergreenHealth Community AdvisorsOver the past year, EvergreenHealth’s Community Advisorscontinued to play a meaningful role in ensuring theEastside community received the factual informationnecessary during the pandemic, including clinical updatesand how to keep yourself and the community safe.The Community Advisors met remotely to learn about anddiscuss EvergreenHealth’s behavioral health programsthat support patients, staff, physicians and the communityat large, during a time where access to behavioral healthresources were more necessary than ever.The Community Advisors are volunteers who offer insightsand advice to the EvergreenHealth Board of Commissionersand Administration. All advisors are residents of theEvergreenHealth District, serve in three-year terms anddemonstrate their dedication to community involvement,strong interpersonal skills and health care delivery.Throughout the year, Community Advisors attendmultiple educational sessions to learn about health carechallenges currently facing the Eastside communityand EvergreenHealth programs and services that canaddress those issues. Additionally, some advisors serveon EvergreenHealth’s Medical Center task forces. Allcommunity advisors represent EvergreenHealth outside ofthe health system to better serve the community.Mental health therapistsfor high schoolsin the Northshore School District tosupport students on a referral basis fromhigh school guidance therapists. In 2020,the district’s mental health therapistsmet virtually with students individuallyand in small groups to address theirneeds, and introduced new supportiveresources for students grieving from lossof a loved one.Through STEM’s partnership with Juanita High School,students have the opportunity to immerse themselves inlearning about career paths in science, health care and manymore industries.EvergreenHealth Community Advisors (photo taken before the COVID-19pandemic)10
