Course OverviewAssessment of NeedThis course focuses on advancements inorthognathic and craniofacial surgery, orthodontics,surgically-facilitated orthodontics, compleximplant treatment, and multispecialty interaction.Topics will include: advances in virtual surgicaltreatment planning of complex cases includingasymmetries and in patients with transverse archdiscrepancies; use of scanning technology toreplace traditional use of dental models; surgicallyfacilitated orthodontic treatment; interdisciplinarymanagement of patients requiring surgicaltreatment and the orthodontist’s perspectiveof the current challenges with orthognathicsurgery; and treatment of complex implant cases,and management of patients with combinedorthognathic and TMJ abnormalities. Fireside chatswill provide opportunities for sharing difficult caseswith the experts as well as discussing challengesimpacting the specialties. The course formatencourages interaction between attendees andfaculty in an informal environment.Practitioners need new information andmanagement strategies in the field of orthodonticsand orthognathic surgery, reconstructive surgery,and implantology. Topics in research and choices intreatment are essential, as well as are opportunitiesfor collegial discussion and consideration ofapplication to one’s clinical setting.Target AudienceThis course is designed for oral and maxillofacialsurgeons, orthodontists, dentists, physicians,and health care auxiliaries interested in theadvancements in the field and in sharingexperiences in a highly interactive setting.Professional Practice GapsRapidly advancing technologies including virtualsurgical planning for orthognathic and implantsurgery, improving scanning and computertechnology, and advanced surgical techniques havecreated a knowledge gap for practicing oral andmaxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, general dentists,and other dental specialists. This course will providean evidenced-based educational program to presentmethods for implementing the latest technologicadvances in treatment planning and orthodontic andsurgical treatment. This course will provide a widevariety of treatment options for patients undergoingorthognathic, TMJ, reconstructive, and implant surgery.Methodology-FormatThe purpose of this course is to engage attendeesin thoughtful discussion and debate of the issuesso they can implement appropriate improvementsto patient care. Each session is structured to inviteinformal discussion of the issues surrounding thetopic being presented.
