SINAMICS G150 – ideal for pumps, fans, extruders and mixer drivessquare-wave clocking technique –reaches up to 105 % of the line supplyvoltage but at the same time there is anextremely high harmonic content in themotor current. This results in significantharmonic losses in the motor and asignificantly poorer utilization whencompared to direct on-line operation. OurSINAMICS G150 drive converter operateswith a technique that is unique in themarketplace – that combines the advantages of both techniques. The so-callededge modulation with optimized pulsepattern. Even under load it reaches 100 %of the line supply voltage without anynegative effects such as an extremelyhigh harmonic content and supplementary losses in the motor. The drive converter losses are also lower. Only Siemensdrive converters – such as the SINAMICSG150 – have edge modulation.SINAMICS G150Quieter, more compact, more user-friendlySINAMICS G150 is the Siemens drivesolution for applications that do notrequire regenerative feedback into theline supply. These are predominantlyapplications with square-law load torquecharacteristics – i.e. pumps, fans andcompressors, but also constant-torqueapplications such as extruders, mixersand crushers. A new concept makes thesedrive converter cabinets unique.A modular packaging design, extremelylow-loss IGBT power semiconductors andan innovative cooling solution makeSINAMICS G150 the quietest and mostcompact drive converter in a standardcabinet. The plug and play cabinet unitsare extremely easy to handle and theirmodular design simplifies service.Low costs –from planning up to serviceOur SINAMICS G150 drive convertershave been completely redeveloped anddistinguish themselves in every phase ofthe product life cycle with low costs andsimplicity – from planning and procurement through installation and commissioning up to daily operation and service.SINAMICS G150 units offer an excellentprice-performance ratio and can be completely integrated into any automationsolution.100 % line supply voltage at the motor– without any harmonicsUp until now, there were two alternativesfor voltage-source DC link converters togenerate a variable output voltage. Bothof these alternatives have specific disadvantages: Although the so-called spacevector technique minimizes the harmoniccomponent in the motor current andtherefore supplementary losses in themotor, with this technique, only a maximum of 90 % of the line supply voltageis available at the motor. This means thatthe rated operating point of the drivenload may not be able to be reached –especially for square-law load characteristics. The alternative technique – the Favorably priced: Across the board –from planning through to service Compact: up to 70 % smaller footprints Quiet: noise, typically 69 dB (A) Energy-saving: up to 50 % less energyrequirement for the drive system Precise: to flexibly adapt to the process Uncomplicated: simple operatorcontrol across the board Unique: 100 % line supply voltage atthe motor without any secondaryeffects Modular: also as SINAMICS G130chassis unitPower and voltage rangesSINAMICS G150380–480 V110–900 kW500–600 V110–1,000 kW660–690 V75–1,500 kW3

SINAMICS G150 reduces the costs –even before production startsSINAMICS G150Version A, IP54Quick and easy:Plant integrationFlexible range of options:Transparent and cost-reducingFor instance – plant construction companies can quickly andreliably select the optimum SINAMICS G150 version forworldwide use from the easy-to-use catalog. The standardized versions for all relevant voltage ranges and line frequencies are available within the shortest time. The drive can beprecisely dimensioned thanks to the range of outputs thatare orientated to the user and the motor. Possibilities ofconnecting the drive to grounded and non-grounded linesupplies (TN and IT line supplies) are already integrated. Not only this, SINAMICS G150 drives can be easily integratedinto your automation environment through various analogand digital interfaces. The ready-to-connect drive converter cabinet units can beprecisely adapted to customer-specific requirements thanks to awide range of components and options. A transparent structuremakes it simple to select the appropriate options. The drive unitcan be flexibly adapted to a specific application, which meansthat it does not have functions that are not actually required.4

SINAMICS G150Version C, IP20Easy planning and installation:Low space requirementThe small SINAMICS G150 footprint isimpressive: When compared to otherdrive units for the same application, it isup to 50 % smaller. For Version C, wherethe line supply connection componentsare installed in a central low-voltageswitchboard, the footprint can evenbe reduced by up to 70 %! The cabinetwidths decrease in a 200 mm gridpattern. This has all been made possibleby the use of low-loss components, for example by using flat copper busbarsinstead of cables for the power connections. The amount of cabling is also reducedthanks to the modular design and bysensibly combining functions. The degree of protection can be subsequently increased up to IP54 thanks tofilter elements that have been specificallydesigned for this purpose – and thatwithout changing the mounting footprint.Well conceived:Easy installationOur SINAMICS G150 drive converter issupplied in a standard cabinet with200 mm grid dimensions. In spite of thecompact envelope dimension, the internal space for routing cables is generousso that even thick cables can be easilyconnected. Furthermore, cables caneither be introduced from the top or thebottom (the cable entry is prepared in thefactory) without increasing the mountingfootprint.5

Simply faster from the word go!SINAMICS G150 is as straightforwardas it getsCommissioning:Finished quickly – without a manualA SINAMICS G150 is commissioned directly at the AOP30 user-friendly operatorpanel or the STARTER software. Commissioning is extremely simple and can bequickly learned. Only a few parametershave to be set during the menu-promptedcommissioning at the cabinet. The timerequired for installation and handling isreduced to approx. 1/10 as it is no longernecessary to study manuals – a timeconsuming affair.Simple to learn:The operator controlDrive units that are easy to handle helpavoid operator errors. This in turn also increases their availability. This is wherethe user-friendly operator panel shows itsstrengths: A graphics-capable LC displayin conjunction with a menu-based systemin plain text. Context-sensitive functionkeys reduce the overall number of keysand simplify operator prompting and6navigation. Important process values canbe seen at a glance using the bar-typedisplays. Extensive help and diagnosticfunctions provide detailed informationabout actual faults, including their causesand possible measures to resolve them.In operation the quietest driveconverterSINAMICS G150 is quietness itself. Thereason for this is that the latest CAD techniques for thermal simulation were usedduring the development. This simulationallowed an optimum cooling air flow tobe achieved. However, a lower coolingdemand was achieved by consequentiallyusing state-of-the-art, low-loss components. The tangential fans, located in thelower section of the cabinet, are extremely quiet and the cooling air is blownupwards through the drive converter sothat all of the power elements have thesame air intake temperature. This meansthat in comparison to conventional cabinet units, the noise level is up to 18 dB (A)lower.Modular design for the highest degreeof service-friendlinessFunction blocks and modules have beencombined which means that SINAMICSG150 drive converters not only have anextremely compact design, but are alsoextremely service-friendly. When designing the drive units, good accessibility andthe ability to quickly replace all of thevarious modules had topmost priority inthe requirement specifications. Individualmodules such as the fan assembly, control electronics, customer interfacesand power components, can be easilyreplaced when service is required. Thisguarantees a high degree of availability.Typically, only 15 screws have to bereleased in order to replace the “Powerblock” power module.

One system for all drives –seamlessly integrated engineeringSIZER toolSTARTER toolFavorably priced with system-basedflexibilityMinimizes the costs:SIZER engineering toolSpeeds up commissioning:STARTER toolThe completely newly designedSINAMICS family of drives can addressnew cost-saving potential thanks to itsunique, seamless, integrated philosophyand operator navigation! This meanseasy entry into the drive system andonce know-how has been built up, thiscan be directly transferred – e.g. usingthe higher-level tools for engineering, configuring and commissioning. The two tools – SIZER and STARTER –run as dedicated Windows applications. The experience gained when usingthese tools can be used when engineering any other SINAMICS drive. This engineering tool makes it possibleto engineer a drive system as quickly andreliably as never before. This is because itincludes all of the SINAMICS componentsthat can be used when designing a drivesystem and, thanks to the graphic interface, can be intuitively handled. Oncelearned, every SINAMICS drive systemcan be quickly engineered using SIZER.SIZER stands for reducing the manufacturing costs of the plant through accelerated engineering.Faster to the final goal with STARTER –and that without any specific systemknow-how. STARTER allows drivecomponents to be simply configured andcommissioned – graphically and menuprompted. Data can be imported from theelectronic rating plates of the drive components, which makes parameterizingsimpler and faster for users – and alsoavoids incorrect entries.7

With variable speed –SINAMICS G150 saves energyEnergy consumption100%90%80%Mechanical flow control70%60%50%Energy savings40%30%Untypicaloperatingrange20%Flow control withfrequency w rateSave energy instead of wasting it:Variable-speed operationSavings in the double-digitpercentage rangeOften, pumps, fans and compressors arecontrolled using traditional control techniques. This has a decisive disadvantageas the motor permanently runs at the rated speed with the maximum flow rate –although in practice, this is only infrequently required. This results in frequentpartial load operation with high-energylosses, e.g. when throttles are used forthe closed-loop control. Variable-speedfrequency converter operation makes thisexpensive energy wastage a thing of thepast.Variable-speed drive systems utilizingdrive converters precisely adapt theenergy they draw to the actual requirements. The motor only draws the powerthat is precisely required at that particular operating point. This means that thepower factor and efficiency remainalmost constant – resulting in energysavings of up to 50 %.Less stress on the plant and thebalance sheetDrive converters avoid current peaks, torque surges as well as unfavorableoperating conditions and with softstarting and stopping ensure low stressing on the complete mechanical transmission line. Mechanical closed-loopcontrol is not required. The result –improved performance, lower serviceand maintenance costs and a longer8service lifetime. This reduces the stressing on your plant and makes your commercial manager happy.Ideal for applications withoutregenerative feedback into the linesupplySINAMICS G150 converters with theirrugged, sensorless, closed-loop vectorcontrol are especially tailored for driveapplications that do not require regenerative feedback into the line supply. Manyof these applications include pumps, fansand compressors, i.e. applications withthe largest energy-saving potential.

Investments that pay off –SinaSave calculates the payback timeCorrect calculation using specific dataOur SinaSave software tool shows youhow quickly an investment made in aSINAMICS G150 frequency converterpays off. The program calculates theenergy saving based on the specific plantcharacteristics and data. The paybacktime is derived from the total monthlysaving and the costs of the frequencyconverter. Often, this payback time isonly just a few months.A handle on all factorsThe SinaSave energy-saving programtakes into account all of the parametersrequired for the calculation: Flow rate and delivery head for pumps Mass flow and total pressure differencefor fans Density of the pumped medium Efficiency of the fan or pump, electricalefficiency and overall efficiency of theplant Number of working days and workingshifts Operating profile over a day and a yearThe optimum technologyat the right priceTo start, SinaSave generates the idealdrive system from the basic plant-specificdata that was entered. This ideal drivesystem has the appropriate power ratingand a price is generated for a suitablefrequency converter. The program thendetermines the energy required by thevariable-speed drive system for the specific application. It then compares thiswith the values also calculated for thealternative concepts that could be considered (for example, various throttle valves, bypass systems or pole changing motors). The energy saving in Kilowatt hours is obtained from the difference. Based on theactual cost of energy, SinaSave outputsthis value as a specific saving. The costsfor planning, engineering, integrationand commissioning must then be addedto the price of the frequency converter itself. SinaSave then calculates the individual payback time taking into account theenergy saving and additional cost-reducing effects of variable-speed operation(e.g. improved power factor and operation with low stressing on the overallplant or system).More on the subject of energy savingwith SinaSave under:www.siemens.com/energysaving9
