PRIDE AND JOY: DEPAUL SCHOOLSCOLLABORATE TO MAKE ‘OH BABY!’ FILM94 Students, Professionals Contribute from School of Cinematic Arts,The Theatre School and School of MusicBy Kristin Claes MathewsWhen filmmaker Meghann Artes set out to makeher latest film, she envisioned complex stop-motionanimation, a dance number with a rainbow of colorfulcostumes, and a whimsical, heart-tugging score. She didn’tneed to look far to find the talent to bring her visionto life. Over the course of two years, some 94 DePaulstudents, alumni, faculty, and staff contributed to herlatest Project Bluelight short film, Oh Baby! The result is a first-of-its kind collaboration amongDePaul’s School of Cinematic Arts—where Artesteaches—and The Theatre School and School of Music.“We’re used to doing curricular collaboration,” says DavidMiller, dean of the College of Computing and DigitalMedia. “This degree of creative collaboration across allthree schools I think is groundbreaking.”Weaving Together ‘Smaller Parts’Along the way, Artes’ husband and producer, Joe Lyons, captured the making of the film for a newly releaseddocumentary that interviews the professionals andstudents who worked on set and behind the scenes, including filmmakers, animators, actors, costumedesigners, and musicians from across campus. The film wassupported by Project Bluelight, the DePaul productioncompany that pairs faculty filmmakers with students tooffer real-world experience in making professional films.Having the documentary as a record has been a treatfor Artes. “When making a film this ambitious, one ofthe only ways to get through it is to break it down intosmaller parts,” she says. “Watching the doc really has givenme a sense of the size and scope of the project and howmany amazing and talented people had to come togetherto actually get this project made.”For Lyons, associate director of DePaul Cinespace, it wasalso a chance to show Artes’ creative process. “During thefestival runs on Meghann’s past two films, Speed Datingand Sleepy Steve, people would always ask how we madethem and what exactly we did to create certain scenesand effects. This doc answers all of those questions,”Lyons says.

Magic, Science, and FilmThe inspiration for the film was very personal, as Artesreflected on her and Lyons’ journey to parenthood. “Irealized this kind of magical experience was luck andscience all rolled into one,” Artes says. The documentaryshows Artes working with colleagues in the same way shemust approach parenting her three kids—with energy, patience, and joy.As a first step, associate professor Rob Steel in the Schoolof Cinematic Arts wrote the score, then School of Musicfaculty member Tom Matta worked on the arrangements. In the documentary, Artes listens as Matta conductsmusic students in playing different versions of the scorewhile director of sound recording technology Tom Millerrecords it.Next viewers see Artes dancing along with actors fromThe Theatre School, including choreographer KristinaFluty. Head of Costume Technology Deanna Aliosius alsobrought her expertise to design the look of a live-actiondance scene, which was modeled after 1930s dancenumbers by filmmaker Busby Berkeley.Associate professor Brian Andrews, who teaches in theSchool of Cinematic Arts, explains how his team helpedmake the transition from live-action to animation lookseamless. “When visual effects are done right, quite oftenwe disappear. We do all this work in order that you can’tever see our footsteps,” he says.WATCH MORETo learn more about Project Bluelight, visit http://bit.ly/bluelightDPU.Real-World Experience On The Setand Behind The ScenesGiving students a chance to see how their talents canbe applied in a different venue—and maybe even adifferent career path—is a benefit of this collaboration, explains John Culbert, dean of The Theatre School.“The geographic distance between the schools isgreater than the actual distance between thesedisciplines,” Culbert says.DePaul alumna and filmmaker Ella Lubienski said it wasexciting to see the schools coming together. “I hopeit fosters new connections, for students and faculty ingeneral,” she says.Oh Baby! currently is making the film festival circuit andrecently won Best Experimental Film at the USA FilmFestival. Many fests do not accept films that have beenposted or screened elsewhere, so Artes plans to debutthe short film to wider audiences this fall.Filmmaker Meghan Artes watches actors from The Theater Schoolperform choreography by Kristina Fluty of The Theatre Schoolduring the making of Oh Baby!
