They are“theological” because they have the One and Triune God for their origin, motive, and object(CCC, 1812). They are infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable ofacting as his children and of meriting eternal life (CCC, 1813).The third and greatest of the Divine virtues is called charity (love). According to the CatholicEncyclopedia (newadvent.org), it inclines the human will to cherish God for his own sake aboveall things, and man for the sake of God. We know that it is divinely infused since it is “poured outinto our hearts, by the Holy Spirit” (Rom. 5:5).The modern world associates love with emotion—classically equated to the passions—but theChurch teaches that love is seated in the human will. This is to say that love is not so much afeeling but is the choice to please God above all things and to do God’s will when it comes toserving our brothers and sisters on earth. Love of God and love of neighbor are manifested inconcrete acts, such as the corporal works of mercy (see Matt. 25:31-46). This love is total, forJesus “loved his own to the end” (Jn. 13:1) and then called his disciples to love one another as heloved them (Jn. 15:9, 12). It is so total that he even calls us to love our enemies and to pray forthose who persecute us (Mt. 5:44).This may seem impossible to us, but we should not place ourselves in easily in the “lovers ofGod” category until we first contemplate what St. Paul teaches us. Namely, that because of oursin and rebellion against God, we should see ourselves as enemies of God (Rom. 5:10). “But Godproved his love for us that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom.5:8). Recognizingthis truth, we can more readily love others. Finally, the virtues are not completely equal. There are ways in which “faith” can be corruptedas Jesus alludes: “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in yourname? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers’” (Mat.7:22-23). We must be careful and prayerful to stay close to God. As we learn from Jesus, prayermoves us to do God’s will “on earth as it is [done] in heaven” (Mat. 6:10).Faith and hope are matters of this world; they will not be needed in the next. So, they are not asperfect as love. Paul reminds us that we might speak in tongues, have the gift of prophecy, comprehend all mysteries and knowledge, and even have faith enough to move mountains, butif we do not have love, we are nothing since love is the greatest of these (see, 1 Cor. 13:1-13).Therefore “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God” (1 Jn. 4:7).Act of LoveO my God, I love Thee above all things with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all good and worthyof all love. I love my neighbor as myself for love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and I ask pardonfor all whom I have injured.Church of the Resurrection63 Mason Rd., Fairport, NY(585) 223-5500www.resurrectionfairport.orgChurch of the Assumption20 East Ave., Fairport, NY(585) 388-0040www.cota.church

Once areligious object is blessed and dedicated for divine worship orveneration, it must be treated with reverence and must not beused in either an improper or profane way (cf. Code of CanonLaw, #1171).What happens when the rosary or statue breaks and isirreparable? Or, when the palm dries out, and the followingPalm Sunday provides us with new palm? The basic rule forthe disposition of these items is to burn or to bury them. Therefore, anything that has been blessed should be burned(and then the ashes buried) or simply buried and ought not tobe thrown into the garbage.“At Easter, God finally reveals His glory: He takesaway the last veil and astonishes us as neverbefore. We discover, in fact, that God’s glory is alllove: pure love, mad and unthinkable, beyondevery limit and measure True glory is the glory oflove, because it is the only one that gives life to theworld. Certainly this glory is the opposite of worldlyglory, which comes when one is admired, praised, acclaimed. The glory of God, on the other hand, isparadoxical: no applause, no audience.” Pope Francis, Angelus, April 2019
