Already recognised globally as the‘World Primate Centre’, and as one of the onlyZoos in the world to house all 4 great apes, thefoundations have been laid. HOW WE BEGANNOW A MODERN ZOO LEADING THE WAYFounded in 1963 by Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans. Once famous for training chimpanzeesfor chimps tea parties and TV adverts the ladies later became regarded as world experts in primatecare and breeding as a charity since 1972. Working to develop the UK’s first and onlyNATIONAL SCIENCE ANDCONSERVATION CENTREWhat is The National Scienceand Conservation Centre?This purpose built centre will offer researchers, fromaround the world, the opportunity to study the 4Great Apes, plus over 100 endangered species, innaturalistic complex environments.The centre will provide excellent teaching andresearch facilities (FE and HE), focussing on:conservation; animal welfare; biosciences; STEMactivities and public engagement with science. Thecentre will have both national and internationalappeal and will include a unique 200-seater venuefor scientific conferences, with accommodation forresearchers and conference attendees.Where is it?The National Science and Conservation Centrewill be adjacent to Twycross Zoo, which is ideallylocated in the centre of the UK easily accessibleby great transport links from across the country.The impressive 10m, 3,365sqm National Scienceand Conservation Centre will fully integrate intoworld-class habitats for all 4 Great Apes (Gorilla,Chimpanzee, Orang Utan, Bonobo).Why now?Action is what is needed now, and this facilitywill support conservationists and scientists with aworld class facility when they need it the most tobe able to impact our global crisis. NATIONAL SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION CENTREWith your help we could be ready to break ground by 2020Lecture TheatreThis 190sqm multi-use space is principally a 200 seat lecturetheatre, but can be converted into two further teaching rooms oreven a single large exhibition/conference space by collapsing thetiered seating. The space is connected to the adjacent Orang Utanenclosure to provide a unique study facility.ClassroomsThere are numerous 70m² general purpose classrooms featuringpresentation/media facilities along with a computer laboratory,breakout spaces for meetings, and a cafeteria.LaboratoriesAt the heart of facility is a bio sciences laboratory ensuringimportant research and conservation work can take place dayto day and around this there will also be office provision for 20researchers.AccommodationThe centre will provide 30 bedrooms to ensure researchers andvisiting professionals can stay if needed to complete longerfunctions and research projects.Oumbi, Western Lowland Gorilla
