Car SharingCar SharingCar-sharing is an alternative for those who still drive but prefer notto own a car. There is generally a yearly or monthly fee that is paidto the car-sharing service and then an hourly rate to “share” the caritself. However, you do not need to pay for car insurance, gas, andmaintenance when you use a car share vehicle. Pickup locationsvary but can often be found centered around a publictransportation hot spot or shopping area. There are many car pickup locations in Brookline and a few in Newton.Kathryn’s Tips for Using Car SharingKathryn likes to keep active and getsaround without a car on a day-to-day basis.Once a month on the weekends, she rents acar from Enterprise. They come pick her upat her house and take her to the Enterprise rental facility to pickup the car. She runs any errands requiring longer distance traveland visits friends who are farther afield. Otherwise, she getsaround town by walking or taking public transportation.41

Car SharingWho can use thisoption?Anyone with a valid driver’s license and amajor credit card can use the car-sharingservice.How much doesit cost?Monthly costs vary depending on theservice, and different types of cars havedifferent hourly rates (i.e., a compact carwill cost less to rent on an hourly basisthan an SUV). In addition, there aredifferent rates for different days/times.Generally it is more expensive to rent onthe weekends during prime times than onthe weekdays during those same time
