June 12, 2022Letter from the Pastor, Fr. JoeAs your pastor, and because of the news in the press this past week, I feel it is imperative to clarify, for the sake of all Catholics in our 2 parishes, the issue of abortion.Abortion is, objectively speaking, a mortal sin. Pope Francis, on at least 2 occasionsthat I am aware of, has publicly stated that abortion is murder. Murder is a mortal sin.Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, as well as past popes haveall taught that abortion is a grave sin. The teaching of the Church is clear, and, is expressed in the current Catechism of the Catholic Church as well.Receiving communion, without repentance and confession, for those who publiclypromote abortion or the expansion of abortion, aids in abortion, or procures an abortion, and receives communion, adds another mortal sin of sacrilege. A person whodies in the state of mortal sin is bound for hell.In order for a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be met:the sin must be grave matterthe person committing the sin must be aware the sin is grave matterthe person committing the sin must give full consent to it, and freely choose it.All 3 conditions must be present for it to be a mortal sin, not just one or two ofthem. For example, if a young teenager has a forced abortion out of pressure from others, itmight not be a mortal sin. She would not meet the third condition, and maybe eventhe second. It is a serious issue though, and she should bring it to confession. All sins can be forgiven if one is repentant. Priests are available to help people workthrough this issue and any other sins they bring to a confessor. God is rich in Mercyand is not seeking to condemn anyone. He is joyful when one comes to Him seekingreconciliation!I am stating this so you are aware of the Holy Spirit’s voice in the teachings of theChurch, and make informed and morally correct decisions, for the sake of your salvation.Sincerely as your pastor,Rev. Joseph G. Hlubik,Missionary of Mercy of Pope FrancisPastor of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Bay Head, NJPastor of St. Pio of Pietrelcina Church, Lavallette, NL
