SAINT JEROME CHURCHDear Parishioners,In today’s Gospel, Jesus prays to the Father thatthe world may believe that you sent me. In fact, Chapter17 of John’s Gospel in its entirety is Jesus’ prayer to theFather. The first part is a prayer for Jesus himself. Thesecond part is a prayer for Jesus’ disciples. The third part, the passage we heard today, is a prayer for futurebelievers, for those who will believe in me through theirword. It is not, however, just a prayer that futurefollowers might believe, but that they also be one – thatfollowers be in union with each other. Jesus prays, thatthey may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I inyou, that they also may be in us, that the world maybelieve that you sent me. It is precisely through the unityof believers that the world will come to know that theFather sent the Son to accomplish his saving action out oflove for those whom he created. How do we become one with Jesus, one with theFather? We begin by allowing Jesus into our hearts andminds, and listening to his word in prayer. Jesus said ourheavenly Father will always hear our prayer. Finally, letus strive to begin the difficult work of forgiving others, even those who have hurt us deeply. The Church’s prayertoday is that of the Lord, that we might all be one.Let us all pray for God's healing blessings for allwho are suffering from the COVID-19 infection aroundthe world! Here is the prayer that Pope Francis composedfor this pandemic:O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation andof hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping yourfaith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People, knowwhat we need, and we are sure you will provide so that,as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and tofeasting after this time of trial.Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the willof the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who hastaken upon himself our sufferings and carried oursorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of theresurrection.
