While wealth, power andcelebrity are the sought-after prizes of our world, thetreasures of God’s reign are love, humble selflessness, compassion and generosity. In freeing ourselves fromthe pursuit of the things of this world, we liberateourselves to seek the lasting things of God.SANCTUARY LAMPThe lamps beside the tabernacles in ourchurches remind us of the Real Presence ofJesus in the Holy Eucharist. The poor, the hungry, thebereaved, and the ostracized are “blessed?” Whatabout hard work, self-sufficiency, and achievement?Jesus turns things upside down and says, think again. Is physical hunger worse than gnawing spiritualhunger? Should we mourn death if we cannot mournour own wasted opportunities and sinfulness? We may slide away from God if we focus on oursuccess and happiness. To follow Jesus requires adaily commitment to the hard work of our ownconversion, aligning our hearts with gospel values.Only then will we find God, the true source ofoverflowing life and happiness, and know that thejoys of heaven will more than compensate for anylosses, troubles, and hardships that we may encounteron the way.Copyright 2009, World Library Publications. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 13, 2022INCLEMENT WEATHERIt’s that time of year when I offer a protocol aboutgoing to Mass and other church events when yourhealth or safety is in danger because of snow and/orice.For the weekday Mass (Monday-Thursday), I’d liketo follow the procedure that other churches are using:if the Town of East Hartford cancels school (or delaysit) because of bad weather, then the weekday Masswill not be celebrated.Since I live only a few yards from Saint ChristopherChurch, I should be able to reach that church whenthe weather is bad to celebrate our weekend Masses(the Saturday Vigil or Sunday morning Masses).Someone has kindly offered to give me a ride to theOur Lady of Peace Church in a weather-friendlyvehicle when driving there myself would prove ahardship on Sundays.Page 4Saint Christopher Church HallFriday March 11, 20221:30 PM- 6:30 PMTo make an appointment, call1-800-Red Cross or driveREADINGS FOR THE WEEKDaily readings can be easily accessed on theUnited States Conference of Catholic Bishops’website by going here: http://usccb.org/bible/readings/. If during the week, either on-line oron-air, you see that East Hartford public schools areeither closed or delayed, that’s your notice that dailyMass is cancelled for that day.James 1:1-11;Psalm 119:67-68, 71-72, 75-76; Mark 8:11-13The bottom line is to use common sense. God doesn’twant you to risk your health or safety because of theweather. Of course, this means that if you don’t go tochurch because of the weather, then you wouldn’t goanywhere else in the same weather.James 1:19-27; Psalm 15:2-4ab, 5; Mark 8:22-26Tuesday - February 15:James 1:12-18;Psalm 94:12-13a; 14-15, 18-19; Mark 8:14-21Wednesday - February 16:Thursday - February 17:James 2:1-9; Psalm 34:2-7; Mark 8:27-33Friday - February 18:When in doubt, don’t go out.
