The Pastor’s Two CentsFor the second Sunday of Advent I share withyou additional wisdom from Fr. Ron Rolheiser. In a version of Jane Austin’s Sense and Sensibility, ayoung woman has to carry a very painful tension. for aAdventlong time. She carries the tension for. years, and thenATimeto Preparefinally when it is resolved there is true sublimity. Why?Because something can only be sublime if first there hasbeen some sublimation (and for more than two hours!)In essence, this expresses the meaning of Advent: for something to be sublime theremust first be sublimation; fasting is the necessary prelude to feasting; greatness of soulis contingent on first nobly carrying tension; great joy is not experienced if one is notfirst properly prepared; and what's truly divine can only appear after a certain kind ofgestation. Advent is about proper waiting (and preparing). It should therefore not be confused with Lent. The crimson-purple of Advent isnot the black-purple of Lent. The former symbolizes yearning and longing, the latterrepentance. The spirituality of Advent is not about repentance, but about carryingtension without prematurely resolving it so that what's born in us and in our world doesnot short-circuit the fullness that comes from respecting love's rhythms. What is the connection here? How does carrying tension help lead to the sublime? It does it by helping to produce the heat required for generativity. An image might behelpful here. John of the Cross, in his book, The Living Flame of Love, compares our preadvent selves to green logs that have been thrown into a fire, the fire of love. Green logs,as we know, do not immediately burst into flame. Rather, being young and full ofmoisture, they sizzle for a long time before they reach kindling temperature and cantake into themselves the fire that is around them so as to participate in it. So too therhythm of love: only the really mature can truly burst into flame within community. Therest of us are still too self-contained, too green, too selfish, too damp. We don’t burst intoflame when love surrounds us. Rather our dampness helps extinguish the communalflame. What helps change this is precisely the tension in our lives. In carrying properlyour unfulfilled desires we sizzle and slowly let go of the dampness of selfishness. Incarrying tension we come to kindling temperature and are made ready for love. PierreTeilhard de Chardin, as a scientist, noticed that sometimes when you put two chemicalsinto a test-tube they do not automatically unite. They only merge at a highertemperature. They must first be heated to bring about unity. There’s an entire anthropology and psychology of love in that image. In order tolove we must first be brought to a higher psychic temperature. What brings us there?Sizzling in tension, not resolving things prematurely, not sleeping with the bride beforethe wedding, not trying to have the complete symphony within two hours. The sublimehas to be waited for. Only when there is first enough heat will there be unity. To givebirth to what's divine requires the slow patience of gestation. In shorthand, that's thealgebra of Advent.“Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.”What are you doing to prepare the way of the Lord this Advent season?Don’t forget, “The Lord is with you!”Fr. Stan

Sunday Gospel ReflectionSecond Sunday of AdventDecember 4th-5thLuke 3:1-6Gospel SummaryIn today’s Gospel, Luke places the beginning of John theBaptist’s ministry within a historical context. He sets John’sministry in time by telling us who were the rulers and leadersin the region. We recognize many of the names—PontiusPilate, Herod, Annas, and Caiaphas. Into this time comesJohn, proclaiming a baptism of repentance and preparing theway of the Lord.Reflection for ParentsValleys, mountains, winding roads, and rough ways are all apart of the journey of life. As parents, our task is to teach ourchildren how to apply faith in God and Christian values tohelp straighten out or make right what is wrong, and to helpmake smooth what is difficult or rough. Seeking forgivenessfrom one another and from God is one of the greatest wayswe can do so. Take a few moments to ask God to place withinyou a forgiving heart so that you may teach your children towalk in the ways of forgiveness and love.Bringing the Good News Into Your FamilyAs a family, recall the bumpiest, hilliest, most snow-covered,pothole-full, curviest, narrowest, and scariest roads you haveever driven on. Talk about things that create the bumps, hills, potholes, curves, and dangers on the road to Heaven. Forexample, anger creates a bump on the road to Heaven andlittle white lies create curves in the straight path to God. Thenbrainstorm things you can do this Advent to smooth andstraighten the road to God, including forgiving one anotherand following God’s Word.FAITH ON TAPGood Company, Interesting Topics and LivelyConversation for Catholic Adults.
